Finishing 4th last has nearly a 66% chance of actually picking at 5 or 6. There’s really not a big difference between 3rd or 4th, or 4th or 5th, and there’s no hopes of finishing lower than that. I really would not get too torn up about where we place as long as it’s in that 4-6 range.
 
Pens after the next 2 drafts will have more quality to work with. Dubas did bring in much more quantity but now the needs are top 6 forwards/centers. Not much history of teams trading top 4 picks so Pens in say top 7 still get a very good player. But looking at Misa, he is a dynamic center. McQueen or one of the other centers is still a positive. I do think Dubas will be active to get into the top 12 besides the Rangers pick if there. Rust to Detroit perhaps.

We’re gonna suck for a bit so I’m just interested in amassing talent. Centers will come eventually if we don’t get one with either pick this year. Can also always sign FAs.


Eklund & Aitcheson aren’t The Guy types but they are Guys.

In the long run it probably doesn't matter. But most scouts feel there's a drop after the top 5 then another drop off from 15-2×. Seems like it would be a good idea to get that second first inside the top 15. If the cost isn't exorbitant.

They can’t be taking a “safe pick” with the range they are picking.

If we are getting a top ten draft pick we need to target Desnoyers or Eklund not a player who if they peak is Travis Sanheim.

Frondell is likely going to the U18s and probably nobody else slated in the top 8 will for various reasons so scouts are going to have him dominating kids fresh in their memory.

To be fair, it was a shitty draft to begin with and Shane Wright Shane Wright'ed himself. There was no need for hit pieces.

Hagens doesn't have that reputation.
 
Hagens is just having a somewhat disappointing draft year, but Kessel did too. And someone on the prospects forum pointed out that BC’s PP is uncharacteristically bad this year, which yeah he’s a big part of, but that’s the primary difference in production compared to Will Smith last year.

Logan Cooley is one of the best young centers in the game and a franchise player for Utah.

Lane Hutson is putting up Makar numbers.

Matyechuk is going to be a future stud for Columbus.

Wright has been a revelation for Seattle this year and was a huge part of their b2b runs to the Calder cup.

Miro, Nazar, Kasper, Lamoureux, and Geekie are all great.

Try and be aware of other teams.

I feel like I might be a bit out to lunch on Martone as not challenging for a top 2 spot. I stand on my opinions, but a bunch of people I've spoken to seem higher on him as a play driver than me and A LOT higher on his physicality.

Im going to try to catch him live a few more times, hopefully in some playoff games, before the end of the season.

That's what the consensus opinion is on Pensburgh as well. Consistently good players but nothing special at the top of the draft with a ton of busts after that.
 
I'm just hoping the Penguins get lucky and win the draft lottery this year. I think Schaefer is probably NHL ready next year and this team's LD group is absolutely atrocious. This team still needs to be adding more, but Schaefer, Brunicke and Pickering as D prospects is a really nice start.

If they somehow managed to pull off Clarke for Rakell, I would have loved a long-term top-4 D of:

Schaefer-Brunicke
Pickering-Clarke

I prefer being strong down the middle, and that's really always been Pittsburgh's identity, so I hope we find a way to land Hagens or Misa. Plus, they'd have about the best mentor possible in Sid.

This also assumes the Pens will manage to somehow add a really good #1 defenseman along the way, as they do.

Nah Schaefer is a significant step up from Hagens or Misa. You take the BPA.
