Playoff hockey is probably good/great for youth development, but not at the expense of accelerating the rebuild
I'm not sure it's possible for a team to be more ready for "accelerating the rebuild" than being the #1 offense in the league.

How much better does the team need to be before it's ok to spend assets to fill holes?

Accelerating the rebuild prematurely was a huge mistake, but isn't prolonging the rebuild when the team has already progressed to the next level just as big of a mistake?

And ROR literally moped his way off the team and acted like playing for the Sabres was the equivalent of someone kicking his dog?
FIW ROR said almost the same thing this season with the Blues ("losing" the love for the game).

Zub extends with the Senators. Forget that.
f***

A rental bottom 6 guy I think would be relatively affordable would be Max Domi. Pretty versatile guy who has shown he can be productive in a bottom 6 role, hard to play against, and can play both center and wing. Plus I think it would be hilarious to see how Rob Ray handles him on the team.

In the off-season I still hope they look at Miles Wood. Hometown stuff aside, he's a solid bottom 6 contributor, plays well defensively, hard in the corners, and doesn't shy away from physicality.
Murphy + Domi?

Vanek had a good talk about this. Basic theme was, at some point it is time.

Come on people are you really going to let Botterill beat you to the playoffs? rentals all the way!

For a playoff run, if lower cost (or one of the 2nds for a bigger name/term), sure.

But I also think they have potential bottom 6 contributors developing in Roch to give a try ie Biro, Weissbach, Rousek, Kozak, etc. and some hit or miss draft picks as well.

I hope the fact that Biro was a Botterill signing isn't influencing whether or not they give him a shot here. Initially I thought Adams signed him.

He's killing it with the Amerks, and seems poised to make a legitimate impact at the next level.

His speed could really be used on this team in a bottom 6 role.

This is true, but none are ready to do it this year, if they ever are. Remember a 2nd round pick only has a 17% chance of being an NHL player. Make good picks and develop them in hopes of finding core players, but don't overvalue prospects, as the majority will never become part of your team, and even less part of your core.

The debate on Sabres twitter between making moves and being a year away misses the point.

The moves they need to make now are the ones they should have made in the offseason and didn’t. Top 4 D. Goalie. Defensive Center. Can’t get goalie now so it’s ride and likely die with what we have. But you can get the other things.

and here’s why you should. Because those aren’t the moves you were/are a year away from. Next off-season should be fixing the third line, moving on from the pieces that aren’t going to be long term core members, and figuring out the bottom pair D. The reason those are next offseason moves is that we took this season to see who would, and wouldn’t, be a part of it from what we already had here. And that wait can continue,

But,

Adams isn’t going to do all of those things. Adams does very little. We aren’t just one year away…because we are one year behind. Have to catch up so that we can be in position to do the year away things next year.
Why didn’t they build around the top 6 that didn’t exist a month a go? Its a mystery. They‘re a year behind and need to catch up? That word salad at the end is just……..

You seem quite invested in being not only negative but detached from the reality of whats going on. I don’t get why.

Kozak should be captain of his Junior team playing big minutes this season from my GM armchair.

Don't have a problem with the others being on the team when they are ready. Brett Murray too.

And what even does a year behind mean? Behind what? Having every piece? Why is that talked about in terms of time?

What does any of this mean!!!

Just think how crappy the future would look if Adams had gone out last offseason and signed Campbell (goalie), Chiarot (top 4 D), and Copp (3rd line Center).

With Cozens upcoming contract, they would basically be at the cap and would have no wiggle room after Dahlin's extension. Then when Power, Cozens and Peterka were up the following year, there would be major cap casualties, and the team would still be lacking the depth they need for playoff success, and we'd be looking at waiting to get out of a bunch of bad contracts again so we could start the tank and the rebuild all over before even becoming a contender - once again.
Just think how good the present and future would look if Adams had gone out the last 2 offseasons and signed Ullmark (goalie), Forbot/Ian Cole/ruuta/larsson/schultz etc (top 4 D), and Danault (2nd/3rd line Center).

You tirelessly support Adams and everything he's done, yet you don't have the confidence in him to think he'd have signed better UFAs than your 3 or that he will sign good UFAs?

Rousek and Kozak are interesting as I haven't seen them play very much to really gauge what they bring. Maybe even a guy like Cederqvist could be that type of player, I seem to recall he scored a lot of goals in those greasy areas when he was in the SHL. Weissbach and Biro strike me as Hino type of players though.

My thought with Domi or Wood was inserting another player with some jam to their game that will go to the dirty areas and might compliment guys who play more of a skill game like Mitts or Olofsson. I think Okposo played that game well last season, but looks like he's losing some tread on the tires this year, plus he seems to be doing relatively well with Gus on the 4th line. They need someone for the shorter term right now, and possibly even longer term depending upon what direction they go with that bottom 6 group in the offseason.

I'm not sure if we should definitely look for a guy like ROR, we have a lot of people to choose from for the role of 3C now (Mitts, Krebs, Jost) and in the future (Savoie, Kulich, Ostlund), but I think we would need a good winger right now to seriously improve lineup. A guy like Konecny with his contract would be the perfect pickup. But, of course, defense at this stage should be a priority.

Perhaps the close Rochester observers @Chainshot can chime in about Kozak's development this year so far (the numbers are not there), but I think the allure was him working with Peca in Rochester. Your point is valid though. I loved him in camp.

The problem here is that the pipeline is clogged. Krebs and Jost are both in development spots. Girgs and Okposo are solid 4th line vet leaders. So you have 2 spots being fumbled over by Hino, Aspland, Mitts, and Olofsson. All four of those players should have "some" trade value, and would likely be claimed if waived. I know KA wants to maximize trade value, but the four of them fighting over two spots is hurting all of their trade values. Sometimes making the move sooner for less return, gets you more in the long run when the remaining assets can thrive. Got to weed the garden!

We have a guy in our own organization, by the name of Biro, who could very well fill a role for us.

Yes, but he won't get a chance until there's some kind of forwards injury epidemic. There is also Kozak for the future. I think we have everything in order with the depth of attack in the future in all positions, which cannot be said about defense.

True

As long as there are injuries on defense and we seem to be giving AHL guys "tryouts" up here, how about giving Cecconi a shot?

I'm actually serious. I saw him play the other night. Paired with the right guy, I could actually see him helping us. Adds muscle, right handed and honestly when he had to skate showed surprising speed.

D should be the only priority at this point (unless someone is willing to gift us a #1 goalie). But we shouldn't be looking at pure rentals.

Upcoming UFAs who can be resigned long term? That's a different story...

This is a very good point. As far as the logjam at forward goes - it could be possible that addition by subtraction is the best way forward (excuse the pun) .

He's doing the things that will get him further in the pro game - defensively responsible, plays in traffic, wins battles. He has had some time with Kisakov and Cederqvist at the outset of the year, lately during Cederqvist's absence that shuffled with others. They are short on centers in Rochester even with him. He looks like he's picking up the defensive side of the game which is probably the path forward for him.

Does anyone feel like Chychrun could be the missing piece that puts us in the playoffs? Would people be ok with a 1st(top 10 protected) 2nd and Kulich/Ostlund?

I feel like if we could get someone like Chychrun it would push everyone down 1 spot on defense from 3-6

Dahlin Samuelsson
Chychrun Power

Could be the best top 4 in the league.

Lots of chatter Buffalo is still in on it. At what sacrifice is it worth it?
