Just think Romanov will make a difference in a heavy slugging playoff series one day. Kid blocks shot and should make it hard. Bolduc does look good but has had some injury issues even going back to junior days unless i'm mistaken.
Romanov is under control at a reasonable rate - he's going nowhere whether he ultimately ends up a 3rd pair D instead of a 2nd pair. I think NYI need to do whatever it takes to make Bolduc a regular roster D. When you add looking the part (really playing competently) to his size, athleticism, and endurance, there's only upside.

I also think Mayfield will go (unless NYI play badly before the deadline, I think he walks in FA), as I think NYI will hope to extend Varlamov at a lower rate. The only problem with that is that I Varlamov might want to be closer to home (which, as I understand it, is Texas, not Russia).

Replacing a bottom pair RD while being close to the cap is a normal problem for good NHL franchises, and it's not something to worry about right now. The worry imo for NYI in the near future is still on the wing, and that's even if Barzal transitions to beinga top-line winger. It's probably the easiest position to reload with draft picks, but oh well.

Chychrun, imo, is beyond a pipe dream. I would love NYI not to be the only NY metro area team without a Jewish star player (like Fox & Hughes), but oh well.

If Bolduc really starts to emerge, could we see Romanov going to Arizona as part of a Chychrun deal?

AZ gets back another young, cost controlled dman++. Just food for thought.

Romanov should not be moved. Give him time. He just turned 23 last month.! He's a solid player for the top 6 whether is 2nd or 3rd pair minutes

I don't know what will happen the rest of the way, but I have enjoyed watching the development of younger players like Holmstrom and Bolduc, which also includes the growth of the AHL/NHL tweeners like Fasching, Wotherspoon, etc.

I also hope the Isles keep Dufour, unless they are blown away by a trade for a star forward. I just get the feeling that Dufour will be a very good player for the Isles in time.

While the prospect pool overall is mediocre, being able to develop players who are inexpensive and can slide right into the lineup is a nice luxury to have.

I just want to get in here with the prediction that this thread will pivot from:

"Oh no, Lou is going to trade a 1st round pick when he should tear it down and rebuild";

to:

"Just watch, Lou is going to sit on his hands when he should be trading the '25 first round pick and go for it."
We already went down the fork where we mortgage the future to win now, so we better keep doing that until we’re out of runway. Trading for Horvat and not going all in this season would be asinine.

In no way am I saying Mayfield should be delt, but if Bloduc keeps building on games like tonight is he the guy that takes that spot or does Aho lose ice time?
It should be Aho since they both play the same side of the ice.

When I see Lambert use Bolduc in the last minutes of a close game that will be the signal that Mayfield's on the way out.

I’m team “play your natural side”, i know Trotz was and I’m guessing Lambert feels the same way, and there’s a good reason for that.
Agreed. Especially when it comes to rookie defensemen. Let's make them as comfortable as possible.

Is Hutton playing well? He’s signed for two more years after this and I thought the whole point of that was that he might take over Mayfield’s spot.
Hutton missed the first 29 games of the season due to an injury. He's probably just getting his legs under him now.

I was thinking about that during the game. Romonov is kind of redundant with Bolduc. It is hard to move a guy because a young guy played a good 5-10 games though…maybe we should just enjoy our depth for the moment.

The odds that Lou moves Romanov or Varly are slim to none. They were acquired because they’re close with Sorokin. They aren’t going anywhere
(Obligatory IMO).

(Obligatory IMO) Bolduc will most likely be moved for Tarasenko or Chychrun.

He also bring an element we lack, throwing the body away from the boards. Yes Mayfield clears the slot but mostly with hacks and whacks, crosschecking. Romanov loves hitting people and does it pretty good. So should Mayfield not be in the plans moving forward Romanov still brings that aggressiveness needed on the back end.

I genuinely can't see Romanov getting moved so soon.
This guy would do it.

Romanov and Bolduc play different styles, not comparable at all. The only thing they have in common is they play on the same side of the ice.

Bolduc will make Aho unnecessary.

If I knew I had a Bolduc playing the way I have seen in recent games, I would never of made a move for Romanov , he has looked poised and more than capable.

I would certainly be ok with that , would not want to see Bolduc moved based on what I’ve seen.
Bolduc hit his stride this year, he struggled through last year in Bridgeport. I think left side with Pelech, Romanov and Bolduc is really good actually. Bolduc is offensive guy, he is going be 30-40point NHLer I think. He has bomb for shot, as hard if not harder than Pulock

Bolduc was fantastic in Bridgeport before last year. I think the injury last season made it difficult for him to get into midseason form.

If I remember correctly, during training camp a couple of seasons ago Trotz was comparing Bolduc to Victor Hedman. I don’t recall Trotz making any other sort of gaudy comparison during his entire time here. He’s come to the NHL and so far has shown that he belongs. Excited to see what comes next for him

Is there any way the Isles could fit Meier at $9M under the cap next year if, say, they include Bailey as part of the deal and don't re-sign Mayfield? Because, there are lots of contenders that would love to have him, but how many could fit him next year to make him more than a rental? Even the Devs have to be a bit careful with all of the contract they're going to have to be signing in the next couple of years.
