He was given the same treatment last season pre-injury. Kept being forced onto Mat’s wing when he couldn’t even keep up or keep track of his linemates. At this point, staple him to JGP until he proves he’s deserving of a promotion.

I have went back and forth on Pageau's tenure here due to the above. It seems as if Pageau ALWAYS gets stuck with the following:

1.) struggling vet
2.) rookie
3.) player who has nowhere else to go in the lineup

It feels as if we should just plug Fasching/Holmstrom/Gauthier on that line to make a true third line and see what they've got. That would make more sense than throwing Wahlstrom on the line.

Honestly, at this point just play 2 of Maggio/Dufour/Gauthier/Fasching/Holmstrom and let Wally fly off into the Bellows/MDC stratosphere.

Sometimes players just need a change. Maybe he will be able to put it all together elsewhere.

I also think that this is the type of player many fans would like for Lou to go after. An undervalued, recent prospect with high-end offensive upside.
Yeah, I get that, except most of these hope and dreams types wash out most of the time. There’s very few Verhaghe (sp) stories, but they make people ‘think’ there are way more.

Yeah I agree I don’t think Wahlstrom has the snuff and is starting to develop into bottom six guy (not someone the Islanders need). He’ll succeed once he ends up on a team in need of some youth in their bottom six.

His shot is good enough to survive in the NHL, but he’s not the right fit for My New York Islanders.

I’d rather see Fasching, Gauthier, or even Iskhakov in his role.

It's easy to be disappointed in Wahlstrom so far because we tend to have unrealistic expectations of guys drafted in the first round (10-15 range in his case, albeit in a weak-ish draft) and had him mentally penciled into the top 6. But stepping back from our hopes and dreams, he's 6'2", 200+ lbs, doesn't seem to mind physical play and has a hard shot and good release. So if top 6 doesn't pan out he could still become a 15-20 goal 3rd line RW who gets some time on the 2nd PP unit. No reason to give up on him quite yet, especially considering his age and coming off a serious injury.

Well put DC.

But, he obviously doesn’t trust Wahlstrom right now - moving Barzal and Cal into that spot over the course of multiple games.

And to be fair to him - he is coming back from a major injury and this is his 3rd NHL game back - hoping it is more out of sync and pace. Coaching staff maybe trying to get him his reps, but I would like to see him sit a game o two and then try again.

Hoping that we see Parise sign in the next couple of weeks so he can bring some security to that 3rd line and stop the juggling.

I'd rather see some guy from the AHL because of why not reasons.

Id give Ishakov a shot. He seems to be playong very well in the ahl. Cant be any worse than Wahlstrom.
I am hoping he continues to keep producing - I think we’d been all begging for more skill in this lineup and I hope he gets his shot soon just to see if we have some answers from within the organization.

I give Wahlstrom a little more latitude to see if he produces. He is doing the little things out there and generating shots (just missing most of them). He's reading zone entries a little better, putting himself in a shooting position. Bottom line, if he doesn't start producing, he needs to see less ice time or the press box. This is a results driven business. And yeah, a change of scenery may be in the cards. Could see a rebuilding team take a flyer on him.

And at less than a million in salary.

Too much logic in one post... you'll break the internet.

I agree, AND I think that Wahlstrom attempting to play a 4th line style will get him injured again very quickly - it plays against his instincts, and imo he's bad at it. It's too bad that unlike in baseball there's no rehab in the minors, because that's really what he needs. His best bet is to fit with the first line.

I really like what he did on PP2 the other night except for the fact that he was on the wrong side of the ice. He was moving the puck decisively and taking shots when he was supposed to.

Without him, the second PP unit would be as dangerous as a bunch of us out there.

Just missing most of his shots has been Wahlstrom's M.O. since he got here. That and hitting the goalie square in the chest when he is alone in the left circle on the power play.

The issue is that he still hasn't proven to be that bottom 6 guy and this team is trying to win now. How long do they wait to see if he could be a contributor on the bottom 6? If this was a rebuilding/retooling team then you can afford a bit more patience. I'm not sure this team has that kind of time.

15-20 goals easily puts you on the first line on this team. :)

Yeah, but the guy picked right next to him on the same team in a harder position is outplaying him by a mile. So, the expectations are little bit justified with a clear comparable.

He’s in survival mode of trying to secure a NHL future on the bottom six. Maybe he gets 10Gs in that role. He’s here bc he’s cheap, young, cost-controlled, and may provide offense.

He either gets flipped in a trade as the ‘1st rounder’ or solidifies a spot in the bottom six. The issue is people will continue to harp on his ‘shot’ as a reason to be moved around the lineup in hope of getting him started.

IMO, I think Lou moves on from him in a larger trade at some point this season.
