I think this means Rantanen realized his agent's idea of his worth wasn't happening in Colorado or Dallas, so he would be hoping for a huge number on July 1 or take one of the Carolina/Dallas offer.

And the lack of state income tax comes into play.

Part of me wants Carolina to say f*** it, offer Rantanen an 8x15, and reset the market. The Canes have the sort of cap space to do such a thing, and I think it would be amazing for the Canes to not be second-fiddle to teams like Vegas/Dallas/Florida/Rangers for free agents.

Anything less than Johnston, Robertson or Hintz and I will be disappointed. Stankoven, Bourque, etc. just do not move the needle for a top 10 scoring forward on an 8 year deal. But I'm absolutely expecting and preparing to be disappointed.

The return should be good considering he comes with a signed contract. Dallas has a lot of revolving contracts about to open and can’t afford everyone - more so with the Rants contract.

With that said, I’m expecting to be underwhelmed.

It could be Robertson. From a contractual standpoint, he'd actually be an upgrade for the Hurricanes over Necas, as he will be an RFA with arb rights upon expiration.
