Should buy low on athanasiou. Exactly the type of buy low we need to be looking into.

I mean sure, but what does "buy low" translate to in actual asking price? Yzerman may also overcharge because he doesn't want to look like he's capitulating to his old boss/mentor.

Who do you take off their PP1 for Kovy??

You can always toss in a rotation beyond McDrai depending on situation.

While I love the McDavid-Nuge-Draisaitl look (I mean, how can you not), it doesn't hurt to have other options beyond that

There's a part of me that would be curious to see a unit of McDavid, Draisaitl, Bear, and Kovy (so two righties and two lefties) continually setting up quick shots with Neal in front.

It gives you options to pick your opponent apart:

Does the other team take away the middle, forcing low percentage plays from the outside?
--> Then open up a firing gallery featuring Kovy, Draisaitl, and Neal, plus McDavid and Bear.

Do they operate a high pressure PK that looks to take away time and space?
--> then have McDavid and Draisaitl at each faceoff circle to exploit the wide open seams with Nuge in the slot.

I wish Chia had a little bit more reluctance. I'm betting Toronto fans are wishing Dudas had a little more reluctance.

It shows me he has a plan and he is going to stick to it. Not jumping head first at the first opportunity that comes his way.

Yeah if Chia had any patience or a brain in his head we'd probably have us a Cup contender now.

That said, sticking to a plan is only as smart as the plan itself. And like I said, drafting and development isn't a plan. The plan better involve being very aggressive this offseason because tinkering on the margins isn't going to fix a damn thing.

I think we will continue to see small tinkering moves like Nygard and Haas. If we find a couple more of them we might actually, almost, have some depth.

Then the team isn't going to go anywhere. You aren't going to fix the total lack of 5v5 scoring by rummaging through the dumpster again.

With Mantha and Bertuzzi also pending RFA's, Detroit may consider dealing Athanasiou. Gagner would probably have to go the other way to make the cap work, or maybe someone like Benning would clear enough. What does Detroit need? I'd be willing to part with Yamamoto or Puljujarvi for AA, and probably throw in another decent piece.

Bob McKenzie on insider trading said Zack Kassian preliminary talks have begun on an extension. He wondered if Kassian would want 3-5 years.

He then said the Nurse negotiation is trickier because the Oilers can't go long-term or else the number would be too high. Speculated it could be more of a 2 year to 5 year deal and that Nurse may even go to arbitration.

"Rick Curran was in Dallas on Monday and met with Holland. Kassian will try to parlay strong play into a multi-year deal."

"Nurse is 2 years away from UFA. He wants to stay but you can't do a 6+ year deal because the numbers are too big. It could be a 4-5 year deal, it could be a two-year, it's complicated. If it's a two-year, he has arbitration rights and could just elect that."

Well I mean, Nurses absolute top end should be 6 as Morrissey signed for more and Morrissey is a better player.

Interesting how Winnipeg loses all of their top 3 D and it makes basically no difference.

Nurse would be UFA after a two year deal?

They lost 3 of their top 4. Morrissey was arguably their best defender and he is still there.

Pionk actually seemed like he was underrated and kind of is filling in for Trouba pretty easily.

The rest of the d is doing fine but Hellebuyck and their forward depth is dragging them along. They have a lot of strong forwards which give the defense less work to do

The Flames are interested in Kovalchuk. Cute.
A bit of an odd strategy taking all the Pacific division failures and hoping you can turn them all around simultaneously. I hope they land him, maybe Holland should hint that he's getting involved just to bid the price up and then just laugh at them when it predictably blows up in their faces.
