I've mentioned it in the past, but I see the guy as a slightly bigger Brendan Gallagher type when the dust settles.
That's a big endorsement. Before the injuries took their toll, he was a very good player who not only scored a bunch, but drew a ton of penalties.
Here's the easy part. Who I definitely don't want to see back: Mayfield (his weakness is NYI's weakness - don't commit to it), Clutterbuck & Martin (it's time), and Parise (it's time to sell). I would retain & move Bailey if possible, but wouldn't buy him out. If you can't deal him, I'd prefer burying him than have the short-term caps savings (and penalty the next offseason).
I'm unsure about Engvall- it depends on his salary demands. I wouldn't mind him as a middle-6 LW, and I don't think NYI have a lot of better options especially if they are able to move Bailey. Unlike Mayfield whose weakness (zone exits) is NYI's weakness, zone exits is Engvall's strength. Gonna say it again, really strikes me that Engvall might have been a better defenseman than forward.
I said in another thread, but I'll say it here: I think NYI are going to have to deal a major tradeable asset to make a significant stride. Those include Nelson, Pelech, Pulock, Dobson, and Sorokin. The Jets are potential partners.
