Cap space as well. It's the entire issue with Adams. His drafts have been good, and his extensions appear to be working out (currently a large asterisk for Cozens).

Utilize your assets. The Sabres aren't strictly a "development team" anymore.
Asterik for Power too

Comrie is currently dead last in the league in goals saved above expected out of goalies who have played at least 7 game. (Comrie has played 7 games)

Comrie should probably not see action again until Levi and UPL really lay some stinkers or get injured.

and if Tokarski also stinks up the joint

Maybe. He's almost 2 years younger than Cozens, playing a more challenging position that typically requires a longer maturation period, and logging 23 minutes per game. The Sabres are asking a lot from him.

I think we'll look back when he's 25 and think he's on a bargain contract.
It's certainly too early to say for certain.. but I don't have as rosey an outlook as you.

But I've been wrong about 6'6 giants before.

I see a lot of early Hedman. He didn't look great for a couple seasons either. Don't think he will ever be as physical as Hedman, but speaking strictly of development curve.

You beat me to it. Was just about to post this ...

I see Power's ceiling as Hedman, another smooth-skating, giant lottery pick who developed fairly slowly. Strictly stat-watching, Hedman's D+2 season was 3G 23A, while our lad was 4G 31A.

(I'm putting down the blue-and-gold goggles now.)

I'd love to see some nastiness emerge in his game as he gets stronger and realizes what he's capable of physically, but it's probably just not in his nature. Maybe he will just be a better Bouwmeester, as some are predicting. I'll be content, if a bit disappointed, with that.

I am more in line with Bouwmeester. I hope I am wrong and probably am.

Yeah. I dont foresee that nastiness coming out of him anytime soon, and that's ok. He's going to be a menace because of his skating, size, and vision on the ice.

The contract comes with risk, but Im not all that concerned. A lot of his mistakes are mistakes a lot of young defenseman make...defensive zone mishaps when the pressure is on, getting bullied a bit physically, etc...

His size and vision are so enticing, though. I think some posters are worrying a bit too much about him. No one knows what he'll become, but Im honestly happy with the way he's developing. The growing pains will look ugly, but that comes with the territory of being an incredibly young defenseman playing big minutes in the show.

It's far far far too early to saw who Power will be. I think he will be fine.

However, I can say with confidence it was far too early in his career to give him that contract. A real unforced error

I'm glad Robinson is working out for us.

But such a marginal player being such an instant boost to the forwards makes Adams lack of moves or additions this offseason stick out all the more.

If a bonafide scrub like Robinson is this big of an upgrade, imagine what a bonafide middle 6er and bottom 6er could have done for the lineup if added during the offseason?

Tuch returns, making tonight's forward group, with some fine-tuning:

Skinner-Tage-Tuch
Benson-Mitts-Peterka
Murray-Cozens-Oly
Robinson-Krebs-Okposo

Greenway replaces Murray.
Quinn replaces Oly.
Girgs returns.
As the need arises, trade/waive Jost, Bryson, Comrie.

The 23-man roster becomes:

Skinner-Tage-Tuch
Benson-Mitts-Peterka
Greenway-Cozens-Quinn
Robinson-Krebs-Okposo
Oly, Girgs

Dahlin-Jokiharju
R Johnson-Power
Sammy-Clifton
EJ

UPL, Levi

That's a fine roster with everyone healthy.

Well time to revisit line combos:

Skinner Thompson Tuch
Quinn Cozens Peterka
Greenway Mitts Benson
RKO

I guess VO is missing a spot but someone will always be injured so in he will go somewhere.

Dahlin Samuelsson
Power RyJo
Clifton/EJ Joker

Team is starting to look much better on paper.

Skinner Mitts Peterka
Benson Tage Tuch
Greenway Cozens Quinn
Robinson Girgs Okposo

The last few games Granato has been putting Peterka with Skinner and Mitts whenever the team needs a jump-start so just roll with it. Peterka causes chaos with his speed, and Skinner just floats to a quiet place, should of had a couple yesterday but no puck luck. Thompson has been showing chemistry with Benson so keep them together

The bottom five

Not ranked: Buffalo Sabres — I really don’t have the heart to put them in the bottom five yet. And they bailed me out of having to think too hard about it by beating the Bruins this week, snapping a four-game losing streak. That was a good win. Let’s focus on that.

Because man, the rest of it hasn’t been good.

Sabres fans know the list by now. The goaltending hasn’t been great, with Devon Levi looking like a rookie with potential who may not be ready yet, and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen carrying the load before getting hurt. The defensive game isn’t where it needs to be. Nobody’s having any sort of offensive breakout, with no point-per-game players on a team that had three last year. Tage Thompson is back, but has looked frustratingly human. They’ve had injuries, not necessarily an outrageous amount but enough to throw off their mix a lot of nights.

Great. So, now what?

One option is they build on that Bruins win and climb back into the mix. This wasn’t a playoffs-or-bust sort of season for GM Kevyn Adams, but they had to be close, so that’s step one. But after losing to the Habs on Saturday, even in a game where they came back to earn a point, it’s hard to say there’s much momentum here. And the coming schedule isn’t great, with a pair against the surprisingly successful Arizona Coyotes on either side of the Knights and Avalanche. Then comes Columbus, followed by another tough stretch against the Leafs, Rangers and Bruins.

The Sabres have beaten a few good teams this year, including the Avs, Leafs and Rangers, so all is not lost. But it’s not especially hard to imagine the Sabres being all but out of the playoff mix by New Year’s. And if so, then what? The fan base loves Don Granato, and he was unquestionably a huge upgrade over the Ralph Krueger days, so if it’s not a coaching change then what do you fix? It’s a tough call. Let’s just say they earned that 10/10.

Sabres fans, let me hear you. Where are you at with this bunch? Is there still hope, or are we on to something else?

I don't think any of Boston, FL, or Toronto are teams that can't be beaten in the playoffs, but they are going to make it in. Buffalo has to beat out all of Det, TB, and Mon, and hope Ott doesn't make good on all their games in hand. It's too late.

This should have been a season to see where the team is at, and we see where they're at - not truly knowing what it takes to win and still having a lot to learn about that, beyond Xs and Os. Coaching has failed both tactically and with instilling urgency and intensity. The only interesting thing about this season anymore is just how much KA will do at the TDL.

He can't salvage a playoff run but there is still the potential to make team building moves with trades involving re-building teams that will give up on veteran players still in their prime. Will KA be willing to pay an elevated price to get the types of players they need to improve significantly, or follow the same "patient" path of internal improvement, with hope of modest UFA signings to fill in a spot here or there for a marginal improvement? We probably know the answer.

The bigger moves like coaching changes won't happen. I accept that, as much as I disagree. Even if they make the playoffs before Granato's contract ends, they won't win a round. He can't possibly prepare the core of this roster to be as intense as they will need to be they way the 1st rd typically goes.

They need to Rivet E. Johnson. I'd be taking a hard look at assigning Clifton to Rochester.

Even then, it'll take a 6 or 7 game winning streak to get them back in the hunt. It's not like they've been unlucky; they're right around what the possession stats say.
