So, I guess as of now we still have Barzal at wing as the plan? My recollection (maybe faulty) is that Lou didn't seem to be convinced of that in the "availability" after the season ended. We'll see.

IMO, they should move Nelson to LW with Maty at C and Wahlstrom on his RW. Have Horvat C a line with Engvall and Palmieri and Pageau with Holmstrom and Lee. Good balance.

Maybe better to just make him a defenseman, play him like Paul Coffey.

The isles are paying Barzal as the 22nd highest paid forward in the league and he doesn’t even have a bonafide position? Absolutely absurd.

hope you enjoyed your summer brother. Let's see how the season unfolds before I'll claim if he is earning his paycheck. LGI

Isn't it funny how so many talked about wanting to emulate the Wings from their Cup years and 'over-marinate' our prospects and now that we are doing it (even if not on purpose), their patience runs out when they are confronted with it?
Of course, it never occurs to them that over-ripening was just the issue of Detroit's core being good enough that none of those AHL-ers could dislodge a starter.

Good points. Or food for thought, anyhow.

It would be great to see someone force their way into the lineup . . . I just can't think of when it last happened with us. Maybe Beau making the jump quickly? Dobson was not a surprise.

Uhhhh, Hudson Fasching???

Was thinking more about Top 6F/ Top 4D

Maggio's article by Rosner was interesting. This is pretty much the first rookie camp I remember with so many interesting storylines to see unfold. Dufour said he spent the summer on his skating and Maggio mentioned lifting weights all summer. Didn't really hear anything about Holmstrom. And the quiet around Wally is a little disconcerting.

Wally was training with Drago out in Siberia. I do like the cockiness with Maggio. Reminds me of #13 alittle

Then I expect Wally to be in great shape and prepared to lecture Putin on how we can all get along!

Just gotta hope Maggio can have a year similar to Dufour's last season. 48 points is really quite respectable.

Mind us, Andreoff and Terry are gone. Fritz "should" pick up some slack, but the other vets are Bardreau, Pinho, and Kubiak - all 20-30 point guys. Koivula certainly SHOULD be a 50-point player, and may now get the respective top 6 spot to do just that.

In other words, it might be hard for Dufour, Iskhakov, and Maggio to produce. The onus is already on them.

Yes, I like MacLean, I think Newkirk is ready to be a real AHL guy this time around, and - based on the contract situation - Holmstrom prolly starts on the farm (where he'd hopefully clip at just under a PPG pace), but the rest of the forward group consists of some combination of Pivonka, Kuefler, and outside pieces, Piercey, Cipollone, and Calder.

Anyone playing has to be very defensively sound and someone needs to show some offensive inclinations.

Didn't really hear anything about Holmstrom. And the quiet around Wally is a little disconcerting.

I agree. Far too quiet.

They were already far too hush hush about his actual injury.

Then the 1-year deal at those terms. No other news, really. Feels like there's some stuff internally that is playing a bigger role than we've been given any inkling about.

and he did play on the top 6 in a system that just said screw defense.

If you want me to be honest, I want Maggio and Dufour to stay in the minors until further notice. Wahlstrom will get his final shot now.

I fail to see what the point of have training camp is if the young prospects have a 0% chance of making the team over a player who has never scored over 15 goals in a season before. I'm not saying I think Wahlstrom is going to be terrible but if Dufour/Maggio look the part they need to infuse some of this young talent in the team.

The fact of the matter if that Lou's top forward prospects of Durandeau, Maggio, Ishakov, and Dufour is going to make or break whether or not this team has to enter a rebuild.

Why do you think any of the young players will get a roster spot though? I would love to see all of those four but unless the 4th line goes down, or Pageau (god forbid) is injured, none of them are gonna see the light of day this season.

I figured out why Lou signed Gauthier. He's got speed and plays a bit like Zeeker. I think for faster teams, they'll pull Martin and put in Gauthier. He's also good depth.
I think at worst he plays on the top line as a decoy. He's a bottom 6 dude, but that also adds versatility.

any chance the smurf Ishakov turns heads in camp and gets a look opening night? Kid certainly has the skills
The last i read from a scout/journalist? is that he started out strong then withered as the season went on confirming his size is just too much of a detriment in a league that plays lots of games. Scout says he really has to put on a lot of muscle to have a chance, and even then a slim one.

I wouldnt be surprised if he turns into an everyday player come December. The addition of Engvall and now Gauthier really help the lack of speed up front. I would like to see a 4th line of Gauthier-Cizikas-Fasching moving forward. I love what Martin and Clutter have done for us, but father time catches up to all.

Palmieri has 2 years left on his deal so in my mind thats 2 years for maggio to bake in the ahl then hopefully be an in house replacement . Durandeau showed he can play at the NHL level so he's probably the first call up

Bolduc is very good with his potential. IMO he should be running the powerplay soon.
I like his heavy shot that we've seen a few glimpses of . He's not really going out of his way to be the shooter while on offense but if something pops up he'll take that shot .
