I could see a team doing high 7’s x 7 years, I think the FO would have a hard time thinking that’s a good deal to accept in our current cap structure. My guess is if the Canes FO thinks this scenario could happen, he gets traded before an offer sheet happens.
Remember, an offer sheet total gets averaged over max 5 years. So that would be 49 million over 5 years, or 2 1sts + 2nd + 3rd.

I think Carolina matches 7, though.

Anything after 7 x 7.675 million equals a 4 1st rounders compensation. Compensation takes the whole dollar offered and divide by 5 years (if you offered more than 5 years). Even a 7x7 deal is a 2 1st, 2nd and 3rd compensation. Unlikely to be offered anything to that magnitude. Someone may offer a 1 year deal at max 1st and 3rd AAV just to see if we would risk pushing the can down the road. Either way we would match any reasonable offer. Even if it was a 5 x high 7s AAV deal

Necas honestly seems like a prime offer sheet candidate. It’s going to be tough to find a long term number that works for him in Carolina. I think negotiations will be rough. Wouldn’t shock me for a team to value him high, give him a deal he really likes, and makes it a really hard decision for the Canes to accept the offer sheet.

Do it. Either it's the easiest match ever, or it's a shitload of draft capital, some of which we can use to reload a replacement.

that could be, but I think we need to be careful reading too much into post game comments.

For years, I felt that Rod praised Svech and Staal (and even TT) at the drop of the hat, but his praise for Aho was always less enthusiastic. It was more like (paraphrasing) "Well, he should be, he's our best player" or "He can still get better" or "he knows how he has to play to be considered a top player", etc..

Yet when Aho re-signed, he praised RBA. I'm not saying it's the same situation with Necas, but I saw a similar type of reluctant praise for Aho compared to Svech/Staal, etc...

In the end, I think it will come down to money, as most of these things do. Canes will have a value, Necas and his agent will have a value.
As I’m sure you know the best leadership knows what buttons to push to motivate players. Some need praise, others a different approach.

So does he still think we are trading Necas for Soros? His insights are becoming less and less insightful and more suspect.

There's a difference between reporting (what he did in this case) and speculating to fill airtime (what he did with the Saros talk). That's the not the reason to dismiss it. They kick tires on everyone. Perhaps it's just due dilligence.

It is an interesting year. They'd be justified in doing nothing of note. They'd be justified in going for a top tier rental that one time. A team like the Caps fought the urge for a decade and then finally went for it in their max talent year (Shattenkirk). Ironically, they won the cup the year after, with a shallower roster.

I keep hearing Brady Tkachuk might pop loose in Ottawa. If he comes available I have to think we'd be all over it like stink on shit.

But if we do, we would need to be willing to actually pay top billing this time.
Where are you hearing that? A source you know or from media/insiders?

I would think that won't be enough as I would easily give up the much for Tkachuk. A roster player like Necas or Jarvis will have to be included as well and that probably still isn't enough as there would be many times lining up for him if he was to come available.

Unless Brady has asked for a trade, I can't imagine Ottawa wanting to trade him. Like Whitney says, can't believe anyone would be that dumb.

He'd be a player I'd even give up Nikishin for.
