This will be an unpopular opinion, but it’s one I am suggesting based on my belief that NYI is done on the trade market (for a defenseman at least).

Brad Hunt, 1 year 1M for a third pairing role, have Salo start the year in Bridgeport. He’s a veteran who had as many points last season in 50 games as Romanov has had in his entire career thus far.

Pelech-Dobson
Romanov-Pulock
Hunt-Mayfield

I think NYI needs a little more offensive pop on the back end and Hunt can provide that (another option would be Yandle but I believe Hunt is better). In a perfect world, he loses his job to Salo at some point throughout the season, but depth is key at the start of the year.
Ive never heard of brad hunt until now. Had to google him

Suppose Sorokin gets hurt or delayed in Russia. Are you willing to throw away a season on that? This team is built from the net out. Strong goal tending and good defense will be imperative if this team has ideas of competing this season. Let’s move a forward to create cap space for a new forward.
Not to mention if we do make the playoffs and need a quality backup as we saw many times this past post season

A bailey replica? Come on now. Hes one of a kind.
Hahaha. Funny one 😄 👍

Tampa is built from the net out as well, who is their backup?

Spending 5 million on a backup goalie is stupid. Sorokin can play 55-60 games. Go spend that 5 million towards a forward that can put the puck in the net for 82 games.
Tampa also had Hedman McDonough Sergachev and Chernak as well as forwards that defend supremely well. Not sure their "net out" is comparable to ours

That's fine, I'm curious who are we getting in FA for our offense? We don't have cap space without moving Bailey and Vary. We have to resign Dobson which will be around 4-5M per, you have to resign (lou said he was) all our RFAs like Romanov who will probably get around 2M, Bellows and Salo. Also remember Brazal needs a new contract next year.

I agree. Clearing salary like that but not replacing it with an upgrade is not a good move. It needs to be for a marked improvement in order to bother moving anyone out. Imagine moving Bailey and then signing a replica of him in free agency at the same or a higher cap hit? It just doesn't make sense.
I am not a true Bailey hater but I would say it may be addition by subtraction. The cap space if not used this summer COULD be used at the TDL. Avoiding us getting shunned at UFA and possibly landing someone with term. Totally understand there is a risk.

Assuming he doesn't go overseas and still wants to play in NHL, a reunion with Thomas Greiss wouldn't be a bad option, and after a horrible season with the Red Wings last year, he probably could be had for about 2 million or so.

He had a similarly poor season in 2017-18 with us and responded with a great year, winning the Jennings with a 2.28GAA and sparkling ,927 save percentage. He probably isn't doing that again, not at 36-years old.

It isn't a far cry though to expect close to his final season with us in 2019-20 (2.74/.913) or his debut 2020-21 season with Detroit (2.70/.912) where in 30+ starts each year his numbers were remarkably similar.

Semyon had a 2.91/.911 last season with us and his 2-year average (sandwiching his 2.08 career-season) of 2.76/.913 is right in line with what Greiss did his previous two seasons before this one.....

Something around Wahlstrom?
I don’t think it will even cost that much, probably picks. I remember hearing he fell out of favor with the org and they’re low on assets.

He’s also a pending UFA. Good chance we don’t because of the impending 5 million dollar contract after.

That’s the cream of the UFA class crop, curious to see if NYI can land an impact forward, then maybe trade a body or two?

Who do we all want?

A Bailey replica would finish off Bones
Implying Bones isn’t already finished off, that’s rich.

Same here - but I think the idea of a cheap offensive D for the 3rd pair may be on target.
Wasn’t trying to blow anyone’s socks off, just seems like a guy like Ian Cole would be redundant now with Romanov in the fold.

Sure, they can hand the job to Salo but I have a sour taste in my mouth after he (rightfully) trashed Bridgeport when he got sent down after his stint last season. Also, he didn’t really seperate himself enough from a guy like Wotherspoon during the couple AHL playoff games I saw.

Other left shot offensive D options on the UFA market would be…

Leddy (probably too rich for NYI’s blood at this point)
Kulak (probably stays in EDM or wants a top four role)
Yandle (yuck)
Gustafsson (been there, done that)
Aho (see above)
DeKeyser (his back is shot)
Butcher (could be a nice value pickup)

If NYI has some extra cap laying around by camp, maybe they take a gamble on Gardiner. Of course if Carolina is paying NYI to do so.

Ghost is also out there as a guy who is who year away from UFA, so is Sanheim.

Bring back Greene as the #6/#7 to rotate with Salo for the #3LD next to Mayfield. The old man would be super cheap and he has some juice left to split time. Use the cap savings to bolster the forwards.

Other than Leddy that list doesn't contain much appeal. I think something other than UFA may be the way to go. Like Brendan Dillon, Nick Holden, PO Joseph, etc.. Or maybe Lou just waits to see if something shakes loose over the summer or closer to camp. Also, teams may look to move guys next week to make room for UFAs. That would be a good time to get a 3rd pair guy. To your point, if Gaudreau goes to Philly and they look to move Sanheim. Not that he's a 3rd pairing guy....
