Nurse is better last year and this year.
In what ways?

Morrissey is better defensively. (Fancy stats back that up)

He is also better offensively and has been his entire career. Nurse had more points last year but that's based on Morrissey only playing less games.

Edit: Yes I have been a Nurse hater in the past but I've liked his game alot more this year then I did. But that said Nurse shouldn't come close to Morrissey contract wise and if he did that would be a massive failure

McKenzie says the Oilers can't do a long-term deal with Nurse because they have cap problems coming in the next two years. What? o_O The cap situation improves next summer and then again in 2021.

Unless he thinks that Nurses ask is astronomical and that Nurse isn't in their long term plans

12 players to sign with like 24 million in cap. Not that great this summer.

kassian and nurse will be close to 10 of that.

During Nurse’s last contract negotiation the Oilers had the cap space to sign him for $5-5.5M, but I remember a quote coming from his agent that the team didn’t have the money then either. I’m guessing his camp is going to be looking for Trouba money.

Then you trade his ass. I like Nurse but if he wants north of 6 mill he is out to lunch. He doesn't play as a top pairing guy and shouldn't get top pairing money

It's a better situation than this past summer. Some of the Condors are going to be pushing for spots, and Russell's contract will be easier to move after July 1.

And that leaves 14+ mill for Bear, 4 bottom 6 guys and a backup goalie. So even if that used 9 of that, it gives us 4+ whatever the cap goes up by to add another top 6 forward

I think they are in a good spot, certainly better than this past summer. Some of the Condors are going to be pushing for spots and Russell's contract will be easy to move after July 1.
Outside of Lagesson and maybe Benson, sadly none of the Condors seem to be pushing for a spot.

Although I could see them moving Russell, replacing him with Lagesson or Jones. Would free up around 3 mill in space. Still wouldn't have a #1 defender but I don't think they are looking for one.

You keep misunderstanding - intentionally or otherwise, I’m not sure. I didn’t say we should sign FAs. I said I’d have time for trades for the middle six. I also didn’t say that the picks would help right now. I’m of the opinion that I’d like for this team to be competitive for a decade+, not just the next few years. And I also disagree with your opinion that Mcdrai are peaking, since you think we need to go all in now and mortgage our future. They have at least 5-6 years of likely continued dominance in the league, followed by several more years of elite play even if not top of the league anymore, a la Crosby, Ovechkin, Kane, etc etc. You are way too concerned about this extremely small window you’ve manufactured for this team’s success. How long did it take Washington to win a cup? Certainly wasn’t in the same window you’re giving our players.

Washington were contenders though for most of Ovechkin's tenure. Sure they choked in the playoffs a lot, but at least they MADE the playoffs, and they did that convincingly.

You say that McDrai has 5+ more years, true, but any year that you don't make the playoffs with them is a year down the drain. 5 years seems like a lot right now, but like you said with Washington, it's not easy to win the Cup. Right now, we don't even have a chance at it. So yeah, I'm f***ing pissed Holland let such a great opportunity by. We could've beat the 'yotes offer without breaking the bank.

You're not keeping all those players though. IMO you look to move Russell or Larsson + Chiasson, that frees up a chunk of cap.

Maybe crazy but id offer Kassian a long term deal at a reduced AAV. I think his game will age nicely.
Nah you trade Kassian at a point where he’s a 20% shooter (first time ever) and when a lot of his success is attributed to McD. If you can flip him for an underperforming (but historically better) similar aged winger then go for it

Yeh, and find ourselves a new 6M+ top 6 winger..

Kassian ain't no Khaira.. he will get paid
Kassian will get paid 3-4 mill. He is clicking with McDavid, the team loves him, he is a physical presence. I think he will take a team friendly deal as he loves it here and we helped him get his life back on track so I see it on the lower end of the 3 mill range.

Yup, 3yrs 10M total seems to be the par term and par AAV.
+/- 1 yr and +/- 500K

2nd line winger that can score with RNH takes priority over Kassian. That has to happen first.

Yeh, and screw up the only line that is working. It would 10x worse than walking away from the big rig.
Kassian is fitting perfectly in our top 6.

Kassian is very fair at 3x3, he gets a bit of security and a decent number.

I can't see him getting 4 years or 4M per on the open market, so it'd be dumb for the Oilers to go that high.
