Roster/Rumors/Speculation/Trade Talk - 2025-26: Welcome to the Darche Side

Does anyone know for sure how it works at the draft when you're trading someone with a limited NTC? We talk about Barzal and Pelech, but in the unlikely event that they want to trade one of them for an upcoming pick, wouldn't they need to have an approved list before the draft so they know a team is on the player's list of acceptable destinations?

Players provide the list on July 1 - the start of the new contract year.

They can discuss with the agent at any time the player waiving the clause. Or ask a player to update his list. Contractually, the list is July 1. Otherwise, any team not on the list is fair game.

Again, this provides more insight into the Garrioch story of floating this out there so the player is already aware he may be traded and might want to start thinking about a new home, on the list (he has a say) or not on the list (has no say).

Thanks. So, if the Isles are to deal Barzal or Pelech at the draft (again, unlikely) it would need to be to a team on the list that the players provided, or they'd need to discuss the deal in advance and get the player's approval.

Correct. If a team is on their NT list, then they can be moved without any approval or prior discussion. If a GM gets called from a team not on the players list, the GM must call the players agent to discuss waiving their NTC for said team

The NT list consists of teams that player has identified he cannot be traded to without his consent.

The teams NOT on the list do not require any consent from the player. Rather, the team can trade the player without the player knowing.

Players can get cute with the teams on the list. For example, they can limit their available list even further by leaving teams that are cap stressed off, ie making it harder for them to acquire the player, absent other trades. So, a 22 NTC can almost be a 26 NTC on its face, absent the team making some moves, which is gamble, but a calculated one.

So, when people go, this team and that team are not on his list, that’s a stretch bc the player via his agent may have developed a specific strategy to limit the available teams and increase their control.

Runitbacklanders
Honestly the best option for this season by far. Bring back Lee and TDA on max 2 year deals (1 year would be ideal) and then let the contracts all fall off next summer without resigning any of them. Move out the veterans who you want to move out without replacing them with more aging veterans.

Goaltenders: Work on getting Gamzin over and have him split time with Sorokin so he learns the NHL and takes over the reigns when he’s ready to go and proves it.

Forwards: get rid of everyone by 2028 minus Barzal, Horvat, Holmstrom, Heineman and Ritchie. If you have to keep JGP for the 28-29 season, let him shift over to wing but still take faceoffs. See what you have in the system and who’s able to produce.

Defense: see what you can do with Pelech, Pulock and Mayfield next summer or the following one. Left side stays as Schaefer/Romanov/George. If anything, find someone who can compliment Schaefer.

2028:
Barzal-Horvat-???? (Eiserman?)
(Eklund?)???-Ritchie-Holmstrom
Heineman-JGP-???
???-??? (Ritchie)-???

Schaefer-????
Romanov-???
George-???

Sorokin
??? (Gamzin)

Feels like the Islanders are under the Lou cone of silence with nothing to report and no chatter. Is that a good thing or there are several changes in the works that need to be kept quiet.

We would think that there would be some chatter that would have leaked out.

My 2 cents is get rid of Cizikas if you can(or wait till he is a UFA and don't resign him) and use JGP on the 4th line. Yes that is an expensive 4th liner but as you see with Carolina rolling 4 strong lines is an advantage

Basically

Barzal-Horvat- Ritchie-Pageau with the option of Schenn replacing one of the top 3, or MacLean for 4th line backup

So instead, create an atmosphere where shitty play is tolerated. Good teams actually play to win games, not make everyone happy.

Buying out a 35yo who has ~$65m in career earnings with two Cups is cutthroat?

Who is this blogger? I want to know so I can avoid any and all of his p***y-ass "articles"
Tort’s comes in with 8 games left and takes Vegas to the finals lose’s in 6 and gets his walking papers two days later that’s a statement! We will do better.

That was just spitballing for after 2028. Ideally JGP shifts down to the 4th and does the heavy lifting with defensive zone faceoffs. Having quality pairs with complimentary third forwards is usually the winning recipe from what I’ve noticed over the years. It’s just the bigger picture for the future when Darche can fully take the reins after the Lou contingent is finally done with their contracts. I have a feeling once Junior is out of a contact, Senior will finally retire from hockey.
For next season, they could always have Cizikas-JGP-whoever as the 4th line and then Ritchie-Schenn-whoever as the 3rd. Ultimately splitting up Barzal and Horvat is the plan but those two seem to work well together and Horvat has been one of the few with enough of a brain to create space when Barzal goes to work. Plenty of options for next season with a new coach and a full summer of observations by the coaching staff. Even with a status quo roster and everyone healthy, they can easily fight for a playoff spot. Ultimately we have no idea what DeBoer will do with the forward group since it seemed like he was hands off for the last 4 games to get a sense of what he has to work with. Palmieri would have given this team another 20 goals which is more then enough last season to squeak out atleast 5 wins in games they either lost late or failed to come back in time. Honestly not as bad as people are making it seem overall.

I guess the main thing I'm getting at is that there is an extra hurdle to trying to trade Barzal or Pelech (or anyone with a partial NTC) at the draft. They're limited to the approved teams, or they have to work on the deal in advance if they need the player's approval.

Tort’s comes in with 8 games left and takes Vegas to the finals lose’s in 6 and gets his walking papers two days later that’s a statement! We will do better.
He was specifically hired to get Vegas to the playoffs and beyond. Cassidy was toast, they intended to hire Craig next season anyway, but didn’t feel it was fair to put Craig in the Torts situation as a rookie. Torts was a hired gun (and he was ok with it).

That is correct. So, back to floating the story via Garrioach was to gain interest in the player, generally, but also get the player to realize he’s on the block and he may want to think beyond his 10 approved as the team may come to him/agent on short notice during the draft weekend that he might be part of the deal, ie massaging this as a possibility ahead of time.

A ‘draft floor deal’ would most likely have been worked out in advance or is with a team the player has no control over.

My 2026 Isles Offseason - TRADE DOWN Version.
Alright, here is my complete blueprint for the 2026 offseason, where we trade down. The goal here was to keep this team competitive (into a heavy, playoff-ready roster) and continue to restock the pipeline with dynamic high-end talent.

I moved out underperforming contracts, traded down to add more picks, and landed a massive fish via sign-and-trade and free agency. Here is the breakdown -

The Trades
  • Anthony Duclair to Nashville for a 2026 5th Round Pick (No Retention): Duke still has great speed analytics and put up nearly 30 points in 60 games last year. Nashville has picks to burn and needs top-9 speed. Clear the $3.5M for 2 years completely off the books.
  • Maxim Shabanov to Calgary/Vancouver/St. Louis for a 2026 4th Round Pick: Swapping out depth for asset capital.
  • The Alex Tuch Blockbuster: Isles trade our own 5th-round pick to Buffalo for the exclusive rights to Alex Tuch. Right before free agency hits, they pull the loophole trigger on a massive 8-year, $84M sign-and-trade ($10.5M AAV). He’s a premier top-six power forward who anchors our top-six line and fits a strong forechecking identity.
  • Romanov: Isles ship Alexander Romanov to the San Jose Sharks. He has no trade protection, and to fit Tuch’s contract, a contract had to be moved out. Sharks have the 27th Overall Pick AND the 62nd Overall Pick (via Colorado) - really 61st since Vegas 2nd was forfeited. This gives Isles a 2nd AND another 1st.
  • The 13th Pick Trade Down: If Tynan Lawrence, Wyatt Cullen, or Daxon Rudolph do not fall to 13th, then maybe trading down is the best option. The Isles trade the 13th overall pick down to Pittsburgh. In return, the Pens give up Picks 22, 39, and 86 in the 2026 draft.
  • The Goalie Flip: Isles pack up that 86th pick from Pittsburgh and the 4th-round pick from the Shabanov deal and send them away to Montreal for Sam Montembeault to anchor our tandem. At some point, Montembault was considered the top goalie for Team Canada.
  • The Palat Dance Partner: Isles flip Ondrej Palat straight up for Ryan Graves ($4.5M AAV with 3 years left). Crucial detail: We wait until right after July 1st so Pittsburgh pays its signing bonus before the trade logs. He provides depth and can play both sides… he adds to the cap next season, but the cap goes up to 113 next season. It is probably better to just BUY PALAT OUT! but it sounds like that won't be the case. Having depth on the blueline is key, and they move out Romanov, then Isles will need some security. This all hinges on my belief that Graves is not totally cooked.

DRAFT DAY 2026
  • 22nd OA: Maddex Dagenais (C, QMJHL) — 6’4, C
    • Contemplated Gleb Pugachoyov, but went with the C. If Novotny somehow falls to 22 - I think I would pick him over Dagenais.
  • 27th OA: Preston Mathis (RW, WHL) — Dynamic, game-breaking speed.
  • 39th OA: Casey Murtryn (RW, NCAA) - Big Power F
    • Thought about Adam Goljer, RHD here too.
  • 62nd OA: Måns Gudmundsson (RHD, Sweden)
  • 109th OA: Tim Runtso (RHD, WHL)
  • 141st OA: Michael Berchild (LW, USHL/Denver)
    • Thought about Myles Brosnan, RHD - not against picking 3 RHD prospects in this draft.
  • 173rd OA: Brian McFadden (RHD)
  • 205th OA: Hudson Lohse (LHD) - personal connection.

FREE AGENCY
  • Anders Lee: Re-signed to a highly efficient 1-year, $1M contract heavily loaded with incentives (the Jamie Benn special).
  • John Carlson: Signed to a 3-year, $21M contract ($7M AAV). He wanted $20M total cash; they give it to him spread over 3 years. It's heavily front-loaded with no trade protection in the final year, making it incredibly movable down the line.

To Hamilton
  • Semyon Varlamov: Sent down to Hamilton (AHL). If he proves he's fully healthy, we showcase him for a deadline trade. He has not played a game in 2 seasons. They cannot go into the season relying on that.
  • Pierre Engvall: Wiped from the main roster to provide high-end, buried depth in the AHL.

That is some work there...do not know how you all do that. A lot of pieces to fall the right way for all that to happen, less the draft picks. Certainly would not complain if it happened that way though Lee at 1 year - 1 mil is not happening.

Why is that unlikely?

I do think the islander's will be active, and it will be filling RD. It's kind of odd that people think that they won't. The have one hell of a selling point.
For Trouba the main selling point will be a return to New York. If he wants a chance to win he'll look elsewhere.
