The bottom five
Not ranked: Buffalo Sabres — I really don’t have the heart to put them in the bottom five yet. And they bailed me out of having to think too hard about it by
beating the Bruins this week, snapping a four-game losing streak. That was a good win. Let’s focus on that.
Because man, the rest of it hasn’t been good.
Sabres fans know the list by now. The goaltending hasn’t been great, with
Devon Levi looking like a rookie with potential who may not be ready yet, and
Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen carrying the load before getting hurt. The defensive game isn’t where it needs to be. Nobody’s having any sort of offensive breakout, with no point-per-game players on a team that had three last year.
Tage Thompson is back, but has looked frustratingly human. They’ve had injuries, not necessarily an outrageous amount but enough to throw off their mix a lot of nights.
Great. So, now what?
One option is they build on that Bruins win and climb back into the mix. This wasn’t a playoffs-or-bust sort of season for GM Kevyn Adams, but they had to be close, so that’s step one. But after losing to the Habs on Saturday, even in a game where they came back to earn a point, it’s hard to say there’s much momentum here. And the coming schedule isn’t great, with a pair against the surprisingly successful
Arizona Coyotes on either side of the Knights and Avalanche. Then comes Columbus, followed by another tough stretch against the Leafs, Rangers and Bruins.
The Sabres have beaten a few good teams this year, including the Avs, Leafs and Rangers, so all is not lost. But it’s not especially hard to imagine the Sabres being all but out of the playoff mix by New Year’s. And if so, then what? The fan base loves Don Granato, and he was unquestionably a huge upgrade over the Ralph Krueger days, so if it’s not a coaching change then what do you fix? It’s a tough call. Let’s just say
they earned that 10/10.
Sabres fans, let me hear you. Where are you at with this bunch? Is there still hope, or are we on to something else?
