Being interested in a soon to be 35 (?) year old defenseman is one thing. But to extend?! Come on now Kev

Laughton (overpriced), Jenner (not available), and Broberg are not great fits for what the Sabres need, IMO. Well, Jenner would be nice. But, it does not sound like Columbus is open to moving their captain right now.

I love articles like this where it's clear the writer does not follow the team. The issue of hitting isn't one just of player ability, it's lack of coaching commitment to it and we know this.

The rest is just 3C hard-ons that have lasted more than four hours days weeks years and then Broberg thrown in as some sort of unproven mild failure to be a PMD so Swedish Jokiharju.

I would like the time I spent on those articles back.

I still hope they don't qualify him. If they want him as a 7, that's fine, but you can't pay a 7 nearly $2 million.

Part of why I think he might be viewed as a depth rental somewhere if Buffalo is willing to eat some cap. The acquiring team pays some low price - 5th or 6th round type thing - and just uses him as a rental.

But they can not have an 8 who is making this much.

I had a dream about Moneyball and the Sabres. Everyone taking about grit and strength and this and that. And all we started to do was add guys that had better goals/60 than what we have in house. And we started winning games because our 4th liners were all scoring 17-22 goals a season each.

Maybe we should try it! Move on from Girgs/Ko/Krebs/VO and whoever else we can improve on!

Disagree on Broberg. I think he's a great fit. Big, skates really well, and probably settles in as a Tallinder-style defenseman. I've been on that train for a while.
No flame. Truth.
You're his dad, you can't comment.

I think this was Adams original plan -- and he's kind of intending to do that with the Girgs/Okposo/Krebs line, it just failed.

He also probably recently realized that the young prospects take longer to get the G/60 up over a long period of time consistently. And also realized that no one really ever succeeds in the playoffs without actual role players on the 4th line.

That strategy typically does not work in the NHL with a cap in place. Teams that have tried to run 4 scoring lines get destroyed in certain areas of the game and the results have been surprisingly poor.

You have to have role players that PK and do the dirty work to have success.

You need some physical players that will keep opponents from taking liberties with your skilled guys.

You need defensive players that can grind down opponents elite talent and limit their scoring.

Successful teams have a balanced lineup. Just think of Tampa Bay, they were very skilled, but to get over the hump, they brought in Maroon, Goodrow and Coleman(and grossly overpaid) to bring in those last two strictly for the intangibles they brought and to better balance their roster.

He gets on base....

I don't see Broberg being a great fit when he would be like the 5th best LHD in the system behind Dahlin, Power, Samuelsson, and RyJo. And that is the best case scenario.

This roster doesn't really show much in terms of planning. Its has simply been: Lets see what we have and Granato chiming in about players he hasn't coached since they were 16 to come in.

A plan would require there to be some desired end state of the team...and that would require roster shaping type moves. The closest we have seen in Greenway, and per Adams own admission, that was from Granato pounding the table advocating for him. Same with Clifton.

The kind of roster stagnation isn't evident of someone with a plan other than 'lets wait and see'.

Aren't we trying to build that type of depth?

Edmonton is looking for a prospect-prospect trade. But their close to the cap as well and could use some defensive depth.

Something like Broberg for Rosen, and Erik Johnson with 50% retained, with Edmonton throwing in a 4th or 5th?

They need guys who win their matchups. Just scoring goals doesn’t do it if they all hand it all back and more. And if the playoffs have taught us anything, being a team of all cream puffs does not win.
