Being up against the cap in 2025-2026 is not an excuse for being $25 million under the cap in 2022, it's all the more reason they should spend some of it now.

We have plenty of room for a $5-7million aav top 4 defenseman long term.
Well there are these things called contracts, so things you do one year impacts future years.

They do have that much room but can only do it once, and then you're stuck with that player for 7 years...and they're barely ever available in the first place, so I can understand why it's not happening, even if the GM agreed in theory.

JEFF MAREK: I think Buffalo is still in contention for Arizona defenseman Jacob Chychrun.

LANCE LYSOWSKI: Several sources confirm Buffalo interest in Jacob Chychrun.

How does Lance have "several" sources in the Sabres FO?

Again......take any leak with one gigantic crystal of salt............the Sabres don't leak info. At all.

It's him talking to other folks I would imagine. Adams' regime has less leaks than Regier's front office.

I don't know, maybe he really hears something, since he is next to the team. Although Buffalo's interest in Chych is nothing new.

Samuelsson - Dahlin
Power - Jokiharju
Chychrun - Lyubushkin

I would think Chych would play next to Power, at least until Joker is healthy.

Probably yes, although there is a sense of such a concept. Tampa played with Hedman, McDonagh and Sergachev on the same side and everyone had time. Colorado played Toews, Byram and Girard. We just have to distribute the balance of time for pairs.

The agent I could see. Lance is a beat reporter for the Sabres though, not some national guy. I doubt he's got a source within Arizona unless it's some sort of "friend who works there" scenario thing.

It could be confirming with someone like the Coyotes beat guys or someone like Marek or EF or Lebrun who are dialed in.

Thinking of future bottom 6 construction, Hoglander and Podkolzin both have been tumbled off to Vancouver's AHL team. Don't know if they could pry either one out but they both offer pursuit and physical engagement with a dollop of skill.

But nothing really since American Thanksgiving ? Perhaps the stove warms up after the holidays.

I agree likely source is agents feeding sources info to get price and interest up. We learned alot form the Eichel saga.

various sources have reported Sabres interest in Chychruyn, Fiala, and Robertson, was there anyone else they were "in" on from reports ?

Might just be using them as leverage seeing the Sabres have cap space, again to drive price/interest up.

Slaf seems to get lit up a lot.
He seems to have a severe lack of situational awareness from what I've seen of him. He has a nose for the net, but no clue where the opposing players are around him unless he's looking directly at them.

Well aware of contracts and that what we do one year impacts future years. Kind of like right now. We had the cap and the need for a top 4 dman two offseasons ago and we never got one. So right now we still have the cap space and the hole in the roster where one should be.

And isn't that what I just said? That we have room for one long term defenseman? Is there an echo in here?

Who knows, but Lance is usually reliable. Many different sources have already reported interest in Chychrun, it seems that this was reported back in the offseason.

There have been a lot of teams linked to Chychrun over the past year, but it always comes back to the asking price being too high.

The decision to buy or sell is certainly the canvas these GM's must paint upon. We repeatedly have seen a team fall apart for a half dozen games (the Penguins, the Blues, the Sens, the Flames), only to go on winning streak of about the same length. The Blues... win 3, lose 8, win 7... The Flames with two losing streaks over 5 games but went hard on payroll over the summer. Few teams have crashed so hard that they are out. Even Vancouver with the talk in the Vancouver press about almost everyone being available is still just 5 back with two games in hand on the Oilers for the 8th spot in the west.

The teams that look like pure sellers are Columbus, Anaheim, San Jose, Chicago, and Arizona. There isn't a whole lot there to pick through - it's like the clearance rack that has been long since picked over.
Another interesting piece to this is the asking price for guys.

EF was on the Jeff Marek Show today said that since there were a lot of D that went for a 1st or more last year that the ask for guys like Schenn and Edmundson is likely to start at a 1st.

I can understand if Adams is wary of shopping right now if those are the prices.

Yes, and we have assets for that. A player like Chychrun could easily take the pressure off Dahlin, Power and Samuelsson, could replace any of them in the top 4 in case of an injury, in terms of ice time. Dahlin and Samuelsson can't keep playing for 30 minutes, they already look tired.

I was responding to your statement that "Being up against the cap in 2025-2026 is not an excuse for being $25 million under the cap in 2022".

The fact that you're $25M under the cap in 2022 is an irrelavent data point. That's all I meant.

Krebs + Mitts + top 10 protected 1st is the very most I would give up. And that is more then fair for Arizona. Krebs value is probably still a late 1st and Mitts is likely a late 2nd in value.

I think the value of getting this core into the playoffs is very high, even if they don't get far. Need to start getting that experience to make it more real in their heads, and give them a real experience to set their future expectations against. Understanding what it really takes can help some players with taking the next step.

I don't think we get there without a few trades, but I do think a couple trades could get us there.

I would like to see 1 third line 2-way or heavy style defensive player, and TWO 4-6 capable genuine NHL dmen.

I would love the perfect trade for longterm dmen.... BUT to get to the post season this year I would be fine with moving a low draft pick and/or any of driftwood (Bryson, Fitz, Pilut, Hino, Olof, Aspland) to take on solid high cap dmen from Western Conference teams that will be UFA's. Don't buy big, buy its time to make some bottom roster adjustments to support the core.

Yes I realize its a "development year," but the opportunity is there and it seems to me the player assesments we needed to do are far enough along to identify the players that absolutely will not be part of the future. So there should be know impediment to improving the bottom group.
So Lawson Crouse and Chychrun from Arizona.😀

JEFF MAREK: I think Buffalo is still in contention for Arizona defenseman Jacob Chychrun.

LANCE LYSOWSKI: Several sources confirm Buffalo interest in Jacob Chychrun.
Was this a conversation between the two of them or separate tweets?

You need on of the two as a 3rd line centre. I am keeping Krebs.
I would offer some COMBINATION of Mitts,Joker,Portillo, draft picks, prospects not named Savoie or Kulich. See if they are interested in VO or Asplund.

In return for a combination of the above assets I would want Chychrun and Crouse.

Chychrun to play with Power and solidify the 2nd pairing and Crouse is a big physical winger that can score add grit and add a net front presence and leadership. He would fit nicely on the 3rd line with Krebs. Both players are 25 or younger and add size skill and grit to the group.

I like Podkolzin and Kuzmenko.

I’d give them the 1st this year (top 5 protection) for either one and Schenn, but they have to come with new contracts (depending of Podkolzin’s status). If Kuzmenko is the get, I’d eat half of Victor’s contract and do the 1st + him.
