I can see us as a Wild Card team. But I am curious, why is THN so sour on the Capitals this season?
Backstrom out indefinitely
Wilson out to start the season
Ovi a year older
Dylan Strome is their 2C

PTOs getting signed - does Lou bring anyone in on PTO?
Good Q. I personally don’t think so up front but I can see a goalie.

Outside the 14 set forwards there are a good amount of solid Bridgeport guys. Depth isn’t an issue up front.

On D I can see an argument for that 3rd LD but I think that competition is between Salo, Aho and Cholowski or whatever his name is. Of course I wouldn’t mind more but that’s a lot of competition as is. Plus it’s not like it’s guaranteed that the second of the best is going to get the 7th spot, that could easily go to Hutton. So there’s good competition there.

But in goal we totally have our set two with Varly and Sorokin but Appleby I don’t know too much about and it looks like they are giving the shot to Skarek with Schneider not being brought back. But would it hurt to have a 5th guy on a PTO even if it’s just to alleviate some time for the starters?

Don’t be surprised if Schneider is brought back as one of the last moves of the off-season. He had an absolutely monster year in the AHL and won his only NHL start. He is a capable backup when there are short term injuries and right now is def better then any prospects we have. Because of that, I think If there is room he will be brought back.

I wonder if he’d want to as well. He was terrific in the playoffs. Isles may want Skarek to get the minutes though.

In 2020, the Isles used their 7th round pick on a huge (6'7") overage goaltender from Finland named Tikkanen.

They just signed him to an AHL contract this year after he went 13-4 for MoDo (Allsvenskan) and won his only SHL start, allowing one goal in the process.

I'm thinking the team wants this to be a year where Skarek is leading the way with Appleby hopefully getting outplayed by Tikkanen over the course of the season.

With Schneider and Lou being the friends they are, it's imaginable that he'd re-enter the picture if some injuries take place.

Good call

they wouldn't bench a veteran that gets outplayed by a camp invite so what's the point just like they won't bench a veteran that gets outplayed by Bellows
The point would be to bring in competition for the 6 D spot and to push for the final F position.

Milano and Stralman would be the two I would bring in - Stralman can play his offhand and add more stability and experience than the other 6D candidates. Salo is waiver exempt, pushing Aho and Cholowski to battle it out for the 7th d.

Milano is an upgrade to Bellows and right now would be cheaper - Bellows at 1.2 will pass waivers and can be the first call up. Oth of these moves add serious depth to the lineup in case of injury or poor play.

I doubt Bellows can outplay any vet in our lineup. He can't skate. He's Michael Dal Colle with a better release.

Edit=Bellows can probably outplay Matt Martin. That's about it though.

You also have to think that Parise as good as he was last season - he is a year older - 38 years old.

He has been riddled by injury issues in the past and now he will be expected to play a style of play and role that will tax his body more.

He goes down - it goes to Bellows and Johnston or an AHL call up. I think Milano is great addition to the mix. Bellows contract is almost 100% buried only 50k would count to the cap. If they sign Milano for 1m that would actually save $ on the cap

They won't sign Milano or anyone else. The roster is set barring someone falling into their lap on waivers.
I doubt they pick up anyone off waivers - anyone who falls in their lap is going to be higher cap hit than someone like Stralman at this stage. IMO, they like the cap cushion they have.

Don’t be so sure about that this is the roster. They have 44/50 contracts - if one of those goes to Wotherspoon they have some room to add another body for depth.

Again Milano and Stralman improve the roster and actually may even cost less than the players they’d replace.

I’ve read Bellows worked all summer on improving his skating. Let’s hope it helped. With his size he could be an effective 3rd liner assuming his skating becomes adequate.

Bellows said in his brief press conference after agreeing terms with NYI that he’s been working on his skating this summer.

Martin is another year older (which based on your edit you seem to realize), and Parise is 38 and could be an injury away from missing 25 games (more than enough for a hungry Bellows to win a job).

I get expecting the worst, but at the same time I am hoping for the best.

Cody Eakin agrees to PTO with Flames.
Good move by Calgary.

Still hoping for Stralman and Milano in that order
