It will be interesting to see if they try to bring in some vets, or just let the youth ride.

Lack of vets might hurt in the playoffs, but I’m pretty sure we have to get there first for that to matter.

I don’t think a 13/14 F or 7D will be an ELC player. The can just fill those roles with a vet or waiver player like Murray or Biro or one of the other Rochester players not exempt

i do expect Savoie, benson, Kulich, Rosen, Johnson on 24/25 team

It would be nice for Benson or Savoie to make the roster this year, and Johnson to get some serious call up time so that we don't have 5 fresh rookies on the team next year.

Which would be better than 4 this year? Uhm ok.

Benson and Levi make 2. Ryan Johnson as first call up...

I'm not a math whiz, but I'm not counting 4.
You also mentioned Savoie. Levi Benson Savoie Johnson…..I am no Math whiz either but I think that’s 4.

32Thoughts 32 Thoughts: Why Scheifele, Hellebuyck stayed with the Jets

9. In the not-too-distant future, Patrick Kane’s return is going to become a dominant NHL story. The video released by his agency (CAA) had its intended effect, and there’s a lot of interest. Kane will wait to see how teams start. Florida was very aggressive during the summer, but Buffalo will be the team to watch.

10. There was never any doubt Rasmus Dahlinwould extend with Buffalo. The bigger question was term. After Auston Matthews signed for four seasons, there was talk Dahlin would copy that plan, go shorter term and leave room for one more massive contract. The Sabres pushed hard for eight years from the beginning. Ultimately, Dahlin, very happy in Buffalo, agreed. It’s a win-win. I’ll bet on that contract aging very well.

11. Buffalo undoubtedly wanted to announce both Dahlin and Owen Power at the same time. Again, there’s nothing to worry about for Sabres fans, it will happen. But a recent push to try and get both done at once fell short.

So, this thread is a bit frustrating, in that there isn't a ton to speculate on. The needs are still the same that they were in the summer, and they showed minimal interest in fixing them. The only real obvious move is they'd probably move Olofsson for not alot. But after that...

1. They aren't going to get a goalie
2. They aren't going to add a two way forward (or any forward) unless there is a severe injury somewhere.
3. There seems to be little appetite for a core altering move.

Maybe take this season off.
Adams always takes the offseason off apparently.

It says something that neither of his signings made the weak top 4 of the Sabres. We also have the derped out goalies still here and that will cost us games. No mentor for Levi.

I'm still excited about the season but Sabres are still more about playing for fun than playing to win.

Really, really hoping Mitts is good to go for the opener. I'm incredibly intrigued by his linemates. I said earlier in the month that I'd flip Benson with Tuch putting Benson with Mitts instead of Tage. That could be an interesting shutdown line. Greenway was a monster on a shutdown line in Minnesota with Foligno & Eriksson. Obviously, Mitts and Benson are smaller, but I'm still intrigued to see if they mesh well with each other.

The only real lineup change I'd make is Jost for Olofsson, but who knows? Maybe Olofsson goes on a heater to start the season, then fades into the abyss once his scoring dries up. I just like that Jost brings energy and better two-way play than Vic. I believe he can be counted on to play a simple energy role on a line with Cozens and Peterka.

12. In the aftermath of the Board of Governors’ meeting, it appears the very-early, very-preliminary cap number for next season is $87.7M.

This was also interesting.

How?

Who are they all replacing?

You think Adams feels that way? He seems like a guy who's about as competitive as it gets. Granato must be furious with him then for providing a fun roster and not one "playing to win?"

Roster changes league-wide have been few and far between since UFA week.

Since my birthday (7/9) where you saw the DeBrincat to Detroit trade, there have been few trades involving NHLers.

The DeBrincat trade was the last trade in July.

August saw 3 trades involving NHLers: the Karlsson 3-way deal, then the follow on Petry to Detroit trade, and Boosh to the Ducks.

September had 1 trade involving an NHLer in the Pearson-DeSmith swap.

And October has had just the Lafferty to the Canucks deal as one involving an NHLer.

Due to the lack of cap space around the league, the trade market was constipated. So, expecting a high volume of moves was never going to be realistic given the market conditions league-wide.

Plus, most roster changes are done by mid-July every year.

The biggest step this team needs to take, is for the players we have to play better defense. That last preseason game with Levi just showed any team with a chip on their shoulder can still basically do what they want in our zone. Passes go right through us, puck battles are constantly lost at the worst times in the worst spots.

There's no magic offseason pickup that fixes this, and there was (rightfully so) zero chance of another offseason of massive roster turnover. The entire team, this team, top to bottom needs to be better. Better goaltending can alleviate it a little, and that's probably the only non-offseason move I'm a little upset about... but I'm not convinced any ol' goaltender can come in and work in this environment, or that the goaltenders we have can't work if the team plays better defense.

Clifton and E Johnson were fine bottom 3 D adds, knowing Dahlin, Sammy and Power are our top 3. I don't think there's a forward we could add that suddenly makes the team serviceable defensively. That's something that'll hopefully be addressed as the season goes on through coaching, practice and real time application. They are banking on internal growth, not just young guys growing up another year, but to whatever extent they can hammer defense into their heads as well.

I think it'll be a bit of a rough ride still to start the season though.

Jesus, even with Power and Mittelstadt extensions I don't see how they can spend anywhere close to that number. They still have a ton of cap space which is a nice feeling.
