Roster Thread (2023-2024 Season)

I guess we won’t know if the team was saved for awhile, but Zadorov just moved. So trades can happen. Remove the saved qualifier and the list of early season moves grows.

Agreed - making incremental roster improvements isn't something where they have to be finding a premiere player. Trying to improve in areas they are deficient need not be massive or expensive to make the team a bit better while they try to figure out how to solve things with the folks they've determined are currently important to the roster.

The Jumbo Joe to SJ deal happened on 11/30/2005.

The Bure to Florida trade happened on 1/17/1999.

Going back 18 & 25 years for examples is not exactly recent history.

:dunno:

C'mon now, 2005 was just went I got out of college. That was like, just...a few...not long...

God Damnit.

I think we're close enough to think about the lines when Quinn, Tuch and Greenway are back.

I think Girgs is long term?

Yeah, sounds like Girgensons is out for weeks. Thinking about it, something like...

Skinner-Thompson-Tuch
Benson-Mittelstadt-Peterka
Quinn-Cozens-Greenway
Robinson-Krebs-Okposo

Benson and Peterka have worked so well together lately, I wouldn't mind them continuing to ride that.

Trade vo and Joki plus pick for a D upgrade and we’re cookin

I'm fine with Vic moving. I'm torn on Henri - of their regular right-hand shot defensemen, he's been their best and has been better than he was last year.
keep Joker unless its a really big upgrade, maybe that injury hampered him quite a bit last season

I mean, while Joker is much better than last year....we are absolutely locked into a top 4 with Power/Dahlin.

Clifton is likely written in pen as a bottom pair RHD (at least on a good team)

With 28M committed on D next year already, where does Joker fit? He's not being used like a top 4 D.

We already have a bottom pair RHD.

Joker's TOI is down 20% this year. Is that the reason for the improvement?

I'm fine with keeping him...if we can find a taker for Clifton. Joker's QO next year is 2.5.

Are we comfortable spending 5.8M for two bottom pairing RHD?

Unless Power/Joker suddenly starts working a lot better, I simply don't see a fit.

Samuelsson-Dahlin
Power-XXXX
Johnson-Clifton

Is probably your D going forward.

I'm not sure how someone who is 4th in TOI on their defense is not being used as a top 4 D.

However, Power hasn't played well with him and Dahlin typically plays his offside.

I get it, he's 4th in TOI. Realistically, where does he slot into the top 4 D long term?

Individually, he's played well. Team wise, we haven't.

A good point and makes you hate the Clifton contract more

Is the issue this year with Power-Jokiharju due to Jokiharju or is it due to Power?

Which one has an unmovable 8 year contract (for now) and which is a RFA this summer?

Gotta fix what we can fix.
It’s not unmovable. No trade protection until the final two years. A cost certain former 1OA is most certainly movable. Not advocating he should, but the initial premise is not true.

The "fix" should be to bring in a better RHD like Matt Roy, slot Jokiharju down to 3rd pair and Clifton to 7th man. I don't want to hear about paying a 7th guy too much, because the 7th guy is going to play a lot. Keep running a D-corps at it's margins or actually be better??
Or move Power down until he realizes defense is his primary responsibility.

This guy has been so unfairly bashed this year... it's wild.

And I bitched about this signing in the summer.

It's weird to watch the mob form in real time and then it becomes an endorsement rally over time (on Twitter at least). Rosen, RJohnson both as prospects went from being pitchfork and torch territory to appreciated.

I do not understand what type of player you think is going to be available that will play better than Jokiharju is playing now that won't cost the farm, break the cap, will be willing to extend in Buffalo and that is still in their prime.

These types of players that this board covets do not exist. No one is trading Adams a RHD that is playing better than Joker unless they are way overpaid, long in the tooth, or on an expiring contract, in which case, likely won't re-up in Buffalo unless they are, (once again), way overpaid.

I mean, I don't hate your plans, but we need to be realistic here. Blaming Adams for not pulling off the impossible when this vision doesn't become a reality is dumb if it was never realistic to start.

We need a list of top 4 RHD that are available that are playing better than Joker is now, will fit in the cap going forward, are not entering the twilight of their career, can be around for the window and not regressing for 4-5 years, and will be willing to re-sign in Buffalo (if necessary).

I think that list probably looks something like this:
