I'm really starting to think that Mitts is going to anchor our 3rd line long-term and won't look out of place when he has to move into the top 6 due to injuries. The switch may have finally been flipped.

I've been saying it all year, but I really like Mitts with Quinn. Even when Quinn looks off they always seem to have positive results

he looks so bad defensively. Makes so many odd turnovers. I get not every player on the team can be great. I'm just not seeing it with him. I'd prefer a player with size who does other things needed included defense.

I think he's one of our better forwards when it comes to getting into passing lanes and winning board battles. He could end up scoring 50+ points in a very limited role so I'm impressed either way.

Maybe.....

But I do wonder if maybe Joker is someone we package with a pick and/or a prospect for a better RHD to partner with Power long-term.
That is what I would do. Getting Fabri is a lateral move. Nashville probably wants picks or cheaper labor because they are going to be cap strapped.

Weirdly, my favorite play of his last night was when Clague made the soft pinch on the left wing boards that put four Sabres deep in the Duck's zone and Mitts looked up, saw this, and busted ass to get back to intercept the pass to Comrie's right on the odd-man rush deep in the Sabres zone. He can make those plays and he's gotten a lot better at puck security around both bluelines (same thing that Krebs has had to learn this year). He's been a lot better over the last 6 weeks than the first 6 weeks of the season. His wall work is some of the best on the team and he's been really good at establishing forecheck.

In my opinion, Mitts is our best backchecker. Cozens is pretty close as well. When Mitts is busting ass back into the defensive zone, he sees lanes REALLY well and can get himself in position there.

Where Mitts gets into trouble defensively is when he's established in the defensive zone and in space, something that I think can be fixed over time with plenty of repetition.

But it's those plays in space where he "looks" bad, and it happens to every Sabre not named Cozens, Girgensons or Okposo. I get why Mitts has the "he looks so bad defensively" rep.....but that take really needs to be retired.

I'm not even sure swapping Joker for Fabbri is a lateral move for us........I think the best case with such a swap is that it turns out to be a lateral move. I certainly don't think that swap makes us a better team, at first.

FA rto is

a yr older
an RFA you’d pay more to in the off-season than joker
he's not a top pair D. just because he didn’t last year doesn’t mean he would be.
he has no upside…he’s not coming off an ELC

im not saying not to acquire him, just saying you need to significantly lower your expectations of him. Sure he might work fine with Power. I just

next year nashville has $10M in space and 6 roster spots. Fabbro is an RFA as in Jeannot. They are going to be tight against the cap if thry resign both.

For the folks who have mentioned Orlov, this article is interesting:

And that graphic of his fall off this year at the end of it is kind of scary.

That 3rd line of Mitts and Quinn is going to be a roller coaster of emotions. Massive turnovers mixed with scoring opportunities (hopefully).

No interest in that move. None. It’s a clear and significant downgrade.

Roy would have been on the 04/05 team the full season. Poms and Vanek likely get called up. Gaustead on the team too. They played in Rochester.

Quinn and Peterka did not get fast tracked. Most rookies don’t strp in and put up 50+ pts. Keeping thrm in the A WOULD NOT have mattered. Thry woukd still have to go through the adjustment.

usually you don’t see 21 draft start their ELC till 23/24 season. 22 draft till the season later.

i see Rosen getting called up during 23/24 season. Kulich might as well. Savoie coukd be 4C on next years team because of CHL exclusivity rules.

next year you coukd have

Skinner-tage-tuck
xxx-Cozens-xxx
Girgrnsons-Krebs- xxx
quinn-Savoie-Peterka

xxx are Mitts, Olofsson, and Okposo resigned.
Savoie likely will not be ready next season and back in the CHL

It isn't though? It's actually reasonably close with the edge slightly in Greenway's favor. And keep in mind, this is a down year for Greenway and a banner year for Mittelstadt.
its not a banner year, its called progression

When looking to build our defense long term, I think we need to realize a couple things…

1. Dahlin is not only adept at playing on his off-hand, but I believe it’s better for him. He should generally be considered a “RHD” when putting together a roster.

2. Power is also strongly capable of playing his off hand.

3. Samuelsson will be tied to one of the two throughout his tenure here

4. Samuelsson plays s physical style that we need to have depth behind with someone who plays a similar game.

Taking these things into consideration I believe short term we need a LHD to improve the Bryson spot, but long term are likely looking to improve on Jokhiharju. Regardless, the team should simply find the best defenseman it can, and that player should be able to pair into the top-4 regardless. The main thing is that I believe the player they add to the defense should,
1) be a similar styled player to Samuelsson

2) be a veteran (mid 20’s to early 30’s) with 2-3yrs left on their deal.

Do you have a moment to talk about our lord and savior, Mattias Ekholm?

Rumors floating that Calgary may be shopping Weegar. Shame he signed an 8 year deal, Weegar for 4 years would have been interesting if he was available.

Given the option of Ekholm with 4 years left or Weegar with 8?

Give me Weegar every day and twice on Sunday. His cap hit will look better as the cap eventually goes up.....and if the last 2 years prove onerous, we ditch the contract.

I wish Olofsson could get his game to a consistent level, when he's on he's such a valuable piece to this team but when he's playing in a funk he's useless. If he could play like he was playing in the middle of the season when he popped off like 8 goals in 9 games or something insane like that he would a very valuable piece towards winning a cup. Even without the points, just bringing that level of play all the time.. that would be fantastic.

Will fix everything

He’s beat his previous career high of points by 30% and there is 20 games left in the season.

His production is still pretty mediocre given his draft position and the opportunity handed him, but he’s moved from ‘bustville’ to ‘mediocre middle six nhl forward’

This dude is still trying to make a fetch a thing.

Maybe it's a generational thing, but I feel like we used to want to cheer for the guys that wore our crest, we embraced their imperfections. Maybe I spent too many years loving Rayzor because he was willing to bleed for the logo.

It seems these days most just can't wait to trade every roster imperfection away. So much recency bias and hyperbole around every performance.

I'm in no hurry to make any trades, really enjoying the ride these kids have taken us fans along for so far, all of them...
