According to reports, there was disagreement among the scouting staff, so, no, it wasn’t an automatic pick, & Hextall chose poorly.

the draft is based apon who can play now, teams drool over that don’t worry about who is better in 5 years. It was also the Oilers problem to for many years. Teams pass on players all the time in different sports, for various reasons. Never heard about concussion problems in junior for patty. He did take a few hits that I though he may have gotten a concussion. It doesn’t take much. I know I have had at least two from hockey. It’s a wait and see with Patrick, hopefully he can get back soon.

Hextall was fired because he and Pryor micro managed the team, players were not allowed to have certain people in the locker rooms. Hextall was a hard ass. If you scored on him at practice and he didn’t like it he would shoot the puck at you. That’s how he ran the flyers org and the team started to lose money too.

Foerster doesn't have to be a great player for this to be a good pick, at #23, if he turns out to be a 3RW who pots 15-20 goals a year without being a liability on defense, it's a good pick.

The strange thing about this draft was picking 3 RH forwards, which I have to think was an accident, while we needed better depth at RW, now we're a bit lopsided toward this side.

Laczysnski, Allison, Brink, Foerster, Wisdom, McClennon.

I don't understand this take...

I think the irrational fans who've been screaming for a sniper are happy with this pick. However, they might be unhappy long term since he's not a prototypical sniper.

There are some reasonable complaints about the skating weakness and the emphasis on character that seemed to bump his ranking on the Flyers' board.

I'm torn. There were some pretty good players available, Peterka and Perreault to name two I liked. However, this kid is a big strong kid who has clearly been working all summer on his skating. He can score from a distance, has great hockey sense and offensive instincts and is a playmaker as well as a sniper. What's not to like? Hockey News compared him to James Neal, IIRC. If that's what he turns into: a 25-30 goal scorer, pain in the butt Hartnell-Neal type, that's a pretty good hockey player, isn't it? I'll say what I always say: you have scouts for a reason, and they are good. Trust the scouts, wish the kid luck, and we'll see. :)

Read Meltzer's article. There wasn't agreement among the scouting staff.
Agreement on Hischier or Patrick, sure, there was no third party considered and that was painfully obvious to the entire world. I challenge you to find one mock on the entire internet that didn't have them one and two. Hextall made the clear obvious choice, it didn't work out.

Well, I know Bill Meltzer and if, in chatting with the scouts, they told him it wasn't a pure consensus, I believe it. He works for the Flyers and has access to the team personnel. Why is it hard to think one or two of the professional scouts didn't like Heiskanen or Makar more than Patrick - they are both excellent players and the scouts have access to more info than we do.

And I would not say it hasn't worked out. Maybe not yet, but Patrick was coming into his own until he got derailed by injury. I have every hope he will rebound this year and be a great player for the Flyers going forward.

You're completely wrong, post any article to suggest this. The top two were clear.
You're completely wrong. The article was posted, thanks to @flyersnorth .

There was another player -- a rising defenseman -- who had support in the scouting staff over Patrick. The implications are Makar.
