Also, the Kings were riding unsustainably high even strength shooting and save percentages last season. This season the shooting percentage is unsustainably low and the save percentage is much more realistic. All those things combined bode much better for the Kings than did the underlying numbers after the 6-game win streak last season.

I'm sold! But really, that's good to hear that the voodoo behind the scenes is pointing in the right direction (I'm not an advanced stats guy). After the first 3 games and the remarkably poor play by everyone on the roster, I was a bit concerned that the defense was more anemic than I thought. So it's nice to see that this likely isn't just smoke and mirrors.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not TRYING To trade anyone right now, I'm just saying that, for example, Mersch may make someone expendable (King?), Shore may make Weal expendable or vice-versa, and so on--i.e. we have the ability to plug minor holes.

I don't disagree with moving a few of those guys. I'm just not sure what you get for a package that includes those players. You never know..

King doesn't need to go anywhere. He was just behind Brown in scoring last year at 1/3 the cap hit. Lots of value and size for the money.

Ok who does go

right now lw
lucic
brown
pearson
clifford playing lw

king coming back mostly lw
mersch on elc ready to come up lw
future
kempe

To me mersch is cheap then King and needs a chance. King is a value trade piece imo and look how we have been doing without him Play him enough to show hes recovered then trade him

Did you just ignore the rest of my post(s)? You're preaching to the choir on King. I'm only pointing out that there is opportunity for movement at many roster spots and levels as opposed to what many thought before the season about spots being locked in and we have no assets for movement.

Many of us said that with the Voynov situation and Sekera walking, the Kings no longer had the luxury of keeping Muzzin and Doughty together. Thankfully, Muzzin was dropped to the second pairing pretty quickly

I'm impressed that not only did Muzzin moving happen so quickly, but that Sutter put McNabb up top. I never thought I'd see that, and I don't think anyone suggested it as a real possibility because we never thought it would stick!

I also think this is a huge reason doughty isn't standing out this year. I haven't seen him really try and carry the puck across the blue line but once or twice this year and Imo he's staying back to help mcnabb.

I've noticed it too. I don't think he wants to take any risks for now.

This. And of course Blake isn't going to say the Kings desperately need another D man. Might as well tell everyone we're more than happy to overpay. The lack of offense from the D is definitely hurting scoring chances. We'll all be miserable again when Toffoli cools off.

Didn't ignore the rest of your post, but lots of people are talking about getting rid of King, one of the better value forwards on the team. I didn't think you were suggesting that. Just don't get it.

We saw McNabb on the first pairing last year for a stint. I forget what the issue was, may have been Muzzin injured to start the year. With the Kings defensive system and Doughty I thought there's a good chance McNabb could hold things together well enough for the Kings to get by. It might not be pretty. Personally I'd like to see if Doughty could carry Schultz on the top pair. That might get him the Noris.

As to which winger to move when King gets back, it'll be easy to figure out. Look at who's putting up what sort of numbers and their cap hits. Adjust if they bring a special talent, like shootouts for Lewis. Reach a conclusion based on the numbers.

Then trade Brown. I kid... really he's going to start scoring any game now. It's almost more amusing that he isn't scoring. He's not playing badly. The scientist in me wants to study this phenomenon.

Or move King to center. :naughty:

Doughty is the type of guy that will attempt to carry the entire team on his back if the situation requires. Last year we didn't have a second pairing, so he 1) had to play 30 mins a night and 2) force the issue to score while he was on the ice, since our depth behind him sucked and were playing from behind more often than this year.

We look infinitely better this year than last year and Muzz-Amart has taken a lot of minutes and pressure off DD. I think he's down over 5 minutes a game. Last game was a great example- the Top 4 all played between 21 and 23 minutes. Hopefully DD doesn't wear down this year.

Trolfoli is a mad scientist/evil genius confirmed

And yeah re: Doughty, I agree with all of that, but I'd also add that Muzzin moving down is fantastic for him...slightly softer matchups that he can do more with, but he's also forced to focus on his defense even more, which we've seen him be elite at in spurts, but now that he's becoming an important part of the PK as well, he's really taking over the Mitchell role!

i have kinda been thinking about that. What would the lines look like when King does come back from his injury. I could see this maybe....

70-11-23
17-77-73
74-21-12
13-22-71(played really well at Frozen Fury) or 13-19-22
15 and 71/19 as extra forwards

I wonder if Forbort could successfully be paired with Doughty?

I think so, but how it would look while he's getting acclimated is a different story. Didn't they play together in Vegas? Forbort had a great game there. I do think Forbort can help out Ehrhoff or McBain more than McNabb could. So, I'd probably keep McNabb where he is with DD. I do think it's good DD is not with JM anymore.

I like the top three lines there. I think Brown, Gaborik and Pearson could all be sorta interchangeable (Brown can play LW with Gaborik on top line, Brown can play 3rd with Pearson and Gaborik on top line) .

But on to more important news. With the return of McBain, we may at some point in the future be entertained by the McPair. Should be interesting...then again, both are playing better than last season, which was truly entertaining: for fans of the opposing team.

Rather have him there than sitting as #7. Arguably could be in with Ehrhoff so McBain sits but when those two look good together and play RHD with LHD it just makes sense for now.

It's another one of those familiarity type decisions. Small sample size, but when paired with Ehrhoff (last I looked, Christian is top 2 defensemen in Corsi on our team), he killed it on possession. McBain is dead last by a long shot. I get it, though. I think this 100% guarantees we'll see Greene back in the lineup as soon as he's able. We'll see if the defense struggles or remains solid.

They could just be spreading the wealth a little bit too. It's a huge difference in pay for guys on a 2-way. Whoever is #7 isn't a huge deal, all three of Schultz, Forbort, and McBain are capable.

Hey, you leave Ryan Smyth out of this! He is just minding his own business counting his money from the safety of Edmonton.

As far as Greene, who will monitor this bad boy when it comes time to test Greene's lap around the rink for the skills competition.
