All signs point to JG going to PHI, except does he really want to play for Torts and more importantly for the GM who is an idiot and for the team which is a mess? If he signs there it will be more about going back home and hanging with friends and less about winning. So in that case I wouldn't have wanted him anyway.
then he's a moron for choosing philly

Unless his arrogance tells him he can ride in on his patented "Johnny Hockey" trademark moniker and be the franchise rescue

Maybe he wants his own classic savior bumper sticker a la
"Only Jesus saves more than Bernie"

To be honest if he goes to the Rangers I won't care because I think it's a terrible asset management move for the team given their strength at the wings and probably the biggest problem is needing another center.

How far is Long Island to NJ and Philly by car. Would you consider it being close enough to family?
Depends where you are on Long Island and Jersey.

If you go from Elmont ( where Belmont is and on LI/queens boarder) to Elizebeth NJ it can take as little as 40min.

Belmont to Philly is about 110 miles away. You can do it in about 2 hours over night or about 2:30-3:30 HRs depending on traffic.

I don't know how the hell the Rangers are in the running for Kadri, Gaudreau or any high FA. They are in cap hell, how are they staying under the cap?

Wouldn't want Kane on the Isles due to the off-ice issues, but that's a pretty good deal for what he brings to the table. Not convinced Johnny G is worth twice what Kane is worth, but that's probably the going rate.

If Isles do not get any big-name UFA forward tomorrow and if rumor of Patrick Kane requesting trade is true and Hawks willing to retain salary or get Bailey + prospect in return, you go all in for it. He is Barzal's idol and will be a great mentor for him. You will need to jump in before any other team gets him.

There is no comparison. Calgary was a Cup contender this season and was not going to trade Gaudreau under any circumstances. In 2017-18 the Islanders were below .500 and didn't sniff the playoffs. JT was a perfect trade deadline roster building asset for the Islanders, but he told them not to trade him.
Exactly! Totally different scenario and I would also add that Tavares actually hit free agency whereas Gaudreau never did.

Don't want to be a stickler but you made it sound like NJ and Philly were both the "hometown" teams as if it's a distance thing. I do believe Gaudreau lives or was born real close to Philly but in terms of "close to home" the Devils aren't really that different then the 2 NY teams
This is always fascinating to me. As someone that moved away from the tri state area I learned to embrace Northern Jersey as basically a suburb of NYC, which is basically what it is. The distance may be a little shorter but culturally speaking it's not all that different. Instead of Taylor Ham on a roll he'd be eating a ham egg and cheese sandwich for breakfast.😄

Gaudreau is going to the Flyers. When his agent says "family decision" it just screams Philly to me.
I will be surprised if he doesn’t go back to Philly. Would be nice as LI is about as close as you can get, but I get the feeling the hometown boy is going home. Don’t many of the Flyers live over in Cherry Hill area of NJ? That used to be the case, as I remember.

I don't think it's all so simple, and I don't think which east coast team is marginally closer to home will make a huge difference.

How JG feels about torts will be huge. A hockey family like his will have some notion of who Lambert is. The devils is all about asset allocation. They sign someone for 10M, they're as top heavy as any team, with questions at D and G.

Will NYI go 11+? I don't think so, and that's why I don't see them signing gaudreau. But I think they could.
