And the Islanders power play ranked 30th last year.
Tatsr scored only 4 PP pts total in 132 minutes of PP time. That's only 1 pt better than Bailey who played only 88 min and we all agree was terrible on the PP last season. His points scoring rate per 60 min of PP would've been 11th (2nd worst) on the Islanders for skaters who played at least 50 min there, with Tito's 0 PP pts being the only Islander to fare worse than him. In fact, Tatar's PP scoring rate was so low that Fasching had the same pts/60 at 5v5. Tatar's PP scoring has also been on a steady decline for each of the past 3 seasons straight in terms of both total points and pts/60.

I'd still be fine with adding him as he is still a good 5v5 player (except in the playoffs, so we would likely want to upgrade on him at some point in season). But even with how bad our PP was, if he was this bad on NJ's PP, thinking he'd be any kind of improvement on ours is unrealistic at best. He would need a massive bounce back for that to happen and at his age and with his decline on the PP, I just don't see it happening. I'd rather see one of the younger players like Wahlstrom or Gauthier get a chance there than him.

Tatar doesn’t shoot as much as he used to on the power play. Whether that’s a function of how the Devils power play is designed or not is up for debate. His 5 v 5 scoring would place him 5th on the Islanders last year. Tatar is experienced on better power plays than ours. With that in mind there’s no reason he shouldn’t be brought into camp on a PTO to see what he can do for us.

I already said I'd be interested in him for his 5v5 play. That said, it is worth noting that his 5v5 play was almost exclusively centered by an 80+ point player and in a more offensive system, which he likely won't have on the Islanders, so I wouldn't expect him to repeat the same numbers here. But I do still think he'd be a good add at 5v5, at least for the regular season.

I just think any hope that he might help save the PP is wishful thinking based mostly on hope and a desire for change. Palmieri is the same age as him, historically has been a better PP producer, and was the better PP producer last year by a decent margin. But I don't see anyone arguing Palms might bounce back and be someone that could help the PP improve.

Also, I don't think he would sign a PTO. I could be wrong but I'm guessing there are offers on the able for him to sign a contract, they just aren't the deals he wants, so he is waiting for something more along what he wants comes along.

What this team lacks (and has been lacking for a while) is high-end, offensive skill. The poor PP is a direct result of that. The vast majority of our forwards are "middle 6" and Tomas f***ing Tatar would not move the needle much.

At this point, the best bet is to see if Horvat & Barzal can rekindle the chemistry they had before Barzal got injured.

too lazy to look it up, but who will be the PP coach to try and fix that mess?
Most likely it will be MacLean again, as he was not replaced this summer and to my knowledge he was running it last season. Not really happy about that, to be honest, as last year was a pretty obvious fail in that regard, and I'm a bit surprised we didn't bring in someone new. But I do also get the arguments many have made on here that it's a lack of skill among the players and not squarely on the coaching.

At 31st overall, it can only get better? Right? :help:
