Roster Thread (2023-2024 Season)

Every team in the league will be interested if Andersson is available. He has one of the best contracts in the league.

But Calgary only has two veteran D under contract next season, Andersson and Weager. So, the chance they will trade him is slim.

There probably is a potential trade there this summer, but it likely involves us shipping a d-men to them for one of their veteran forwards.
Depends if they go into rebuild or they just try to re-tool.

I feel like they might tear it all down and focusing on Calgary's rooster for next year is moot since it will be completely different.

We have one of the best prospect pools in the league so we can beat out other teams but it feels like Adams is in over his head trying to make that move.

I’ve run the numbers and you can 100% make it work.
What are the numbers? Hard to predict future contracts for young guys. For example most people on here were shipping UPL off in a trade or dumping him on waivers and now looks like he'll be worth 3M+

I just looked at it and we'd have roughly 10M-12M to sign Quinn/Peterka/Levi/RyJo. This also includes prospects taking roster spots. That's extremely tight. Any of the young guys breakout and we'd essentially be screwed.

Seems subjective.

I'd like to live in a world where we didn't give up a guy who amounts to a dollar for some veterans that are a quarter a piece.

My main prerogative now is finding room for a Mitts and Krebs extension. I don't see a future without them and the defensive core that is already locked down.

PDOcast did their annual pre-trade deadline mock trade suggestions and someone had one for Buffalo.

A 2025 1st protected that slides to 2026 unprotected, Krebs and Clifton for Rasmus Andersson.

I will drive them there myself.

I have a feeling Calgary fans won't be too thrilled to hear that proposal.

They can't even be courteous enough to offer the 2024 1st? That is just mean spirited.

Earlier in the year, I proposed on the main board Weegar+Coleman for Krebs+Kulich+Jokiharju+2nd, and it was generally thought of as a fair deal for both sides.

For Andersson alone, you're looking at Mitts++. I can't even imagine the cost of Andersson+Weegar (but I'd be all for it).
I honestly don't think Calgary would consider moving them for any price. which seems tio line up with all of the reporting from the local beat guys. You can keep dreaming but don't be too disappointed when Adams isn't even allowed to make a pitch for them.

And oh yesh, the players would have to agree to come here. There're just so many reasons why this isn't worth spending time thinking about.

Its interesting that one of the very few leaks out of Adams was about a player who said no to coming to Buffalo.

Its almost like it was staged.

There are plenty of players without movement clauses how come we don't hear about those failed acquisitions.

I agree with you.

I dont see them moving him unless a D comes back.

Even in a rebuild you still want vet D there.

Ignoring for the momrnthoe bad weager contract looks like for the last 4 yrs of it....

You are adding $11M for thr next 3 yrs. Going out would be probably 2+1+4=7 for the next 3 yrs. Net $4M gain against the cap.
Looking at 25/26
acquiring them the roster would be 6/5/0 for $65M.
Signing UPL and Levi for $6M. RyJo and vet D for 4M
6/7/2 $75M
Thrn you have Mitts. JPP, Quinn, and greenway to sign thrn fill out roster with ELCs (savoie, ostlund, 2 other F) or $1M per F.
If you give quinn, JPP 3.5M bridges , then greenway at $3.5M. If the cap was $91M youd be9/7/2 $85M. That 5F with about 5.5M left.

Looks like you need to trade another high salary player between Mitts/Tage/Cozens for futures.
The next summer you have rich and brnson to sign with clifton money and replace clifton with prospect.

Dont want to buy out players.

you need media to release these names. Adam's isnt. He can release things on his own players. Teams have asked about Mitts and he has confirmed that.

I find it stupid and naive on here when the think Afams isnt doing anything. takes 2 to tango.

he has been here for four goddamned years. At what point do you accept the 1 who doesn’t know how to tango is Kevyn Adams?

Yet he went into rebuild mode less than 3 yrs ago

He realizes the cap structure and looking ahead as nd saying I'm not giving this player more than X.

Why trades for the Buffalo Sabres are Hard:

1. Every GM has a list of players he is willing to move. The younger guys that we all want Adams to acquire are not on those lists and are not for sale.

2. Most of the players available are on expiring deals. Expiring deals do not make much sense for the Sabres, since there is a high chance they will not re-up in Buffalo. Those moves would mostly become a waste of assets.

3. The decent 27+ Vets with term that might be available for an overpay that we would actually like to see acquired all have some sort of trade protection and they all have Buffalo on their no trade list.

What is left are a.) guys on down years that would be risky reclamation projects, b.) guys with big red-flags that most other teams won't touch, c.) cap dumps that are grossly overpaid for what they bring, and d.) players that just frankly aren't that good and other teams are willing to move just to shake up their own rosters.

Now there is a good chance a GM with more respect around the league could better convince players to waive trade protections than the fairly awkward and goofy Kevyn Adams could, but anyone thinking that Buffalo should be able to easily attract players has not been paying attention for the past 20 years.

I hate that you’re right… But this is also why if I was the GM I’d be pretty reticent to trade my top drafted prospects as well. They are the only way we can get elite talent on the team reproducibility if we hit, otherwise buffaloes just not a big draw and the players that we want to get with those pieces just unavailable. Hard truths …

Not that Seattle has pulled in any big Whales yet, but I have more faith that they could because of being a bigger city that is still close to Canada, and having zero income tax in the state. Buffalo just doesn’t have stuff like that…

I only bring up the Kraken because I live here now and they are my second team that actually go to games to

I agree it's difficult, but that's no excuse for Adams. The fact that it's difficult is all the more reason to get it done when there are opportunities, and there have been opportunities. Good, top 4d without NTC's have been traded over the last couple of years (Hronek, Weegar, Chychrun, etc).

When the guys who can help us are available, you can't get cute and worry about "winning" the trade. We have the assets we need to acquire one of these players right now and still have a good forward corps and prospects afterwards. He just has to be willing to pay the price. Ideally it would have been last year when we had momentum and a chance to make the playoffs, but better late than never.

Sabres did not have a Matthew Tkachuk to offer up to get Weegar.

Price to acquire Chychrun was Kulich, Benson +. I am very glad that Adams failed to pull off that deal.

Hronek's cost was Benson. Hronek is a nice fit next to Quinn Hughes. How does he look on the Sabres when their is no forward support and his partner is defensively challenged Owner Power?

Not saying it would definitely be a bad move, but there is a chance that things actually worked out for the best missing out on that deal as well.

I feel pretty strongly that Benson will be the far superior player to Hronek when all the dust settles.
