“The big fish, from an Islanders perspective, has already been caught. When the club acquired Bo Horvat from Vancouver early last week, it took itself out of the running for other high-end, elite players that may be available via the trade market.

So those of you hoping to plug the Sharks’Timo Meier on the left wing with Horvat and Mathew Barzal, or see Arizona’s Jakob Chychrun as the new defense partner for Noah Dobson, well, those chances are pretty much dead.”

Isles will/would likely pick up a depth guy like a Nicholas Paul for Tampa who chips in some timely goals. Perhaps Barbashev would be a good fit.
Because the insiders really have a good handle on what LL is thinking and doing in the background....

People really need to take a good, long look at Capfriendly and realise the situation the Isles are in. As pointed out above, they CANNOT take on another big contract until they have gotten rid of at least two big earners this summer. Even if the cap is going up a bit it doesn't solve much for the Isles.

Signing Hovat ate the Islanders cap space up. I still expect Lou to try and sign both Mayfield and Varly to new deals and with that there is nothing left to spend to seriously upgrade the roster.
Moving Bailey will be hard, and will come at a price. And it sure as hell won't happen now at the deadline but the draft at the earliest, if at all.

It's fun to dream of the likes of Meier or Chychrun, but it simply won't happen until Lou can clear space.
I hear all the cap considerations, but the counter to that is that a team like TBL always seem to find something to fit the players they want under the cap, whether it's trading out middling players with picks attached or magically inventing an injury, they seem to do it. if we CAN add someone like Meier, this opens up a fairly significant window of potential for this team and it is something it would do, if i could. If it takes moving bailey with some picks and CAL to IR and moving on from Mayfield then I still do it.

Also, it's only really a 2 year problem as the cap is going to rise significantly after that. Lets be more creative and get something done.

As per capfriendly the have 7 mill in capspace assuming cap only goes up a mill. Unloading bailey 5 mil is a must which gets them to 12ish. Figure 7 mil for a backup goalie and possibly Mayfield and theres 5 mil to work with. Fitting in another semi large contract isnt impossible.

The economy is turning into massive garbage dump quite quickly. Don't assume that the cap will go up. The league is frantically figuring out ways to maximise profits to a point where they've pissed a lot of fans off. A business doesn't do this unless there's something to be desperate about.

I would not count on more than maybe one slight move up of 5-10m then stop there or increase by 1m until about 2030. We're in for a really shitty few years ahead where the average fan won't be able to buy tickets let alone merch or pay for TV subscriptions.

We still have to sign Sorokin and Dobson. We need to just unload and stay that way for a few years so we can manage.

Some really, really smart fellas here. Maybe you should be managing my portfolio instead, or I should have studied macroeconomics and finance better as opposed to focusing on bong hits for breakfast back 20 something years ago. The Tampa's of the world are not as smart. Just win. Not my money. LGI

Meier imo puts this team over the top and makes them a legit contender for many years to come. If you can do it you do it. Flip Varly for a 1st let Schneider back up the rest of the way and use that 1st with a guy like Dufour as the main pieces. If a 2nd or 3rd rd needs to be added you do it. Isles will still have a 1st and 2nd left over the next 2 years and a few good prospects. The window gives you time to draft again in 2-3 years and let them develop before the window starts to close. It can be done
I think other people will be able to offer better packages but I agree we’d be cooking with serious gas if we added Meier.

Horvat-Barzal-Meier would be a lethal first line.

There's going to have to be a tear down eventually at this point. Might as well go scorched earth and really go for it while these guys are in their prime.

Lou stated he has no plans to rebuild for a long time. Lou is going for it, he's not trading Vary or Mayfield for good or bad. He's going to ride out this team the rest of the year.

It's hard to get a bead on what the league's priorities are at this point, tbh. They seem intent on making decisions that fly in the face of helping the league. The TV deal seems to be a mistake. Things have become more granular for the NHL when the other major sports leagues are becoming more national. Honestly, they were always the 4th league at the feed trough, and now they seem to be falling even further behind.

What does $5 million get you these days? Another Palmieri, Pageau or Bailey, sure but no game changers.

The 7 million in cap space for next season will be given to Mayfield and Varlamov so there goes all the space. Burying or LTIRing Clutterbuck doesn't move the needle much. They still have to sign his replacement, be it Fasching or somebody else at league minimum.

The Islanders need to move at least $11 million out to sign a top notch UFA or trade for the likes of Meier. And since they haven't got a plethora of picks and prospects to play with they'll have to trade away what they've got in order to offload said Bailey and Player X WITHOUT taking any salary back. Not gonna happen is it?

Trading for Meier? What could the Sharks really need from our roster? Not much. It'll have to be something along the lines of Nelson + Wahlstrom + 1st rounder, which is a terrific haul but the Isles need to move Nelson to open space for Meier.

Crazy? Yup. But I imagine it'll have to be along those lines.

The last stand.

The core 4 if you will is Barzal Horvat Dobson and Sorokin.

Pelech is like the Bernie Williams of the core 4. The 5th member

Lee Nelson Palmieri Bailey these are the last ride for these guys the next couple of years.

You gotta balance winning now though without mortgage the future. I don’t mind the trades as long as we get a long term player like Horvat out of it. We even signed Pageau and Palmieri which made the trades acceptable. At some point though you need to accumulate Draft capital to replenish the ranks and/or use as assets.

Rags traded away first round picks for years chasing the cup for Hank and they have nothing to to show for it

Not to get too off topic, but since it's related to the cap and that impacts the roster...

I applaud them for being willing to jump into the streaming aspect of things, but it's just too disjointed right now and definitely leads to what you're talking about. People don't know where the games are being aired, is it on ESPN+, is it on Hulu, is it on TNT, is it an ESPN+ exclusive? It requires checking in multiple places and being willing to deal with the potential frustrations associated (remembering login credentials, hoping not to see spoilers if you go to the wrong place, etc.).

The apps themselves also suck in comparison to what existed before this most recent deal. The ability to start a game from the beginning only exists on ESPN+ to my knowledge, it's completely unavailable when watching on Hulu, and you can't watch a recording at all if it's on TNT (if you can, I haven't found it). The blackouts are terrible and further hurt the NHL. To your point, they should be trying to become more visible, not less, and they aren't doing a great job of that lately.

Didn’t take Bolduc long to pass Aho. I do like Aho, he hasn’t been bad to be honest and has gotten better as year has gone on. I could see isles getting depth forward or 3rd or 4th round pick for him.
I just don't see what you see in Aho. He is a wreck in his own end.

AFAIC Aho was better at the first pass out of his own end than what we had on our bottom pair last year. He gets surpassed by a better defenseman (which isn't hard to find).

I think NYR saw the Hughes injury as an opportunity to pass NJD over the next couple of weeks and pulled the trigger on this.

Wonder what happens with Kane now.

I feel like the rangers will wind up with Meier.
As a rental? They only have a couple million in expiring contracts and a few RFAs who are going to get paid (Miller, Laf, Chytil).

Well that sucks...

Hopefully that works out as well for them as the Buchnevich for Blaise NYR/STL trade. Makes sense though that they're going for a rental instead of a Meier.

Wonder what happens with Kane now.
BUF?
