When he cashes a check...

I would guess Forbort getting sent down is a combination of him not having to clear waivers and management wanting him to play rather than sit. He is coming off an illness so who knows, maybe they'll waive McBain and bring Forbort back up once he gets a few games in? I honestly think McBain has earned the playing time and I'm sure that will change sooner than later.

I would much rather see Forbort playing in the NHL. Still, the team is hot with McBain in there so the move is understandable. Just how good is Greene in the room anyway? Team seems to have completely turned around in his absence.

Forbort played pretty well all things considered, but his game is extremely limited and his game limits how much he can play and who he can play with.

It's to the point where we were last year with Richards, where nothing tangible can be used so we are moving into the intangible argument with Greene. The same things were said last year "It'll mess with the room" , "You can't replace his leadership", and I'm not discounting leadership but you still have to be able to play at a certain level, and again just like with Richards last year, Greene is struggling to stay at that level on the ice.

Technically I don't think the Kings need to waive McBain if they send him down within 30 days. They can send him to Ontario without the waiver process since he cleared waivers after training camp.

Greene is very vocal. I met him off the ice and he is a nice guy. His teammates love him.

Kings lost a few popular guys over the years in Mitchell, Stoll and Williams...kinda need a few character guys like Greene around.

But even if he can't play effective hockey anymore?

The Kings are going to be right up against the cap again this summer, Greene is at this point a 6/7 d-man in the NHL, his ability on the ice warrants about at most a $1m cap hit.

Would you rather have Greene as the #6 or #7 at $2.5m or McBain as the #6/7 at $600k?

I personally think the extra $2m could come in pretty handy.

Logically and financially, I'd rather have McBain at $600k.

However, when sh** hits the fan, like when we go down 3 - 0 in a playoff series, we need a few vocal guys who have been there done that and can right the ship. Unfortunately, Brown, Kopi, Carter, and Quick are more of the lead by example types rather than being vocal.

Teams are so close now (parity), that the mentally tougher teams are really the ones who win. We've demonstrated we've got that. Sharks have demonstrated the opposite.

The question you are really asking, is what is the incremental $1.9 million dollars from Greene to McBain worth in terms of player performance vs sports psychology.

Since Stoll, Richards, Mitchell, Regehr, Williams have all departed, it bumps up the value of the "sports psychology" category in Greene's favor.

There is no "right" answer. Good debate though.

I think the Kings are loaded up front wit big physical guys such as Lucic, Nolan, Clifford and Andreoff but we are pretty soft on D with Mitchell, Scuderi, and Regehr leaving.

Doughty, Muzzin, Martinez, McBain, and Ehrhoff are all puck movers. McNabb is really the only physical D back there. Doughty and Muzzin throw the body, but they aren't physical forces really. So Greene is kinda needed especially in the playoffs. He is hard to play against. No team is scared to stand in front of Quick because of those top 5 guys.

If we put Green on waivers and he clears, wouldn't we get a reduction on his cap hit? And if so, could Green stay with the big club or would he have to play in the AHL for us to get the reduction in cap hit?

I ask this not because I want another team to claim Green (if any would at his cap hit), but it might make sense doing this transaction to get a saving on his cap hit and play him in limited number of games during the regular season because of his health issues. I agree with some of the other posters that Green's presence will be needed for the playoffs.

He would have to play in the AHL to get cap relief. The cap relief would be $900K. Not worth it.
I would guess with all the teams looking for D he would get claimed.

That's correct. But it's also cumulative. So, the clock so to speak does not start over each time you move guys up and down.

2 of our so called leaders were arrested this offseason after crap performances. We started 0 and 3 with Greene in the lineup and once he was out put up 6 straight wins.

All 3 of the guys aided in 2 cups and for that I will be forever grateful. Now it's time to move on and embrace the youth and exuberance of the Toffoli's and Doughty's. The team has had two nasty Stanely cup wins and came close on another. As a whole the team knows what to do and when to do it and still has veterans like Carter, Brown, Kopitar and Quick in the room to steer the ship in the right direction.

Greene is done and a liability on the ice. It is time to move on and get someone with mobility and a great first pass and positioning. 2.5 mill is to much for leadership that comes from a guy who's play can't back it up. I have been on both ball and hockey teams when we have had awesome leaders fall off later in their careers and yes they are in the room and they still say all the right stuff but because of their performance declines their voices become muted and life goes on. Time to move on and put money where it's needed more.

Forbort played pretty well all things considered, but his game is extremely limited and his game limits how much he can play and who he can play with.

He has been a very good penalty killer in the past. So I think he can provide help that way. It's just DS wants to ease him in.

I'm fine with Greene moving on.... One of the things that made this team hard to play against in a playoff series was a nasty/crushing defense. With Greene out McNabb is about the only guy left that attempts to destroy guys on a regular basis. If/When Greene goes the Kings need more nasty on the back end.
