And we don't have the cap space and he's small. I want to get a defenseman like Pesce because this team has missed such a player. Debrincat would be fine, but we'd have to sacrifice Pageau (big loss), another 1st, and maybe another prospect in an already thin system.

This is a bad player. I do not want a guy who is a career minus player at all, because he isn't gonna help anything at all. Powerplay starts and ends on defense. We need to fix that defense.
I wouldn't necessarily say you are wrong, but I would not judge him by his +/-.

IMO, moving Nelson to Maty's wing makes the top line a formidable one.

Leaving, Horvat to anchor the 2nd line with Anders Lee... I think what would compliment that line would be someone with speed, skill, and craftiness. DeBrincat would be awesome, but like many have mentioned I do not believe they have the assets to grab him.

My eyes go to Connor Garland, who would be an excellent choice. Vancouver could possibly eat some $ and we all know a move for him would not cost much, in fact, the Isles may even receive an asset to grab him. The buyout window just opened up and I wonder if we see the Canucks buy him out.
Top 9 -
Nelson - Barzal - Palmieri
Lee - Horvat - Garland
Holmstrom - Pageau - Wahlstrom

If Parise does not come back another player the Isles should target would be Max Pacioretty, who may prefer to stay on the east coast and could possibly sign for an incentive-laden contract. Another former captain, he would be someone who could fit the locker room style. Blake Wheeler is another player, if he is bought out could be a complimentary player to Barzal on his RW.

As for D - very little on free agent market to be excited about.
Mayfield resigns or they make a trade.
Signing Ryan Graves would make them younger, but it does block Sam Bolduc in a season if they feel he would be ready to make the jump.

The Isles could grab Myers for 1 season and not resign Mayfield and maybe address the blueline with a better free agent class next off season.

Bailey and Johnston for Garland and Myers and Vancouver tosses in a prospect or picks.

I agree we need to upgrade Defense. But the idea that anyone here thinks we can afford Pesce isn't thinking straight. Carolina is only dealing him if they can't sign him. He's making almost 5M now. If he's not resigning with Carolina, what the heck you think he's asking for. We can't pay another D-man 6-7M per year. We have 2 already, have to sign Dobson to a big deal oh and let's not forget Sorokin please.

Psss- by the way, our offense still sucks

My crazy scenario for the day -

Isles trade R. Johnston for C. Garland and 2023 Leafs 3rd round pick.
Isles trade J. Bailey and 2024 2nd to Arizona or Chicago
Isles swap 3rd rounders with the Leafs and get their own 3rd rounder back from 2024.
Isles move Palmieri in another salary cap dump
deal -

Isles sign Lafreniere to 4.3 AAV - 2024 1st and 3rd to the Rangers.

Keep smoking, dude....

Can play this game all day. I am stunned we are at the point where we are saying "WE NEED ELITE TALENT! NOT AT GOALIE!" If Lou trades Sorokin this offseason for prospects and draft picks 95% of this board is going to flip. The only two reasons to trade Sorokin are the following:

1.) he will not sign
2.) he wants such an enormous contract it does not make sense

Tampa had Vasilevsky, Kings had Quick, Caps had Holtby, Pens had MAF, Wings had Osgood, etc.

It is absolutely ridiculous to sit here and continue to say this team is too old, too slow, and not good and then I see many of you say TRADE SOROKIN, TRADE DOBSON, TRADE EVERYONE.

This team is going to go through growing pains if they get younger.

Gosh...

No one is saying trade Sorokin (well unless 1 of those 2 things you mentioned above comes to fruition), so let's not put the spotlight there. Sorokin is a top 5 goalie in the world right now in his prime and if you can build around him...You 100% do that.

The real issue is this...Even with having a top-5 goalie in his prime the Islanders barely made the playoffs. And unless Lou magically improves this lineup in the next month it's going to be the same next season.

Whether it is Ovechkin, Crosby, McDavid, or anyone else...One elite talent can only take you so far. You usually need more, and the Isles roster outside of goalie is entirely average (and aging). And given how Lou has painted this team in a corner given the lack of cap space and assets to trade, I don't see how he's going to significantly add to this team to make them the kind of roster that can reach the final 4 (or better) again.*

*I know...I know...We shouldn't talk now. Let's ignore his past work and see how Lou does this offseason.

Why would you want Lafreniere? And give up a first to get him?
Because he is a talented young player with the pedigree to be star in this league.
His struggles have everything to do with being blocked by Panarin and Kreider and not getting the PP time he would need to develop into that star.

Supposedly Vancouver wants to get rid of Garland and will need to attach assets. What about a Bailey for Garland swap with either VAN retaining a small amount or giving a pick?

Garland is 5 years younger and more productive but has a few more years left on his deal.

I don’t have the biggest hard on for Garland but I think if it meant moving Bailey without giving up any assets + I think Garland would be easier to move if we had to I would do it.

Don’t see it,and no way I give up a first for him rangers would never trade him here anyway

Has he been that bad? I feel like I’d take him on a cheap one year prove it deal behind Pelech and Romanov. He can’t be worse than Aho…
I would take a flier on him as well, he was one of the best PP guys in the league in his day. IIRC his list when he got traded was literally only Boston and Vancouver, so I wonder what it looks like now.

I would too!! Wtf they’re trying to clear money I guess. He’s got a pedigree. Would definitely prefer him over Aho

Is the concern over hacking it over a long playoff run size related? Because that's completely fair, but anything else is just questioning his compete level which I never think is fair.

Career playoffs 9 GP 2G 4A 6P +4

I also understand the issue with the term he will be looking for, that puts the Isles in a bind. But, how does a consistent goal scorer - being a sniper and big time powerplay threat - add little value to the compete window? That is something that is sorely lacking from this team and we've been screaming it from the rooftops. Why are we turning our nose up at players who fit the Isles biggest need that are available?

Also, who gives a hoot about the rebuild window now? We'll get there when we get there.
There’s a high likelihood a player of his stature can and will wear down in a long playoff series.

My issue with the compete window, is that if he’s gonna wear down, be the sole focus of the other teams defense, then he’s not gonna earn $8M and also not gonna help the Isles go deeper into the playoffs. Fancy regular stats? Sure, the rest, putting a dissenting view on that.

Sometimes the stars align and teams get easier paths to the SC (hello COL) but don’t think he fares well against any of the final 4 teams this year.

Like it until Laf with too high an aav and too high of a draft pick for him. I just don't see him having the all around game to play a third line, but not talented enough for the first two lines. He reminds me of Schrempf and Tambelini

The more I think about it the more I’m liking the idea of Getting Garland. Been reading a lot out of Vancouver that it’s the team and management that has Misused him.
I watched him a lot in Arizona and have advocated for him. He can skate, has some finishing ability and would be useful in OT. He certainly had a poor season in Van and sometimes reminds me of a rhd Beau. Maybe he would flourish in a new environment.

I should have said the 1st and 3rd - is an offersheet 4.3 contract costs a 1st and a 3rd.

I couldn't agree more - I would say more consistent than Beau.

Offersheet.
