Speak for yourself I never wanted that to happen

Need Pager going the other way, for salary. Then the D is a huge strength again and I like our top 6. If we could find a cheap 3C elsewhere we’re cooking
I believe Tyce Thompson is a center. Clearly a precursor move to the Hanifin trade.

Something that concerns me is the performances out of Pulock and Mayfield. They haven't been the lockdown defensemen we've been expecting. Isles might have to double dip at the deadline but that cap space is going to be why they cannot do much. Bummer.

add pelech to this. i think pulock has been the better of the 3 personally. when any of them are out it hurts mostly due to the fact that we lack defensive depth and buldoc and aho are terrible.

The Isles miss a steady guy like Greene - that’s pretty apparent.
yes and playing a more conservative style

I like Hanifin and think he’d be an amazing fit here, but would that trade really move the needle for us all that much? I get that our defense has been shaky, but it seems to be due more to coaching rather than the players. Our healthy top six should not be a bad defensive group at all. Also, offense is still the greater issue IMO, and it has more to do with the players than coaching. We can’t continue to struggle to get 20 shots in a game and hope that we’re successful long term.

Lucky us we have them both locked up forever. I really don’t like the way any of Pulock, Mayfield, or Pelech have played this season.

Yep Greene was perfect for that 3rd pairing and good on the PK, a calming presence as well. Some of these guys look like they have a grenade on their sticks.

Not sure how they'd fit him.
Posted this on the main board but it has to be Romanov going the other way. Replaces Zadorov and keeps us from dropping another first. Bolduc goes with him and Aho/Reilly stay in the 6/7 roles until George is ready, which could be as soon as next season based off of this year's training camp. Add a 5th or something if you need to. Hanifin looking for 50M and 8 x 6.25 would be doable with a Lee buyout in the offseason, which would also make us better.

What if they land Hanifin and then move Romanov for Pinto. Lean on those 5 D and give Reilly or Aho 14-15 minutes a game.

Re: the Romanov trade talk, Hanifin would upgrade our top 4, but then we'd have an issue on the bottom pair and especially with depth in case of injuries (Aho on the bottom pair sounds fine, until one of the LHD ahead of him gets hurt and he's playing top 4 minutes). Romanov at $2.5M this year and next is acceptable cap-wise even on the bottom pair. In his time with the Isles he's had tough stretches when asked to play top pair minutes, but I think he's been very good when right around 20 minutes a night.

However, if the Isles could send JGP as part of a deal for Hanifin and then send Romanov in a deal for Pinto? Even as a Romanov fan I might have to think about that.

Who plays 3c and on the PK for the next 20 games? Ishkakov? And why is JGP waiving his trade protection to go to a bad team in the middle of nowhere? And why is Calgary taking on his salary? We would be adding picks... again.

I do agree that it makes more sense for our #5 to be on the left side rather than the right (Mayfield) due to Pelech's injuries, but unfortunately the cap has not been allocated in that way. Hanifin is a big enough upgrade on Romanov and if it only costs him + Bolduc or Wahlstrom who both suck, what's the issue?

Martinek, Viz, Zidlicky, Boychuk, Seidenberg, Greene - these guys really standout to me as a solid lower pairing guy who was 35+ years old but could still give the Isles valuable minutes.

This is one of my biggest gripes regarding the offseason. We could clamor all we wanted for a younger PMD, but those aren't super easy to come by. But you would've thought Lou could've pulled a veteran D man to stabilize the back-end mixed with the youth.

I look at a guy like Hamonic.

Here is an interesting idea -

An all-in trade
Hanifin (@50%) and Lindholm (@50%)
for
Romanov, 2024 1st, Wahlstrom, Bolduc, and 2025 2nd

This is a similar risk to the Horvat trade - no trade is coming with an extension.
The isles would have the Cap space to fit both since they will accrue cap space by the deadline.

Hell, these could even be two different moves, one happening NOW -
Romanov for Hanifin (@ 50%) Romanov has another season on his contract AND will be an RFA after that... not sure how much of that closes the GAP - maybe Isles add Bolduc.

Using the Horvat trade as a template -
2024 1st, Wahlstrom, and 2025 2nd to secure Lindholm at 50%. This would have to be closer to the trade deadline because the Isles again will have cap space at the deadline.

They could even add Parise and waive Fasching.

Forward group -
Barzal Horvat Lindholm
Engvall Nelson Palmieri
Parise Pageau Holmstrom
Lee Cizikas Clutterbuck
Hanifin and Dobson
Pelech and Pulock
Reilly and Mayfield
*Aho, Martin, and Gauthier as extras.
Sorokin and Varlamov in net.

In the offseason or during the season they have the opportunity to resign Hanifin and possibly Lindholm, it would make it a busy offseason for Lou to try and shed salary and cap - Possibly moving Palmieri, Pageau, and even Nelson to recoup picks and assets, but cross that bridge

I don't think the Islanders accrue cap space anymore because they're using LTIR, right?

They will once Pelech returns to the lineup.

And we don't know when that'll be so we won't know how much they'll accrue. Do you know how much we'll need to make a deal like that actually happen?
