Ellis ranked #5 on SB Nations top 15 NCAA free agents, #2 goalie

5. Nick Ellis, junior goalie, Providence(#62 on Top 100 NHL prospects list)

Ellis spent the past two seasons waiting in the wings behind superstar goalie Jon Gillies at Providence. But this year, as the team's top goalie, he's been able to shine. Ellis brings a good mix of size and athleticism and has been very effective in net all season.

I don't know if I like this Ellis signing without knowing what the goalie depth chart will be like.

I don't think Brossoit is immediately ready to be back-up as he's shown as in the past month.

If Ellis was backing up Brossoit to start in Bakersfield then all good, but where does Laurikainen fit? Or Lundstrom?

I feel like they're just going to peg Brossoit as next year's backup when he hasn't played well enough.

Well, he has wicked numbers this year. That said, it's his first year as a starter in the NCAA.

I wonder where he goes? Isn't it obvious that Brossoit needs to go back to Bakersfield next year and start? What happens to Laurikainen? Back to Finland?

I hope this Ellis dude is OK with possible ECHL time.

Nice pickup if that's true. Guy has great college numbers and just turned 22.

The idea should be to create competition at all positions, right down to AHL starter and backup.

They're definitely not qualifying Lundstrom.

Ellis probably starts for the majority of the year in the ECHL then goes to Bakersfield towards the end when they call up Brossoit.

And agreed, this is much better than Yann Dannis getting 50 starts in OKC.

I think Oilers are way beyond point of trying to accommodate current players. They need to create competition. Sign as many good prospects as you can and have intense internal battle. If a current prospect is cut loose because newbie ate their lunch, too bad so sad

Eetu was a FA signing, so if he returns to Finland because we upgraded is that really a loss? For him yes. But for Oilers its a win. These goalies will have to train super hard and bring their A game for camp

Him playing only 1 year is a double edge sword. On one hand was it just a flukey year? on the other, if you didnt sign him and wait for next year and he posts a 0.935 again, you can bet there will be a bidding war. Its not like he was a 0.900 starting goalie and then turned it on. He had 5 and 7 starts the season before. Maybe he is a true 0.936 goalie and a gem

I'm growing on giving Hall another chance with a better team build around him. I don't blame him for slowing down this year. Guy always tries to carry a dead team. Give him something to play for next year.

I am crossing my fingers that if the Oilers don't get 1st ovr pick they can trade the 2nd or 3rd ovr pick to columbus with an add like Yak or another pick to get Jones back.

If Ryan Johansen didn't freaking implode in Columbus, we'd probably sitting pretty with Seth Jones right now and basically all the core pieces would be in place. Our time will come though.

Hall won't get moved. But that's not really interesting. What is interesting is whether Jordan Eberle gets moved. Everyone knows that Yakupov won't be here next year, but if the Oilers decide to trade Eberle, then won't they have a serious problem on the right wing? Who is there, if not Yakupov or Eberle.

The left side seems shored up. Anyone of Hall, Maroon, and Pouliot can play on the top line on the left side. Which makes me wonder:

Do the Oilers does that make RNH the likely target for a trade, out of him, Hall, and Eberle? I'm starting to really doubt the viability of trading Eberle. Indeed, I'm starting to be convinced that they don't trade him.

Lots of options. Perhaps Laine gets drafted here. UFA, other trades. Frankly, I don't give a crap about our rw depth right now. Our C depth still needs some veteran help, and our D is still a cluster ****. Fix those things first. Finding secondary scoring will be the easiest task when all other holes are filled.

Trading Hall would be stupid cuz I'm confident Chiarelli will do enough to build the D corps and be able to keep him.

I could have sworn Hall was gone for sure for Hamonic, Halak, and Bailey?

But for real, I'm glad they aren't moving him.

We need to add 2-3 guys with a really high "give-a-****" meter.

Guys who care about keeping the puck out of their own net just as much as they care about scoring.

The more I think about it, the more I think the Oilers need to trade the top 5 pick for a player that does those things now. Even trading down and adding a salary dump like Korpi/Fayne would do wonders if you can get that kind of player. If the pick is top 2 it would need to be a very good return though.

I agree, but I'd phrase it as we need guys who are embarrassed to lose. You can tell how much it pisses off guys like McDavid and Maroon. Hall for example plays flat out, but he's also started to fall into the trap of accepting losing. We need guys to come in and turn them around

I really don't want to trade Nurse but I notice a lot of people talking about trading Nurse in the first few pages of this thread so I'll ask this.... would Nurse + Ebs for Hamonic make sense to you guys? Maybe the Islanders add a little bit. Maybe the Islanders don't because they take on more salary and it makes us a more competitive team now.

I don't wanna let go of Nurse, but Sekera, Davidson, Klefbom and Nurse are all lefties and I don't see us making a deal with the Ducks or the Blues.

I see Hamonic and Trouba as Edmonton's main targets.

Sekera-Hamonic
Klefbom-Trouba
Davidson-Osterle
Fayne

Everyone is playing in their natural position, got some grit, size and puck moving upside on all of those pairings.

Fayne gets traded ASAP.

I think Edmonton could offer Reinhart + Hopkins for Trouba + solid bottom six forward. Maybe the Islanders pitch in a little bit more. You can complain that Edmonton coughed up a lot to get Reinhart. I'll just pencil that in as bad asset management.

Anyone else watching this NoDak / Denver game? First off, great game. Second they said MacT was there scouting.

NoDak has two guys the Oilers are most definitely scouting; Troy Stecher and Drake Caggulia. Both have looked fantastic tonight. Stecher would be a really nice add to our system. Caggulia I bet will be able to pick from all 30 teams. Kid is a stud.

Hoping having Simpson in Bakersfield will help give us an upper hand with those guys.

In case anyone is interested, college free agent Center Joey Benik has just started playing some games for The Condors (2 games so far). He is an undersized skilled forward but is ranked #2 on ISS's college free agent list. Maybe the Oilers could have a leg up on him. I know we don't need more small skilled players but college free agents are always low risk and the highly rated ones can at least help out the farm.

What do you guys think?

He also signed a 1 year deal to play for Bakersfield next year. Oilers have 2 of those top 5 guys under wraps for next year now. Not bad.

There is no way provided we don't lose 4 forwards and 2 D all at once that team won't be better right?
