Kopitar at 16 goals and 64 points last season are not worth 9 M.

His continued regression is accelerating to where is he on pace for
32 points. Abysmal beyond words, unless he has a broken wrist
and 1 or 2 knee braces. 7 points 0 PPG and 30 shots in 17 games? These
are bad 2nd line center numbers at best...and in a contract year?
Would be a huge mistake to give 9+ M and 7 years to a player
who may never score 50 points again.

Time to at least explore a trade.

I would like to say that A-Mart appears to have finally took the next step.

He has been nails since game one puck drop, and his minutes have been up since game one.

Good job A-Mart.

If he's going to get 9 plus I still stand by my opinion that if you can get a top 4 D and an above average 2nd line center it should be considered.

He just isn't a 9 million plus player as a second line center.

Kings could trade for or draft another center, move Carter to the number 1 center spot, and use that cash to re-sign Lucic, Toffoli, and add a d-man.

If Kopitar walks or is traded we have Carter, Shore, Andreoff, Weal and really no one in the minors except Dowd. So Kings will have to acquire Kopitars replacement in the deal or draft a center in the first round.

Just talking out loud but would Eric Staal be a option to replace kopitar? He would be a strong number 2 and make less then kopitar on a short term and give us time to draft a replacement and develop him

If the Kings are serious about trading Kopitar, you get a stop gap Center in the trade.

And you let Kempe continue to develop at Center in Ontario. Kempe is a better Center than he is a winger.

Kempe is the Kings future Top Center, in my opinion. Kempe already played few games at Center this season, looks real good so far.

E.Staal's UFA after this year and needs a new contract. I doubt he's going to cost say 3M less then Kopitar would, and he's probably going to sign for more then a couple years.

The issue with trading Kopitar is replacing him with a center good enough to help the Kings in the playoffs. There just aren't that many high end centers that are available. Then you have to look at costs. Just seems like a lot of work to trade Kopitar, bring in a new center that will be almost as expensive or go to the bargain bin and grab Bozak or something.

Maybe getting Kopitar away from Brown will help his game.

Hey malkins saying that the Pens players are mad at each other. Ya I know, something probably lost in translation but wouldn't he be stellar as our #1. Kopitar would be a beast behind Crosby in that division.

I am a we bit scared if Kopitars apparent decline in a major contract year. Saying that, scoring as a whole has really regressed in the league the last few years which makes it even harder for our forwards who play in a defensive structure. Maybe his play has stayed the same just the perameters around him have changes.

I think E Stall is looking for around 8M. so would rather have Kopitar at $9

Not doubting Friedman, this is probably accurate, but on NHL Radio last week the Powerplay had Nick Nickson on. According to what he heard, the sides were "a couple hundred thousand apart." and that he thought it would get done soon. I hope he's right, and for the group best benefit, it's close to 9m.

That's the key,'what he heard' which was from the Kings front office and colored that way. I'm sure Friedman's source was accurate as well, it doesn't mean either is wrong, just 'what they heard'
And I tend to lean to Friedman a bit because if the difference was 'a couple hundred thousand' the deal would have been done.
And it won't be 9M, if both parties are moving to a middle point, which would be well past 9M.

And that might be what Nickson is referring to, maybe Kopi's camp came below the 10M mark , to say 9.75 and the Kings are at maybe 9.2, but that doesn't mean they're close to a deal, esp since Kopi's agent seems adamant about what he feels should be the fair amount.

This is why you don’t hand out loyalty contracts to the likes of a 30-year old, 3rd line captain Dustin Brown. It skews the loyalty meter for the next “Team†guy.

Based on Brown’s contract alone, Kopitar deserves like 30-million a season.

If I remember browns contract was done after the 2012 cup run in which he produced. Completely different situation. Browns contract has nothing to do with Kopis current one, you can look no further than Chicago if you want to place blame somewhere.

Brown's deal was done whe nthe cap was predicted to go sky high, right after the sportsnet TV agreement. The thought was the cap would reach $90M in 5 years.

Since then the CDN dollar has tanked, and recession have meant the cap has been pretty stagnant. Had the cap gone up that high Brown's deal would be ok. Same with Kane and Toews.

well looking for and getting is two different things I think hes would resign for around 7 ish. If kopitar would resign for 9 he would have already been signed. I think if we re trading him hes going to be looking for around 10 a year. I think Staal at 7ish makes sense if kopitar wants 10.

I really think the contract negotiations are weighing heavy on Kopitar. We sit here and complain about the rich getting richer, but look at from Kopitar's perspective. He just had a kid, and he supports both of parents and I'm sure his brother as well, and he knows he hasn't been producing. And I'm sure the way negotiations are going, he is getting low-balled hard. All Anze wants is as much financial security for his family as possible, like any man would. Right now he's facing the fact that he could have to move out of LA to get that.

On top of that, he is playing the game right, but things aren't working for him. That weighs him down too. There is a lot on Kopi's mind right now.

I don't think Dean would ever let Kopitar leave, and I think once a contract is signed Kopitar's play will get better, that weight lifted from his shoulders.

And we shouldn't let Kopitar leave, he is far too important to this team. He is leader by his play, despite the point totals not being there right now.

Geez, when did a 29-year old become a kid? Kopitar is a grown man that should be secure in the knowledge that he is about to get a $50M+ pay day at a minimum.

I'm not so sure that anything is really weighing on him mentally other than his lack of performance up to his own and the Kings' standards. That might be bothering him.

Your ok with giving Kopi 9-10mil a year? He's on track for 35 points this season lol.

Kopitar is not worth a $9M+ AAV.

I don't think Kopi or any of his relatives are going to have to downgrade their lifestyles at all if he only got 60 million vs 90. I know that's a lot of money but I could not disagree more that his contract status has anything to do with his mental state.

Obamacare?

I'm okay with it for this year and for the next couple years. Kopitar is Mr. Consistent. At the end of the season he's gonna have around 20 goals and 60 points. If they structure the contract properly, the AAV doesn't have to be $10 million. There's just no way the Kings should lose Kopitar.

Less about downgrading lifestyle per say, but that difference in money can mean a lot in Los Angeles, but more about if Dean is really low balling him, he could have to move his entire family out of LA, and that's daunting. You all are already talking about moving Kopitar, you don't think that has crossed Dean's mind, especially especially after the Richards Fiasco. Kopitar has to know that his job as he knows it is at risk. And that is stressful. He is not guaranteed anything.

Kings already have Gab's at 5, Brown at almost 6, Carter at 5, Quick at 5, Doughty at 7, Muzzin and Martinez at 4. That's a lot of money. Almost 40 million in 7 players.

Now you need Kopitar at 9-10? Toffoli with a new deal in 1.5 seasons and Lucic a UFA?

Doughty's next contract isn't too far down the road either
