Must win tomorrow night before the all star break.

Win or Lose, there will be 30 games left to the end of the season.
They will have to play over 600 hockey to get themselves back into it.
Possible, but not likely.

I do not believe Lou will make a deal for the short term. If he makes a deal it will be for tomorrow and today, like a trade for Meier. IMO, he should move Mayfield... at 1.45 AAV, he should command a 1st+, but II believe Lou resigns Mayfield as he sees him as a core piece.

It shouldn't stop Lou from moving Varlamov... who I believe can help replenish some draft picks.

Parise could be moved, but it should be Zach's decision.

Bailey and Others are offseason moves... if at all.

What's up SI!

1st five out of box after break are winnable games for playoff teams

Philly there, then Sea, Van, at home, at Mtl home Ott

Then Pit Bos, Pit

I too think it's possible. Hopefully the break will serve us well. I really like how Palmieri looks. Hope he stays healthy.
Sorry for the morbid analogy but you guys remind of the patient on his fourth round of chemotherapy with a life expectancy of one month who’s making plans for next Thanksgiving.

Call the palliative care service. It’ll be ok. Don’t worry.

What exactly is Newhook? Is he a top six forward at all? I am assuming if he was the Avs would not be trying to trade for a top six forward.

Personally I think Newhook will be ~50-60 point winger in the future and will cost 3-4M to re-sign to his next deal. Avs have their winger spots locked up with Rantanen, Landeskog, Nichushkin and Lehkonen. We don't have the cap space to have 3M+ wingers on our 3rd line. Newhook might make it as a center, but our windows is now and we don't have the time to wait for him to become 2C. With the right makeup we have a couple of years to try to win the cup, and after that MacKinnon, Rantanen, Landeskog, Nichushkin, Lehkonen.. all will be 30+. Nelson fits our windows better than Hook.

I like Mayfield. Does he resign for reasonable number before the TDL? What would a replacement look like?
What is reasonable for Mayfield? For the club? For him? He's 31 and at the end of the biggest sweetheart deal in the league. He has one last shot at getting paid and I don't want the Islanders to make that mistake of giving him 5x5 million, which some team surely will on July 1st.

Agree so do you move him if we are out which is likely. Can we get rid of Beau by leveraging that? Obviously Lou has Kicked the tires on Chychrun. Is there a replacement out there?

I think we'll retain him for 4/3.75

Josh Manson deal - but one extra year.

players think about total $ and Lou has shown the tendency to go longer to bring the AAV down- Cizikas and Martin are examples.

So, I can see Lou asking Mayfield what he wants and if it is 25m - I can see Lou going to a year 6.

Mayfield turns 31 next year
Year 6 Mayfield turns 36. And for context the same age Boychuk was when he retired.

If Lou gives Mayfield 4M + for 6 years that brings him to retirement in a season where we don’t make the playoffs, have no prospect pool to speak of, cannot score goals, and have 2 top4 RHD until team control for the foreseeable future he should be fired on the spot.

Chiarot got a first plus. Savard got a first plus. This should be one of the easiest decisions in recent history

If it was me, I would move him too.

But to play Devil’s advocate, who do you replace him with if you want to compete next year and maximize the Sorokin prime years?

Top 4 - pelech, Pulock, Romanov, Dobson, and ? Aho and Schenn? TVR?

The prospect pool has started coming in this year. You’re seeing it now. Raty, Holmstrom, Aho, Bolduc. With Dufour, and possibly Robin Salo and Ruslan Ishkakov getting real chances next season. I’m comfortable with this.

Hudson Fasching I don’t consider a prospect. More of an AHL vet who was a pleasant surprise. I’m sure he’ll get a look next training camp as well.

I'm not keen on Lou buying, because this team looks like it needs a retool. But it by miracle they make a run and are within a playoff position, to what extent would everyone be willing them to buy?

Any chance something around Wahlstrom (sorry @Mike C), Salo and Josh Bailey for Brock Boeser works?. I would also be willing to take on Tanner Pearson if it was needed to send Bailey the other way.

The deal assumes that Vancouver wants to get out from under Boeser's three years and that Boeser's value is lowered. Tanner Pearson, I buyout for cheaper then Bailey if I must this offseason.

Boeser isn't any slower than Bailey, is not much older than Wahlstom, is similarly injury prone. Maybe Wahlstrom can become what Boeser was for Vancouver under a new competitive window?

I like young Ollie and he's one of those guys I'd root for elsewhere but not gonna break my crayons if he gets dealt. Sometimes change works to the benefit of all involved

I am quite impressed with many of these Lou picks coming in just now as well. We do not have that game changer (unless you count Dobson) but a lot of quality guys being brought in.

Raty is going to have to improve his skating but he reminds me of Tavares in the sense that he has a lot of quality skills at a young age but his skating is going to hold him back unless he improves it.

I think the plan would be to fill it internally, likely with Bolduc and Aho on his off side on the third pairing like they’re doing now. Probably bring in a cheap steady defensive minded vet to duke it out with them.

If it were me though, seeing how some of these LHD have played I’m probably trying to deal Romanov for a comparable RHD. Bolduc, Wotherspoon, and Aho have all showed that they can compete in some capacity, and behind that there’s still Cholowski, Salo, Odelius, George... Unfortunately there’s nothing really in the pipeline on the right side

That line of thinking is exactly what got us into this mire in the first place. If they sign Mayfield to a long term deal, then basically all spots on D are taken for years to come, except maybe Aho's spot. The thing with rosters is that they go stale over time, and that is where the Isles are right now. Lots of players have been on this team for a decade or more, and will be up to 15 or more by the time their deals run out.

If the Islanders are serious about going forward then they have to have a dynamic roster and Mayfield should go,.

Agreed, no game breakers, but maybe enough 20 goal scorers to give this team a balanced threat without making a trade that robs Peter to pay Paul, or requires a UFA getting a stupid contract.

And for later round guys getting any NHL talent out of them is a huge win

Mayfield is a big reason why we have a top 5 PK. Replacing him internally with Bolduc and Aho reminds me of replacing Streit with Matt Donovan

At the same time though, Mayfield’s future with us if there is one would be in a bottom pairing role. We have Pelech, Pulock, Romanov, and Dobson all locked up for the next few years. I really don’t see Mayfield beating out any of those four for more minutes. Maybe he could be on the level of Pulock or Romanov, but those two already have contracts signed. Mayfield is really the odd man out right now and it doesn’t make sense to give him $5 million+ per year long term when we can fill out the bottom pairing somewhat easily either through internal options or low cost free agents.
