You have to try it more than that. Picking ten and in the teens is no guarantee.

And the Lias Andersson draft was just shit luck.

i'm saying the speculation on both sides is worthless. i'm not claiming he would have signed here even if we paid him 20mm a year. I don't know what he was basing his decision on. i contend if we'd really wanted to we could have fit both gav and kandre. but that's just my speculation.

the part i disagree with you on is your characterization of "2 years of awful play."

i won't dispute that he had some bad giveaways late in games that led directly to goals against. those ones hurt and they always LOOKED terrible. like the WJC giveaway that laf scored on. Dunderhead shit.

Wrong. wrong wrong wrong. analytically wrong, eye-testingly wrong, fundamentally and foundationally wrong. that's the part of this boards groupthink that i take issue with.

Again, I was never part of the group-think. I had qualms about signing him long-term for the $$ he reportedly wanted, but my preference was to bridge him.

As to the bolded, I don't even know what to say to that, because it is absolutely obvious to anyone that KAM took a MASSIVE step backwards in 23-24 (13 point dip in scoring, more frequent examples of the "dunderhead shit," etc). Even then, what bothered me more was what we weren't seeing anymore. In 22-23 (and earlier), Key was fun to watch because you could see the 1D potential. I remember multiple occasions where an opponent would look to be on a breakaway, and Key would fly in out of nowhere to poke the puck away. When he turned on the jets, he seemed like he could catch anyone.

His last two years here? You never saw that anymore. He looked more disengaged. Less willing to take the body. Lazier with his stick. The offense dried up. All of that is on top of the turnovers.

I'm happy for the kid that he turned it around. With the Rangers out of the playoffs this year, I was pulling for Carolina BECAUSE they had Miller. But none of that erases the fact that he played himself out of a big extension in his last two seasons here, OR that Drury did a good job of getting a solid package of assets for a player insisting on a contract he hadn't earned. Sometimes a guy is just a better fit (mentally) for a different market. I believe Key is one of those guys.

i respect your opinion but disagree wholesale with this characterization of his play. You sound like me discussing Conor Sheary: devaluing or refusing to acknowledge anything good he does while loudly highlighting exclusively bad things.

Saw a post about this on X apparently his garnering a good amount of attention. Wouldn't hate it, honestly those are the kind of moves Drury should be making assuming the price tag isn't insane. Reclamation projects, hole fillers, stop gaps while the kids develop. Low risk stuff you can move on from later at the deadline for assets. However I doubt Poolparty is looking to ressurrect his career on a bottom feeder.
