I like targeting Brandon Saad with some salary retention.

That's another 20 goal scorer injected into the top 6 and he has some speed and experience.

Was always a big fan of Saad. (Though trading Panarin to get him back was ludicrous.). I think he'd do well here.

The problem with hanging your hat on drafting and developing at this point is that even if the new regime is more competent than those of the past, none of the players they pick are likely to help the team in the next few years. Short of finding the next Barzal in the bottom 10 or the team free-falling down the standings into the bottom 10, drafting and development at this point is just another way of kicking the can down the road.

There's a middle ground between trading for a former MVP rental and doing nothing. You can draft and develop and improve the roster without sacrificing key futures for a few month fix.

I'll use the Fabbri example again. Got a talented young player with an injury history and a victim of a numbers game for a player worse than Khaira. Criticize Holland for missing out on him. It doesn't have to be Hall or bust.

Yes, but I think they also need to eventually do something more substantive than taking flyers on maybes like Fabbri. Yes it can work out but you can also strike out on that.

There's no excuse to not add a Toffoli at least this year.

I mean I guess. He's walking away from $12m+, that's not nothing.

He walked away from more in NJ. A lot more. The guy has a pattern of signing for the dollar signs and not really working out.

Bottom line is Kovalchuk is a crappy teammate, doesn't play any defense, and would require the Oilers to overpay for him in order to outbid the KHL.

I was a huge fan way back when he was a Thrasher but that's in the past. He's not a good option.

Everyone knew that this year was supposed to be an evaluation year since Holland was handcuffed by the cap and bad contract management. It’s not like the team isn’t trying to win but the players and fans knew this at the start of the year. Right now we’re in a great spot but our 1st shouldn’t be made available until closer to the trade deadline when we know what kind of team we actually are.

if we’re a fringe team then keep the pick. If we have a top 3 spot locked up then trade the pick. As of now this team lies on the shoulders of McDavid, Draisaitl and Koskinen. Next year we will have more options for depth.

It's not that it can't be done. I'm just not sure I have any confidence that the people in charge here are capable fo doing it. Given your own example here, combined with Holland's reluctance to spend a 1st round pick in the pursuit of Hall, what makes you think he's capable of doing what needs to be done here?

Chayka says the Coyotes and Hall won't talk about a contract extension until after the season is over.

I wish Chia had a little bit more reluctance. I'm betting Toronto fans are wishing Dudas had a little more reluctance.

It shows me he has a plan and he is going to stick to it. Not jumping head first at the first opportunity that comes his way.
