Rumor: Big Changes Coming to HNIC Panel

So be it if they replace hosts but if it's the same production don't know how much difference it would make. Ralph Mellanby created Coaches Corner to be controversial and it was entertaining for many years (Howie Meeker was fun before that). The Hot Stove went back to when there were 6 teams. Those were the staples of the intermissions that someone decided weren't important. They need to put some spice back into the show.

I think a lot of that has to do with the continuous 24 hour news cycle and the fact that any breaking news or rumors are virtually instantaneous now thanks to social media.

I used to love Hot Stove with John Davidson, John Garrett and Co. because you'd get the latest news around the league and potentially juicy rumors about player movement. It was sort of a weekly catch-up on what was going on.

Now, by the time they talk about that stuff, I already know it and it's already been discussed by any number of online personalities, podcasters, commentator Twitter accounts, etc.

By the time the "insiders" are talking on TV, whether Sportsnet/CBC or TSN, there usually isn't a lot of revelation, but just a re-hashing of what we already know.

Maybe it's better for the casual fans, I don't know.

So what are you left with? Analysis of the game at hand, really. They need to come up with better segments around that.

One thing I did sort of like during the World Juniors was demonstrating the various drills that young hockey players perform these days, and their value in terms of play on the ice. What the kids are learning to do these days blows my mind in terms of advances in on-ice instruction and practice.

Maybe they should do some pre-made segments on tactical aspects of the game that the average fan might not know about, with decent production values and such.

I know that some people like the "fake football field" or "fake ice surface" with the personalities out there in their shoes holding a stick or whatever, but I always felt that those demos ended up looking cheesy.

I'd like to see more about what the teams are actually doing on the ice and what all these "systems" mean. I don't play so I don't understand it. I remember the CFL had a segment a few years ago where the players themselves explained the plays and their routes or whatever they were doing on the field on a specific play and it was really interesting - it's not just a bunch of guys running around randomly but very carefully thought out.

if they are keeping friedman only then maybe they are ditching the whole intermission thing and just running highlight packages from sports central and small bits by friedman and other local commentators getting paid a modest piece rate. when john garrett retired last spring he said he would continue doing stuff for sportsnet so i suspected it would be small intermission bits.

have to think bieksa, botteril and amber at minimum would be moved sideways not turfed. maclean can be retired or reduced to that crosscountry checkup sunday thing.

I like Bieksa in that he has a bit of a personality.

I won't miss his tendency to end every sentence with a rising inflection like he's asking a question?

I do know that he was a big hit with some of the ladies I know watching from home.

Kelly Hrudey and Ron MacLean are class acts but maybe it's just their time.

Jennifer Botterill wasn't really there long enough for me to form an opinion, but I'd bring in someone like Cheryl Pounder if they are looking for a solid female perspective.
MacLean gone? Oh too bad - hope it's true
What a backstabber

Don't blame Mclean for Cherry's inability to not say racist shit on tv. Mclean didn't get Cherry fired, Don Cherry did that all by himself. Some people need to stop blaming others for everything is wrong in their lives and take full responsibility for own actions.

Jay Onrait didn't quit when they let Dan O'Toole go.

He still has a life and a family and a career of his own to consider.

I'll be shocked if Ron is gone. Berger is really taking some broad jumps at possibilities based on one qualified sentence from his source. Feels more like click bait then inside info reading it. I can see tinkering with stuff, but they've tried moving off Ron before and the viewing public spoke. It would be the same thing again, 100%. HNIC demographics are not the same as those of us round here at the crazed hockey fan internet parts.

BTW, when does this horrible SN TV deal expire?
3 years left I think.

edit: @NyQuil, it's been an age. How ya doing?

Why cut Bieksa? I thought he was good.
Ive heard that Bieska is good.

McClean is nauseating. Bottrelli is terrible. Hrudey is a sap.
I haven't seen much of Bieska , simply because I turn the channel when the panel comes on .....been doing so since before they even put Bieska in there.
Would be great if Bergers report turns out to be true

Keep Bieksa and Friedman for sure… I like Botterill as well.

Fire MacLean and Hrudey into the sun… and don’t you f’n dare bring on Cassie Campbell.
Campbell is the definitely one who could make that lame panel even worse

HNIC intermission panel hosted by Lizzo with panelists Jessica Allen, Akim Aliu, and Shireen Ahmed debate why hockey is problematic because the non-intersectionality can lead to inter generational trauma, and how more inclusive discourse can lead to equitable outcomes in hockey for marginalized groups
Well it's Rogers that's running the show......

so yeah, the above quote sounds exactly like what they have in mind

Unless my eyes are lying McClean gives a thumbs up at the end of Cherry's rant lol.

I will never forget when Jennifer Botterill went full on crazy during JerseyGate. May she live out her remaining days coaching our women to future Gold Medals, but I never want to see her on my television ever again.

Honestly, what does it matter? This panel of commentators seemed no better or worse than the generic ones, spouting drivel and human interest stories between segments of any sporting event, on any given channel. What was really so terrible about them, and who would be better when everyone seems to be on equal footing when it comes to worthless, lowest common denominator commentating?
