What package would you be comfortable with.
Obviously Pageau would be included; he'll most likely want to come back, but what's the other pieces?
I'd much rather move Debrincat to the island than to Detroit.

These are not the type of players we should be wasting salary on. They are no better than Engvall, we might as well keep him. Right now we should be looking for upgrades or if not, then just keeping our guys. Upgrades would be a winger or top 4 dman deserving of 5+ million per year.
Thanks for responding. My view was possible replacements IF Pageau was moved, Parise retires, or Engvall starts to push for 4 million or something. Totally agree about upgrades about a winger or dman, but post was strictly bottom 6 after some chips fall.

I was hoping Clutter would have been moved for a late pick for cap and roster flexibility. Appreciate him and his heart, but his body is breaking down.

If Debrincat is willing to extend with the Isles (and I have my doubts based on his list), maybe something like JGP, Wahlstrom and a lottery-protected first (at least top-three protection) for Debrincat and Erik Brännström (a pending RFA also)?

Maybe the Isles add conditional fourth piece depending on getting to the ECF or such? Like a third if they get to the ECF, a second if they get to the SCF and a first if they win the Cup.

Ideally it would be better to get back a RHD3, but I believe Aho can play his offhand too?

I would roll a defense of:

Pelech-Dobson
Erik Brännström-Pulock
Romanov-Aho
Bolduc or Salo in reserve

That is three defense pairings who should each be able to handle 17-18 minutes a night and you can double shift a few to close out a win.

After being able to clear Bailey's entire cap hit, I think it would be a huge mistake to make signing all the same guys back the priority. The only reason we are acting like we are still tight is because we are assuming signings of every one of our free agents, but almost 10 million in cap space is a good chunk and we should be using that for flexibility now. The only sure things should be signing Wahlstrom (probably 1.5-2 million), Varly (if it is 2.5 million or less) and Parise (if he will again accept the league minimum). Mayfield and Engvall should now be backup plans. We should be seeing if we can spend that additional 5-6 million on upgrades for top 6 winger or middle pairing dman. If upgrades are not possible THEN you go back to Mayfield and Engvall.

If it comes to that, then I am okay giving Engvall 4 million. There is no way in hell unless there is no other better option that we should be giving Mayfield anything more than 4 million. This idea that he will get 5 million or more in free agency is insane. Teams are winning the cup all the time with bottom pairing dmen making 2-3 million. We do not need a 5 million dollar #5 dman. I would much rather give 5-6 million to Dumba or Orlov.
An overpaid 3rd pairing seems right up Lou’s alley though, doesn't it?

Bertuzzi-Horvat-Barzal
Engvall-Nelson-Palmieri
Lee-Pageau-Wahlstrom
MM-CC-CC
Fasching, Johnston

Debrincat is younger and better, but Bertuzzi would only cost a bad contract. So that might be the better option so we can keep Wahlstrom/picks.

But if we're going that route, I'd rather look at UFA Tarasenko.

Tarasenko is a RW, both Bertuzzi and DeBrincat are LWs. Not sure if that matters to NYI, just pointing that out.

EDM might need to clear more cap space, would Cody Ceci (6’2”, 210 lbs right shot D w/ 3.25M per for the next two seasons) be a fit if NYI decides to let Mayfield walk?

Personally, I’d prefer to replace Mayfield with a defenseman capable of playing QB’ing the top PP but that might not be able to happen.

Ceci has no trade protection, so there’s no hurdle for NYI to acquire him and because EDM needs cap space the cost to NYI may be something as little as Johnston. Two years and under 4M per is a reasonable and low risk commitment.

Just a thought…

Loves those Isles clicks, I tell ya.
I mean, it’s not really a stretch to say that NYI “kicked the tires” on a right shot top six forward who can both finish and pass at high speeds, especially from the left side of the ice.

That’s like the exact player that Barzal probably needs to get to the next level, just based on how he used to look with Eberle.

Doesn't Debrincat need to be qualified at $9m? Then is a UFA at the end of the year? That seems like a crazy thing to take on.

With Baileys cap hit off the books
Varlamov at 2.5
Mayfield at 4
Engvall at 4
Wahlstrom QO .875
Johnston buried

Isles will be under 83.5 at 22 man roster

Going back with the same exact roster would be a massive mistake. Signing Engvall to anything more than 2.5 and it will turn into a contract they cannot get rid of.

Mayfield at 4 is meh. I would rather use the 4 from Mayfield and the 4 from Engvall to bring in an $8 million dollar player.

Would this $8 million dollar player play offense and defense at the same time?

No. You can however go and sign Dumba or Orlov let's say... Then after that you can allow for training camp to battle between Durandeau, Dufour, Maggio, etc.

Continuing to sign middling players to mid level deals is not really a path to the Cup at this point. What exactly is the upside in Engvall at $4 million? Does he give this team a 50 point season? I would say no. So at that point he is just another 40-45 point player at best which this team has a ton of already.

That is true. Right side is a bit packed if Barzal is kept there and Wahlstrom isn't traded.

Bertuzzi may be the best option here. Sign him, Varly and a RHD, and the roster looks pretty set aside from a Parise decision.

Bertuzzi - Horvat - Barzal
Lee - Nelson - Wahlstrom
Parise/Holmstrom - JGP - Palmieri
Martin - Cizikas - Fasching

Pelech - Pulock
Romanov - Dobson
Aho/Bolduc - RHD

Sorokin / Varly

Not bad, but the lack of speed is concerning.

I’d love Dumba
