- It's actually a challenge for me. I used to play a couple of games in the center, I always liked it. The whole game goes through you, you conduct a trio or all five. I am generally comfortable doing this. Roman Borisovich said that he saw me in the center, and I was only glad. Of course, I myself am happy to play anywhere - even as a defender, even as a goalkeeper, I will give all my best in any position. The main thing is that the team wins.

- So this is Rotenberg's proposal?

- It's a joint decision. I myself wanted to ask to play in the center this season, but Roman Borisovich got ahead of me.

- When did you last play in the center?

- In "Sochi" one of the matches. But so that constantly, never happened. I'm glad it turned out that way. I will try to keep adding, I always like to discover something new. I want to improve the game in the center.

- Did you study someone's experience before going to the center?

- When I found out that I would play in the center, I came home, opened the computer and began to study how the center plays. But I watched the video of Sidney Crosby. And not goals and actions in attack, but how he works out in defense. Analysts also helped me later, showed how other hockey players act in defense, and in general what functions the central one has. I tried to do all this today, - said Michkov.

And a quote from Rotenberg:

- How did you decide to put Michkov in the center?

- Matvey has the best game thinking. You saw perfectly how well he thinks on the ice. This is an interesting solution.

We talked to him and found out that he always dreamed of playing in the center. He is not the biggest and most powerful player, but he has skills that many other players do not have.

Matvey sees the clearing very well, he can give a pass, he can score. If you look at the statistics, he was one of the best face-offs today. This is our future.

I hope that this is a central striker, who will be helped by both SKA and the Russian team. Let's look further. But today it is a very correct decision.

Michkov has many of the qualities we saw in Soviet hockey, like Vyacheslav Bykov and Igor Larionov .

It has the potential to become a very good centre. Matvey has been playing at the center since the first day of our training camp,” said SKA head coach Roman Rotenberg.

I have no evidence but i'm willing to bet the Center idea was implanted in Michkov while he was spending time with the Flyers brass lol

Haven't seen him play enough outside of highlights to comment on whether or not it's a good idea long-term or not.

And just remember, even if Torts isn't coach anymore, bet on Lappy taking his place with the same lame-as-shit mindset.

I think for me, I don't hate Briere and Jones (it's purely wait and see at this point), but the fact that Torts is in the fold right now as a coach and may even possibly be given a front desk position when he's done coaching scares the shit out of me for new and skilled players. Torts has too many old and biased dispositions that don't just go away and has for YEARS acted like the man yelling at clouds.

Get rid of Torts, keep Lappy in AHL or chuck him into the sun, and bring in a proper, progressive thinking coach. Someone, you know, who gives a shit about communicating with his players and wants the young players to do their thing and work through issues?
"How do you say 'You gotta earn it, kid' in Russian?"

"Тебе нужно это заработать, малыш."

Or

"Парень, ты должен это заслужить своим трудом".

Future head coach Ian Laperrière thanks you both for your assistance. He might need a tiny bit of help with pronunciation.

Michkov at C solves all the Flyers problems up front.

They are stacked at RW - so Cutter to LW and MM to C means they have a cup caliber top line and it pushes everybody else down one.

If they find 1 stud D, off to the races.

Lol like Torts is gonna allow a 5'10", offensive first center. Gtfo.

It would be great for the team though. They can def fill out wing.

Gauthier-Michkov-TK
Farabee-Frost-Foerser
Cates-Coots-Tippett
He will.

If MM models his game after Crosby, who is the worlds best grinder, Torts will LOVE him.

lets be realistic with the expectations we put on Michkov, he's going to be better than crosby in every way plus bilingual

I want him playing wherever he will be most effective. You dont need your best player to be a Center to win a Cup. Tampa Bay (Kucherov), Chicago (Kane), and many others have proven this.
That’s true but they also actually had high-end centers to play with. We don’t have one, we’re hoping someone who is naturalized at wing can move to center.

By the time Michkov gets here:

Eiserman/Celebrini - Michkov - Konecny
Gauthier - Couts - Tippett
Farabee - Frost - Foerster
Desnoyers - xxxx - Lycksell

Maybe?
This is reasonable for sure, even if we dont draft a forward this year and end up with a potential top pair defense theres only 2 forward spots to fill. If Michkov develops as a center he would immediately be our best center. I might even hold on to Cates and move him to Michkov's line as the LW there. Coots is 3C just based on his age by this point, but the whole middle 6 could rotate for different deployments, the top 9 could rotate really

Cates - Michkov - TK
Gauthier - Frost - Tippett
Farabee - Couturier - Foerster
Desnoyers - ??? - Brink/Lycksell/Kaplan

Cates as the top LW is a f***ing nightmare...
Its a lot more realistic than planning for a 1st OA center, i think if Cates keeps putting up selke vote seasons he could be a perfect complement on a Michkov line. You could absolutely put a scorer on the left side anytime but a defensive forward there makes a lot of sense to me

I have absolutely no idea why Cates would be the 1LW when we have Gauthier and esp since we currently have a coach that is making sure Cates stay as a center.

Gauthier is unproven at the NHL level, Cates is a natural LW. If michkov comes over as a center theres no need to have Cates play center, and his defensive game is already NHL level so he makes the most sense. Gauthier is more of a scorer, Farabee isnt known for his defense either so it didnt make sense for him to play top line. We already know Cates can play top line minutes against top lines,, and 3 years from now he's probably gotten better at it.
