Keller is a better skater no? I have a hard time finding a current player comp. The guy he reminds me of most is Alex Tanguay.

Tanguay is from early on in my fanhood. I never thought of him as anything special is that because of he played with or was he more of a role player?

Id only flirt with signing Gabe if he leads the nation in scoring, wins the hobey baker and crushes the frozen four.

There is a certain point where people out grow their competition. Leo Carlsson him if he does that but it’s unlikely he hits those heights.

Can’t see any scenario that doesn’t involve an injury where he’d need a year beyond his sophomore season.

I think Tanguay was definitely a secondary piece on that team but that’s only because he was playing with two HOFers. He was an important part of the chemistry of those teams and even had his best statistical output with Calgary after he left the Avalanche.

Memory is foggy for me a bit too, but from what I remember Tanguay was just a cerebral player who didn’t wow you with speed or any other skill really but still produced points seemingly with ease.

I think Giroux is a good comp for Gabe.

Was thinking about this earlier...

How many guys selected in this last draft are clear takes over Perreault right now?

For me its:

The top 3
Michkov
Benson

I'd take Leonard too but its closer. I have zero visibility into the 2 Russians that Arizona took or how Sandin-Pellikka has looked in the SHL (he looked very good at the WJC.)

It would take some serious mitigating circumstances for me to be ok with that. He likely will not need the development, and you’re getting dangerously close to walk for free territory at that point.

Yeah and I'm not understanding the idea that he needs to prove himself away from Smith and Leonard and not vice versa.

Anyone who has watched them this year and is being honest should be able to pick out the guy who has benefited from playing with the other 2 (and it was the highest pick of the 3!)

Wood, Moore, and risk/reward I might have taken Sale as well.

I hope he forces their hand after his 2nd year of course. But the Rangers are always very cautious, overly cautious, with this stuff.

The main concern will probably be his (lack of) physicality. If he can make strides in that department, it makes a 2025 ELC pretty much a given.

I'm really hoping he's the home run. Laf I have renewed hope for. He really showed me his mettle this year and gave me hope he'll improve his shot long term. We haven't had a superstar home grown talent since I've been watching for over 20 years. Gabe would be extra cool because he wasn't a top pick.

The only 1st rounders i can say for sure i'd have taken over Perreault would be the Top 3 and Michkov. Benson was in same tier with Perreault for me pre-draft. Leonard up there as well. Was a hot take pre-draft, but i've just never seen it with Smith. Idk that he'll bust, but imo he's the most likely of the NTDP line to do so.

I wouldn't have taken any of those over Perreault, especially Sale.

Thats a very hot take.
Smith seems very much like Cooley to me.
Im not focusing on points, pure talent and what ive seen of him. And I had cooley at 1 in his draft class.

I like Cooley's vision and IQ way more. Smith is a guy that I just think will end up being less than the sum of his parts. Something is just...off, there.

IQ and vision are hard to really identify with that entire line. Theyve played together for what 3 years now?
Hard to identify those two things when theyre that coordinated.
Thats why theres people who say they need to split the line up.

Also hard to really challenge IQ when smith is ahead of the play due to speed. Thats one of the reasons we got burned with Hajak. He was faster than most defenseman so we didnt realize he was a step slow to plays.
