It's crazy because he was actually solid last season. Then boom, complete trainwreck this year.
The brute player went from the stand in a box and throw the puck around system into a skate your ass off into the play and skate in circles in your own zone following your guy system. It's not that complicated.

Not how this team plays at all.

Guhle sometimes unless you count flipping the puck 15ft in the as leading the rush
If you were confused why Beaulieu got minutes is because he's always there doing what every Nashville defender does. Hell, even Tennyson was when he was playing. Guhle too. Nelson sometimes. If Risto does, he isn't the leader, he's just chosen to hold onto it instead of passing to the headman. All these players just flub the opportunity, which is where it falls apart.

I know I’m being the crankiest old man ever... but the line changes are a team wide problem, the likes of which I HAVE NEVER EVER SEEN anywhere ever.

IF EVERY OTHER NHL TEAM HAS A 90% HUSTLE-OFF rate, with that 10% easy to justify in the big picture... what’s Buffalo’s?

Numbers are made up but point remains. That dopey, head down arm pump that makes it look like you’re gassed but maxing out on your way off the ice HAS TO STOP. Akin to that body shake you do when someone is holding a door for you at a distance - you try hard to make it look like you’re picking up your pace when in reality, you’re just gyrating like a fish out of water, making unnatural body movements and taking your time to get to the door.

Nobody skates off hard. It starts with the leaders and then trickles down.

Aside from the obvious manpower implications in a game predicated on speed and capitalizing on the minutiae, this is a shitty optic to the Nth. Cultural problems.

I must be in the same age class- it drives me nuts. That and overstaying one’s shift? What the bloody hell?!? Get your work done and get the f*** on to the next line.

Am I stupid to think signing Housley was going to help guys like Falk and Antipin progress into solid players because of Housley's playing background?

I feel duped.

Yep. And there’s a huge difference between a gamer shaking off a line change because he’s hungry, or the moment is huge and he wants it ... versus what we saw, which was usually a guy taking a 2:45 cool-down lap.

Long shifts are inexcusable for a team in the position that we were this calendar year. Totally agree. Drives me f***ing batty.

Not sure about Falk, but yes about Antipin. It shouldn’t be much of a stretch to believe that a coach can amplify a player’s skill set given they have had success coaching / playing that system.

Housley had success as a player and assistant coach playing a particular mobile, offensive-defenseman game. At the end of the day, it is more than probable to believe that Nashville’s D Corps are elite through and through, and that Housley is a product of that to some degree. Granted, it’s only been one year.

He's like 65th among 500+ minute forwards in 5on5 p/60. Better than literally any of our forwards since pre-tank.

Interesting... Although his numbers appeared to be significantly lifted by a hot February and the last 6 games with Casey to end the year. After his hot start and up until February his offense completely dried up, in fact many around here were calling for a demotion back to Rochester.

I will keep a closer eye on him moving forward, but I'm not comfortable projecting this small sample size out to an entire year until he proves he can sustain that type of production for 82 games. If he exceeds his development projection that certainly would be nice (and a welcome change compared to most of our prospect pool)

If the Sabres could move guys like Larsson/Girgensons/McCabe for similar guys but from better teams that might really help. Too bad there really is no market for any of them other than maybe McNabb.

Look at this list of UFA's for 2018 and think about who we could bring in just as bottom six guys but with speed and the right attitudes. (NOTE: Some guys have resigned/retired)

You're not the only person for thinking that. A lot of the fandom for the Sabres believed because he was a Sabres "all-star" that he would help our defense. A smaller portion actually thought that Housley would improve our team's defense because he was the Assistant coach for Nashville and their collection of high end quality defenseman. He probably had the best job with the best resources, and funny enough they probably had their best overall games this year without Phil since he joined and then left Nashville.

guys loafing around the dzone and not competing for pucks on the boards who then decide its time to play hockey when someone actually gets a breakout, shot goes wide and then the 'well shucks' skate back to the bench while the d gets blamed for misplaying a 2 on 1 that the other team had all the time in the world to set up because it takes twice as long to get the support players back on the ice, and then i tell myself that breaking the tv would just make me madder

Yeah, I doubt McNabb would've came close to the player he is today. You and Vegas can thank LA's coaching staff for developing him correctly.

I agree, he probably would have just been an older Jake McCabe if he stayed here.

We need more speed. Crazy how slow we are and or how slow we play.
I was at the Columbus game in Nashville game Saturday night and man are the Preds fast. They give no time. No space.

Look how Vegas put a team of no name players together and make the playoffs their first season. Learning from the Vegas style of players to fill out the bottom 6 is a necessity. ERod and Baptiste fill that style. Pu as well.
You just can carry the likes of Pomer and Larry. Okposo, ROR, Reinhart are no speed demons either.
