That didn’t help.
This any better?

Sam saying, Fletcher mentioned the team will speak with Giroux about an extension AFTER the season.

Why do you think AV doesn’t like York?
I don't think he doesn't like York. I think AV prefers veterans over young players and the fact Schmuck is filling the team with guys that AV is familiar with speaks in volumes about the young players. They aren't going to get a fair shot. That's the reality. Perception is everything and they aren't signing Yandle or Brassard or Thompson to sit in the sidelines.

Flyers have 60+ committed to next year already. Not sure where that ranks league-wide but:

  • Giroux (or another top line forward) needs a contract.
  • Farabee needs a new contract.
  • In an alternate universe, Frost plays and needs a fair contract next season.
  • Ristolainen (or another top 4 RHD) needs a contract.
  • The bottom pair needs to be replaced. I'm guessing York is one.
  • Need a backup goalie.
Moving Sanheim + JVR clears 11.765.

Farabee and Giroux will cost real money. RHD if they want one.
Frost will be cheap, York and Zamula on ELC.
Ersson/Ustimenko most likely to be the backup goalie, Fedotov and Sandstrom in the AHL as insurance

JVR is probably the only move, and as much about playing the young forwards, Lindblom, Frost, Allison, Farabee, Foerster, Brink, JOB.
G, Couts, TK, Hayes, Atkinson, 1 top six slot and 4 top 9 slots total.

Sanheim could be traded, not so much the cap hit but wanting to open up a slot for York and add a different style of D-man.

moving JVR pretty much fixes any potential cap issues. he'll probably get moved around the draft next summer.

Giroux is not going to break the bank for his 35-37 year old seasons.
He's been here a decade, he has a wife and kid and is settled, this is home at this point.
I mean it's not like he can't afford a 1st class ticket to Toronto anytime he wants to go see family, and a limo at the airport.

he also ain't gonna roll over

I'm getting a pretty good feeling about this team now, with the necessary and expected reservations.

I usually like your posts, but what are you talking about here? Patrick was a black hole for most of his time here. That bottom 6 would have been pretty trash. That defense is abysmal. Maybe Trotz makes it a totally different team, but that just isn't a very impressive roster at all.

What are you talking about? They were a playoff team just the previous year with MacDonald and Hagg (and Manning) playing more of a role, and Filppula instead of JVR. Patrick produced the same in both seasons. The 18-19 team should have been better even without Trotz, but the goalies imploded to start the season and Hak had no clue how to get things back on track. His final gamble was scratching Lindblom for Lehtera.

They were a playoff team by the grace of insane seasons from Ghost and Giroux and 14 OT/SO losses. They cleared the bar by 2 points and had less wins than 3 teams that missed. No way to know how a good coach would have altered player development and all that, but they were not a very good team to start, and I don't think minor tweaks would have changed that. I look at the roster you posted and I see gigantic holes in important places.

I mean, who knows. But I just see it as a rosy remembering of what that team really was.

The 2019-20 team was clearly better than the 2017-18 team, people like to knock Montreal, but the Montreal team we faced wasn't that much different than the team that went to the Finals, both years Price was mediocre in the regular season, on fire in the playoffs, and the team got healthy and jelled each season going into the POs. The 2017-18 team was dominated by the Pens, other than Couts and Provorov, though bad goalie play didn't help.

Both teams faltered the following year due to bad goalie play, but the talent base kept improving.
I expect the 2021-22 team to be better than the 2019-20 team, it's deeper, so it all comes down to Hart.

giroux can easily demand a contract similar to pavelski. Its up to him to take a little discount like couts but he easily can get 6 million and probably should given his production/value. If we do well this year I can see giroux doing a 5 as a home discount so they can improve the team as one last effort to win while he is here though

I think there's a wash next year in money spent on the defense. York z hog etc can fill roles on the cheap.
The competition for wing spots is where it gets tough as there isn't anyone who can do what g does at rfa prices. I can't forecast who even fights for the spot either
