Lawson Crouse would be a perfect add as a power forward. Impossible trade though. Armstrong would ask for Savoie or Kulich.

Also, I thought Cozens would eventually be a winger. He’s proven he’s just a good player who will produce wherever he plays. That’s good news as the organization has centers coming up.

You can never have enough centers.

Thread from Novikov thread, should be discussed here (See 2/5):

This logic fits. It should, however, NOT prevent Adams from shorter term deals to make the team better now. Furthermore, there's no patience model available to fix the defense. That'll have to be through trade or FA, preferably the former.

that has been the strategy of having some cap room to play with the next 3 seasons.
This was the youngest roster in the NHL this season.

They had 6 players that were 29+ on the roster this season. 4 of them are UFAs (Okposo, Girgensons, Hinostroza, & Anderson) with only Skinner and Lyubushkin under contract for next season.

If they are expecting to be a playoff team, they need to add some vets and not just replace from within. Especially since Tuch & Jost are the only players under team control that have played in the 2nd round of the playoffs.

Lyub just turned 29 this week. this season is considered his 28 yr old season.
Anyone else think that the off-season moves are crystal clear?

1. Sign/trade for a 4 d pairing for Power
2. Sign/trade for a tenacious, defensively
responsible top 9 forward
3. Sign/trade for a short term proven starting goalie
4. Resign Girgs
5. Move on from Joker, Olofsson, Bryson, and one of Comrie/UPL. Use them in points #1-3.
6. Explore possibility of new assistant coaches, PK and PP specialists.

possible trade bait are—Joker, Bryson, Olofsson st 50%, and possibly Mittlestadt

i see them looking at a RD to sign or trade for Under contract for 3-4 yrs max unless they are younger U24 On ELC or just signed a long contract.

What short term goalie are you wanting to sign?

If we are spending below the cap floor again next year (and yes, that is still possible if they move out olofsson), it’d be a conversation to have. However, we are speaking in hypotheticals here. Id like to assume our days below the cap floor are over.

they will make the floor. If they were trading Olofsson for futures it’s likely at 50% retained.

I see them making a trade getting salary in return ( not cap dumps)

Given the reports of the goal posts changing higher, thrn they got what they did from Ottawa tells me it’s a rinse repeat on Crouse unless a third team is involved.

Shoulda got one game in
He's talking about the Chychrun trade and how he thinks Armstrong would be a pain in the ass to deal with for Crouse

Armstrong definitely would be,because I know Armstrong would be looking for “young NHL player + high pick OR prospect” until he gets beaten down to what he wants.

Besides salary, JJ is the type of player he wants, and he should look outside of the Sabres to reach the cap floor. Trade for someone else + pick to make up the difference.

Will fix everything
So, one thought I've had is UPL+ to Chicago for Connor Murphy. Chicago has Mzarek in goal and two tweeners (Stauber and Soderblom). They seem like a team who could carry 3 goalies and may want to see if they could tap UPL's potential. Granato is familiar with Murphy from his time as a Chicago assistant. He's an upgrade on Lybushkin....not quite sure given his age if he's QUITE who we want playing with Power, but is contract is reasonable enough he could be a placeholder in the top 4 and move to the bottom pair in '24-25. Of course, that require to find a another top 4 D in the next year.

When has Girgs shut down a top line player consistently? Or ever had a big time goal. If the scoring part of your forward corps is great and all set and you want to improve, maybe replace the bottom line guys ya think? Our PK is atrocious. We can't win face offs. And Girgs sucks as a PKer.

Okposo is done, if he comes back I take it Adams has no interest in contending. He is SLOW. And done.

Hell no.

no moving UPL for an injury prone inflated 30+ yr old Dman.

I mentioned Connor Murphy as the ideal RHD get in the defense thread. He can play as Power's steady partner for one year and then step into Boosh's shoes after.....all while providing steady defense and veteran leadership.

UPL and Joker for Murphy? Sign me up.

Next year for me looks like this.

Tuch-Thompson-Skinner
Quinn-Cozens-Peterka
Greenway-X-Mitts
Girgs-Krebs-Okposo
Jost,Hino/X

Dahlin-Sammy
Power-X
Joker-Boosh
Stillman

X
UPL/Levi

Adams needs to do whatever it takes to get in a #1 goalie with starter experience. I want Varlamov on a 3 yr deal. Overpay if needed.

A vet 3rd line, two way C. Help the PK. Become the go to end of game faceoff guy. Help to build a real strong two way line with Greenway and Mitts. ROR would be a dream. But this needs to be a proven NHL’er. More of a late in his prime, few good years left guy to really help lead the young guys. Adams definitely has the prospects and picks needed to pull this kind of trade.

Top 4 defensive minded D. Basically another Samuelsson to stick with Power. Pushes Boosh and Joker to be 10-12 min a night guys at best

The 14th forward spot can go to Hino. Personally i would prefer a more physical vet.

Not many moves needed but all very important.

I’d be happy with two top 4 defensemen and a lot more commitment to defense should love a lot of woes.

In a perfect world we grab 5 established vets to solve every weakness. But we won’t.

I'd gladly give EJ 5 x 2 to get him to sign. Vet winner, great 2nd pairing guy. 35+ contact but 2 years makes it manageable. I never want to see Bryson as a top 8 guy ever again. He is an AHL dman who should be a #9-10.

I think Varlamov is my favorite option. 2 year deal. Gets Levi to his prime if things go right

They’ll play Levi, Kulich and Savoie next year. It allows them to do what they want to. Sell how young they are, not address holes in the team because it’s another development season…and ice the cheapest lineup they can. They’ll be at the cap floor again. Unaddressed goaltending and defense will cost them again. People will swear it’ll be different the next year…again.

Buffalo Sabres
Best surprise: Casey Mittelstadt

Mittelstadt is closing in on 50 points while playing in a third-line role. Many had written off the 2018 top-10 pick after an injury-plagued 2021-22 season. He’s stayed healthy this year and has been a versatile contributor at both center and wing. In addition to being a strong locker-room presence, Mittelstadt has become a competitive player who can be used in a variety of situations.

Biggest disappointment: Goaltending

The Sabres have recently gotten a few strong games from Devon Levi in his first NHL season, which has dramatically improved the outlook of the team’s goaltending. But for much of the season, injuries and inconsistency plagued the team in net. Craig Anderson, Eric Comrie and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen all had bright moments, but none could sustain it for an extended period of time due to age in Anderson’s case, injuries in Comrie’s and inexperience in Luukkonen’s. — Matthew Fairburn

Interesting I had proposed breaking up the Tage line. I was thinking it would give us more offense since Tuch can drive the line himself.

Will be interesting to see if Mittelstadt can step up or this experiment wont last.

That's an arbitrary competition you have created and it may very well not be how Granato and Adams see things. In fact, I'd be shocked if it was.
You're right. Savoie is going to be competing with the likes of Girgs/Okposo or whoever their replacements are for a shut down/Defensive role...
