I don't believe Dion Phaneuf to be an improvement on any of the Kings top 4 D. Worse than all of them. Maybe comparable to Ehrhoff but Erhoff is ridiculously cheaper. Phaneuf is one of the most overrated players in the game. You combine that will be a problem child at best off the ice it's hard pass on any deal involving him. I wouldn't even want him for free at half price. On a one year deal for 2 million? Maybe then as a bottom pairing guy I'd be ok with it, so long as Doughty, Brown, Carter, Kopitar keep him in his place off the ice.

That's why I don't feel like splitting hairs about his abilities. If it's an upgrade, it's a marginal one, and not worth shuffling everything else around for, never mind the alleged cuckoo nest that comes with him.

lol i finally come around to thinking the d needs a upgrade and you turn around and think that :laugh:well i still say we need that upgrade especially with Kopitar questionable *yeah i heard he was ok till he shows it i'm going with questionable.
I am not sold on McNabb in top six with drew babysitting him. I think we also need more physical play on that second pair that would be done with dion. I once read you (i think it was you correct me if i am wrong) call martinez on bottom pairing a luxury Well it maybe one but i think its a key to us winning a lot more games Again its Weal who has not shown alot imo and i still don't see it as much of a loss. We have at least one extra lw soon when King gets back also we have mersch ready to move up We can afford to move one for a upgrade which dion would be over CE or DF

I am overjoyed to finally have you see what i've been seeing in AA all along. Shore actually played ok last game imo He actually got a shot off and showed more offense with the more mins. However would get a upgrade in a heartbeat if the right deal come along Bozak at 50% comes to mind

Of course, that's how we work :P

But no, I'm with you that we could stand to upgrade that spot more than a 3C, but I just think it needs to be a bigger upgrade than a Dion type. That's why I've thrown out names like Shattenkirk. The question becomes do we have what it takes to land a guy like that without taking a major step back in other ways and the answer is likely no--which is why looking at the 3c spot is more relevant. However, I think that will be sorted out as guys grow throughout the year, I don't think Shore/Weal/Andreoff are going to get worse by any means.

i'd agree, but the other issue is TOI...
shore's had a ton of games already to improve
andreoff's played almost every game this season and about 20 last
weal's had about 12-14 minutes  so in terms of getting better they've got to play. practice alone won't do it, because comfort and chemistry are a factor. i just dont think the bottom 6 have gelled.

if the kings feel they can spare one of those guys or have no place in the line up then trade?? but for what? and in the long run - as new jersey found out - you have to keep bringing up the younger guys to keep the team evolving.

Muzzin, McNabb, Martinez are all over 20 min/game this year and every single one of them looks good doing it.

yep. personally the "D" looks fine to me. and then there's forbort too waiting in the wings. gravel down the road...no pun intended... etc. why are people worrried about "d"?

we need more players scoring, particularly from the bottom 6 - especially line 3!!! - that's what needs sorting imo

No thanks to Dion, that awful contact and hearing from leafs fans he isn't playing well.Promote thru the system or trade for a cheaper rental.Dion isn't worth what Leafs would want in return. If DL trades for Dion I feel he hasn't learn his lesson with another bad contract and selling the future in youth.Rather look at upgrading the third line center position for more scoring.

I think Dion has maturity issues. I don't think he is a leader.
I would however take him at 3.5 mill a year. He would excel as a number 3 dman

If the kings really are interested in Phaneuf, it's probably because he brings some physical toughness to an otherwise semi-soft defense. Without Greene and Regehr, there just isn't that big physical presence back there.

I'd have serious concerns about Phaneuf even at 50% retained. I'm sure being on a strong possession team as opposed to a Carlyle era Maple Leafs would help mitigate some of the glaring weaknesses in his game but I'm just not a fan at all and his contract runs until 20/21, we have too many of those already.

But the NHL has changed, so all we need is an aging, cross checking, laterally challenged against the cycle, overpaid cap hit (even on sale at half off), etc.... The Kings need to "develop" some D at the NHL level. For how much the Kings like to brag about developing players at the AHL level, they sure are timid about playing anyone!! Development stops at Sutter's desk!!!

It's still a big players game whether you like it or not, so, yes, there's still a need for a big physical dman.

As for kings developing D at an nhl level, they have done their share: Muzzin, Amart, Voynov to name a few. And guys like Forbort and maybe even Gravel knocking at the door, so, there have been plenty. You just want everyone developed through our system, and that's not going to happen with a team that's going to compete for the cup, year after year.

I know this is looking ahead but the team really needs a top4 RHD, a top6 winger (in the offseason) and a #3 Center. I don't know if the Kings will have enough money for Lucic this summer when Kopitar gets paid. I'm guessing Mersch will beat out King some time this year. I don't know if the Kings have the assets to trade for a top4 RHD unless one of Kempe or Zykov gets moved.

Gaborik--Kopitar--XXX
Pearson--Carter--Toffoli
Mersch--XXX--Brown
Clifford--Shore--Lewis

McNabb--Doughty
Muzzin--XXX
Forbort--Martinez
Greene

Quick
Bartosak

How do you fill those 3 missing pieces with little to no assets? What could they get for King and Weal? Do they think about moving Greene or Brown to get a better asset?

I have said this before this year. I think the Kings go completely opposite of years past and have a great regular season (like win the division) and falter in the playoffs (first round exit). They won't make a big splash this TDL because of the Sekera deal last year and it will end up hurting their chances. Just a strange feeling I have this year.

Hard to see Brown on the 3rd line with his contract, to me this is the biggest issue we have.

I don't see Barto being on the team next year for backup. I can see Dean giving another one yr deal to Enroth. Mersch will prob get a call up after new years, a little bit before TDL or if one of the LW get hurt. Currently i like how McNabb-Doughty and Muzzin-Marty have been playing during these past 9 games. I wouldn't break it up or change it unless something happens and it starts failing.

the two game road trip convinced me that

Lewis - the guy has heart and drive, but i'm tired of seeing him anywhere near Kopitar, or on LA.

Sutter keeps harping on Kopi making guys around him better. he also can't shoot the puck for Lewis. for years now Lewis has exhibited the inability to score, period. stop pairing him on the Kopitar line, when you are trying to get 11 and 12 going. they might as well skate minus a winger on that line in the O-zone.

personally im ready to see Lewis move on. great PK player and 3rd-4th liner, but he gets far to much TOI imo. i hope this summer Dean doesn't resign him, i can't take his stone hands any longer.

when Sutter keeps harping about the lack of scoring from the bottom six, its time to look at who has played in those spots the past few years. the players are fairly constant over time, so it is easy to see where the problem lies.

Clifford, Lewis, Nolan and King. personally i think its time to begin overhauling the bottom six. the introduction of AndyAndy and Shore are essentially the first change to the bottom six we have seen in 3 years. Dean needs to start moving some new blood into those lines, in the hopes they can produce some offense. he and Sutter keep going down the same road with the same guys, then complain about lack of production. its time to start changing

surprised by the Lewis hate, for what hes paid hes an incredibly useful player and Sutter loves him (deservedly so). not a lot of guys that can play either wing and center and kill penalties

I guarantee the moment Lewis is gone, he's missed. I get what Whiskey is saying about his utilization though.
