Wow, I was expecting Fasching to come in around $900k-$1 mil. To get him at league minimum for two years is an incredibly great deal. I’d gladly take him in our bottom six, as a fourth line he’d be great.

Alright, to our resident prospect scouts. What are we realistically looking at with Maggio?
Watched two games in Bridgeport but he’s very skilled, good skater and showed a pretty wicked wrist shot. I will also say this cause it was only two games but he back checks, he seemed like a really well rounded defensive forward. I’ve read he probably was a late second rounder or early third rounder on ability but missed whole season due to Covid in 20-21 which caused him to slip through cracks probably. He led OHL in scoring this year and I don’t care what anyone says that’s an impressive accomplishment

What’d he say?
He said a lot of right things, talked about growing up as person with the things he’s been exposed to thus far and the veteran players like Chara and Parise helping the younger players grow. He also talked about his game and his physical play and kinda how it’s evolved and him Wanting to be an aggressive physical player.

The team needs to be able to play more than one way. The Isles' dynasty team was famous for being able to beat teams any way they wanted to play. This team has one route to victory, and it's too hard to win consistently playing their style, IMO. The team needs to play faster. Skating. Puck-moving.

I mean how can you compare that dynasty team to the roster that snow/Lou assembled? Who on the 23-24 Islanders is going to the Hall of Fame?

Matthew Maggio, come get the Stanley Cup.

Ralph Macchio, come get the Stanley Cup.

Having Fasching back is good. He busted his ass to get that deal. I guess he took the guaranteed money of a two year one-way deal rather than take his chances elsewhere. Good on him and good on the Isles.

Strong hockey sense and a nose for the net. Deceptive shot. Knows how to use opposition Dmen as a screen.

Short stint in BPort already saw him successfully trying moves and hopping around opponents. Seems to be very confident.

I've mentioned it in the past, but I see the guy as a slightly bigger Brendan Gallagher type when the dust settles.

Teams don’t generally fire GMs after making the playoffs 4/5 years
This is very true. And I don't believe for one second that Ledecky/Malkin would do that. However, apparently Lou signed a 5 year contract. Not sure if that is accurate but assuming that, I can see both parties agreeing that now may be a good time to move on.

That's a big endorsement. Before the injuries took their toll, he was a very good player who not only scored a bunch, but drew a ton of penalties.

Here's the easy part. Who I definitely don't want to see back: Mayfield (his weakness is NYI's weakness - don't commit to it), Clutterbuck & Martin (it's time), and Parise (it's time to sell). I would retain & move Bailey if possible, but wouldn't buy him out. If you can't deal him, I'd prefer burying him than have the short-term caps savings (and penalty the next offseason).

I'm unsure about Engvall- it depends on his salary demands. I wouldn't mind him as a middle-6 LW, and I don't think NYI have a lot of better options especially if they are able to move Bailey. Unlike Mayfield whose weakness (zone exits) is NYI's weakness, zone exits is Engvall's strength. Gonna say it again, really strikes me that Engvall might have been a better defenseman than forward.

I said in another thread, but I'll say it here: I think NYI are going to have to deal a major tradeable asset to make a significant stride. Those include Nelson, Pelech, Pulock, Dobson, and Sorokin. The Jets are potential partners.

No one really knows because Lou's contract status is more guarded than the White House.

The best is speculation that he is on a 5-year deal because Trotz was on a 5-year deal. But it hasn't been confirmed publicly.

So true, but none of that matters. Malkin got rid of snow when he had a lifetime contract, so if Malkin wants to fire Lou he could in a second.

Lou is in his 80s. He's done some good things here and legitimized the franchise again after it being bottom of the barrel for a long time. That being said this entire organization needs a new voice and philosophy for winning. We are a roster that is going to be a fringe WC team and teams like Buffalo, Ottawa and Detroit are only getting better, while we are getting older. It is going to be wise to get the most we can for aging players while we can. We also should not be trading another first round pick for a very long time. We have nothing in the system. Losing in 6 to a team missing two big pieces should be a wake up call.

The firing of Snow was such a mistake, as evidenced by the cup contenders he’s built since leaving here.
Snow is one of many former Isles GMs who built contenders elsewhere.

Glad to see Fasching get rewarded. He earned it. Guys not gonna be on the scoreboard much but his hustle will grind teams down and he'll get his line chances. Expect him to carve out a Cizikas-light career.
Which also means he's probably going to be a penalty killer. We need help

I do not fear the Senators or Sabres until they have goaltending. This team needs help in a few aspects, but Dmitri Orlov is priority #1. Regardlessly we need that player, we need a puck mover, and I would gladly see him in the Visnovsky role.

What you mentioned above , some sort of larger deal is needed. To me, Lee's got to be moved only because we can't afford his slowness but another piece (Barzal) has to be considered only because his style doesn't fit their makeup. I would hate for this move to happen but if there was something that could be had to improve the overall team, we need to look at it. The other side is, if you can add to the Barzal team makeup using the above except for Sorokin, you do it. This team needs to get a little less grittier and a whole lot more skilled
