The idea that any GM needs a full season evaluation is laughable. The needs now are the same as they were last summer.
I don’t think it’s laughable. I mean different sport but look at how the Bills have slow played the development of some of their players. Before the season no one wanted to pay Edmunds $13M, now people are clamoring for him to get $17-$19m AAV.

For the Sabres look at Thompson’s last 12-18 months. Or Dahlin’s time under Granato.

I’d say Mittelstadt, who has his warts, obviously, in the past 3 months or so has shown he’s a solid, middle-6 wing who can play center in a pinch at a 50pt pace. That’s valuable.

And I’d say the needs have significantly changed. We weren’t sure what Cozens or Krebs were going to solidify into. If they struggled we mugger be looking for a center to push Cozens into a bottom-6 role and Krebs could be playing on the wing as opposed to in the middle so we’d be looking for another center.

Also we didn’t have Jost, so if the previous struggles did occur we’d likely be putting Girgensons at center, and Asplund would likely be an every night player and we’d be seeing players like Biro/Weissbach/Murray up here as opposed to in Rochester.

We also had no idea what UPL provided, and we still aren’t 100% sure. I don’t think he’s going to be a headliner, but he’s seemed to prove he’s at least capable of being a 1B.

While I understand the desire to win (I’d love a big deal for a Meier or a Chychrun or even a Fabbro/Ekholm. I believe the organization also wants to see how these young players perform under the pressure of a playoff push. Look at Thompson last night, taking over that game. They want these young players to develop that tenacity and understanding of the moment.

I’m of the belief they’ll make a small move or two at the deadline, but ultimately we’ll see the major moves in the off-season. One top-6 forward, one top-4 defenseman. One will be through trade, one will be a UFA. If any of Girgensons/Okposo Mittelstadt or Olofsson don’t come back, one will be replaced by said move above, a 2nd could be replaced by a bottom-6 deadline acquisition, and the 3rd & 4th spots would be filled by Rochester ascensions. But I believe at least one of Girgensons/Okposo will be back so only one player from Rochester will ascend.

We have so much money to spend short-term. I really think using It to upgrade the bottom 6, D core, and starting goalie is where It should go.

Move out: Mitts, Olofsson, Asplund, Bryson, Clague, Comrie. Would be pretty easy to upgrade on all of these players. Could accumulate assets on some to acquire better players.

Resign: Jost, Girgs, maybe Okposo on a 1 year deal as a 4th liner/depth rotation

Trade for a forward, a D, maybe a goalie.

Find depth in free agency, or maybe a goalie if there are none via trade that make sense.

Extras: Okposo, Rousek/Kulich/other call up

What would it take to pry Valimaki away from Arizona? Don’t they want to dump anyone of value?

Just curious if anyone uses this site? Has some interesting stats. Seems like Anderson is ranked top 15 in most stats while Comrie is the bottom half and UPL around the middle. Nice site for advanced statistics.

It's where a some of the goals save above expectation and line/tandem info comes from used in conversations here, yes.

I hadn't seen it posted before so I didn't know if it was reliable. The site could use an upgrade so I wasn't sure how good it was. Thanks!

Yep, the data is good, the graphics look like something from 2002.

Other good ones include EvolvingHockey, naturalstattrick, Micah Blake McCurdy/Hockeyviz.com, PuckIQ... I'm sure I'm forgetting some that I have bookmarked.

First off, football player development and hockey player development aren't the same. They just aren't. Hockey players are drafted at 18 and typically have 2 developmental levels below the NHL to play in (where they were drafted and the AHL) NFL players come out at 21 or 22 after playing in college. Their only designations are active roster or practice squad. So, if a NFL player is a bit raw, they might still get playing time. In the NHL you can take 3-4+ years in developmental leagues before coming in the NHL depending on their situation

Second, the original post was talking about needing a year to see what the needs were, specifically relating to the bottom 6, which is mostly veterans. The only player there with untapped upside is Krebs. Everyone else there is near a finished product or on the down slope of their career.

It should be noted that scores of articles have spoke about the unicorn nature of Thompson's development curve. Using him as a template to say "We need more time!" would be foolish.

If we are talking larger roster picture, the needs are largely unchanged from two years ago. The only thing that has drastically changed from the 2020 offseason was we felt we needed

1. A #1 center. Thompson ended up, against all odds, filling that role.
2. Scoring depth (which almost universally felt would be filled in by the young forwards we have drafted)

The PK issue, goaltending issue, defensive depth issues....all still there. More evaluation time won't resolve those issues when internal answers simply aren't coming.

The issue with that is you're neglecting the cut down from scholarships to walk ons in football. So many get cut or are left to rot vice the hockey route. Yes you're drafted later but the weeding out process is more intense. When I played, we had a 2nd round pick CB, a 1st rd CB the next year, a 75 Yr NFL All Pro CB for the Steelers that spent 3yrs as a free safety because the coaches wouldn't start him over the CB. A few players defected and were picked in the first 3rds but we were a middling team. I'm sure it's much worse for the top teams as they promise you glory but you show up and it's a shit show

Hard not to have a bad feeling about Tuch so quickly being put on IR. Most likely what we’ll see tomorrow:

Skinner Thompson Quinn (i hope)
Asplund Cozens Olofsson
Mitts Krebs Peterka ?
Girgs Jost Okposo

Man, this roster really lacks proper depth. They really could have used a trade for a guy like Nino for a 2nd. Adams is sleeping on the job again.

Flip JJ and Quinn. I'd rather see what Peterka can do on the top line. Maybe gives him a little boost?

With how well the Mitts-Krebs-Quinn line has looked, I feel like it would be hard for Donny to break them up.
