Interesting move considering they have Cossa coming up, and Nedeljkovic.

You have to think that Yzerman saw an affordable chance to add an asset in Husso, who can bring some immediate competition and perhaps offer some stability in net, then they can internally decide who they want to keep as the core and perhaps trade the third goalie down the line.

It wouldn't surprise me if they trade one of the goalies and either recoup the initial cost of the third rounder, or even slightly better the return. And if two of the goalies take off, all the better for Detroit, which is a good problem to have.

Day 2 here should be about shedding some salary to prime yourself for the next moves. Another key for romanov deal is he won’t cost you crazy money…assuming they can get it done for under 3AAV…now you unload a Bailey or Varlamov and you can make some moves at forward which obviously Lou has in his plans as well since he was trying to acquire Miller. Let get it done Lou!

In an ideal world, I hope the Isles can retain Varly (at least for now) and just shed Bailey's $5 million cap hit in the near term.

Futures would be preferred, since it adds some chips to the Isles pipeline, but even swapping out Bailey for a middling, third-pairing LHD with a year or two on their contract at $2-2.5 million AAV (max) would be big.

Two of the three immediate holes filled (LHD2 and LHD3), with around $15 million in cap space to get one top forward, extend the core free agents plus a depth signing or two, would work for me.

Bailey to Boston for Mike Reilly?

Don’t get me wrong, I like the Romanov trade but now I’m worried that Lou is scheming to trade the 2023 first round pick for a forward.
That pick does not make it past the trade deadline if the isles are in the thick of the playoff race.

Bailey to Boston for Mike Reilly?

Boston does have a nice collection of LHDs.

Reilly would be a great fit alongside Mayfield (with Reilly providing JUST enough offense), but I would probably even take Forbort and then just shuffle up the pairings a bit. Maybe try -

Pelech-Dobson
Forbort-Pulock
Romanov-Mayfield

Again, Reilly would be the "easier" fit and I have liked him for a while, but adding Forbort brings some size and more physicality (100 blocks, 133 hits last season).

It would also make not being able to retain Mayfield, beyond next season, easier with Forbort eventually dropping down to the third pairing, perhaps alongside Hutton in 2023 at, what, a total of $4 million for both?

For what it is worth.

Love it, it's the right move for Lou to make. You need to keep Beau at least another year to see if the new coach and hopefully coach system helps bring out more offensive in his game. We certainly need his speed and two way play.

Bailey and Vary just need to go. Vary is a nice security blanket for Sorokin but we can't afford it. We can make due with a backup like Holtby. The thought of moving 10M in salary is just incredible.

I like Beau, he is more of what we need. Like to see him under a new coach where he can use his speed and skills. Moving Bailey and Varly would make us younger. I think we need to move towards injecting more youth on the big club.

No reason to sell low on Beauvillier.

I hope Miller is still attainable, but I’d love to see another move today or next week before Free Agency.

Varlamov should be able to net a nice return and Holtby would be a nice 35 game guy, he’s worked with Korn in the past so who knows.

Totally agree with your post about trying to move Bailey and holding onto Varly for the immediate future. Would be nice to see where this roster is and how they come out of the gate and have some cap flexibilty following UFA and moving into the TDL.

Just a note on Varly: my understanding of the rumor with Edmonton is that he WOULDNT waive, not that he didn’t waive. Reason I mention is that there seems to be an assumption that he’s on the block because we tried to trade him and he blocked it. I’m still of the belief that they’re not going to trade him but we’ll see, at this point it seems like if it’ll happen, it’ll happen if a team is desperate and missed out on the goalie carousel (see: Colorado last year).

EDIT: i should also note that the Edmonton rumor started with Nichols. Make of that what you will.
