this was solid work by larry here.

he can be a very solid read.

and i agree, ADA is a unique talent and someone we must resign and wrap up.

what hes done this season has answered every critic and then some.

hes a valuable brick in this rebuild and the locker room as well.
For years the Rangers have been the guy in the pg-13 movie everyone’s really hoping makes it happen. But I want them to be the guy in the r rated movie...sometimes. TDA is a guy like that.

Things that I'm not hoping for but might not surprise me

1) DeAngelo is moved at the draft due to his high asking price.
2) Fast walks
3) Lundqvist is moved to Colorado(this I'm hopeful for)

Don’t think you can pencil in Lundkvist so unless it’s like DeAngelo for Sergachev not many deals will make sense

Only can protect 3D in expansion. That’s a big deal for me so I see no other D brought in

Fast will stay imo

No way Colorado takes Hank they have 2 good younger goalies

The good news is when you seriously call a player a “winner” or a “loser” like it’s a skill it immediately tells you whether or not that person is even worth listening to.

It’s taken me a long time to get to this point, but I think I’ve accepted Lundqvist has played his last game as a Ranger.

The question is is it a trade or a buyout. Would hate to see the relationship end in the latter.

Carolina could use him maybe. We have established trade connections with them. Could San Jose make a quick turn around with Hank in nets? Can’t see many other trade fits

Call me crazy but I wouldn't trade ADA for Sergachev, honestly. I don't think Sergachev is all he's cracked up to be.

A top 6 of:

Panarin-Strome-Hall
Kreider-Zibanejad-Buchnevich

And before anyone starts about the "But, but Panarin and Hall are both left wingers" stuff... Sure, that is important for the first 5 seconds after a face off. How many goals have Hall or Panarin scored or assisted on when they were on the right side? A ton

Disagree that it’s only the first 5 seconds - this take is overly simplistic (there’s a reason why Buchnevich couldn’t adopt to playing on LW, and he’s not alone). Not always a given that LW / RW position is interchangeable. Regardless there’s close to zero chance that Hall and the Rangers are mutually interested.

Disagree on player’s assessment but even putting this aside and assuming Gorton is set to move ADA because of the perceived excess at RD (let’s assume it’s the case), wouldn’t Sergachev be a good value? If not who instead?

I think an arbitration bridge would be a preferable move considering he probably hasn't played at this level long enough to garner sufficient value.

Preferable for who? Arbitration tends to look at the very recent history so even the last half of 2018-2019 season could be a support for the argument that 2019-2020 wasn’t a fluke when looking for comparables. I think the Rangers would prefer not to go arbitration route.

DeAngelo needs an 8 year deal. Not a 5 year deal. We've got into so much cap trouble over the years by doing just this (in addition to giving term to the wrong guys).

You’re right but if a question is it has to be a 5-year deal (because ADA camp would want another long term contract after this) or a bridge deal - I’d take 5 years instead of 1-2 years only.

I’ve already posted about this. Players value security over chancing a second larger contract for the most part. Most players take the big 7-8 year guaranteed payday as opposed to a shorter deal expecting everything to go right and then get another. The good news is his agent must in fact be dumb enough not to know these benefits as he has multiple clients on very long term deals. I am not going to do the research and post it again as I already have.

5-year deal would be the best of both worlds for ADA - enough long-term security and a chance for another big payday.

If I’m Gorton, I’m bridging DeAngelo at 4.5m-5m.

It gives you time to figure out if Nils is a better cheaper option. If the better option ends up being DeAngelo, he’s not going to cost that much more in two years. I wouldn’t be surprised if this season was his peak offensive performance.

I’m saving my long term dollars for Shesterkin, Fox, Kakko, and Chytil before DeAngelo.

If the better option ends up being DeAngelo there is a real chance he ends up costing double that in two years.

This is very difficult to say with any certainty.

ADA would probably take about 6.5-6.75 million to lock up long term right now. Another two seasons like the one he just had, and that figure jumps to like 8-8.5 million.

Bridging allows us to deal him then while still having RFA status, which is good, but we can't assume the price stays the same.

If there is another team that values DeAngelo at $10m in 2 years, I’m trading him anyways. He’s below average in his own zone. He would have to be a top 3 offensive defenseman in the league to make that much. He’s not. No way.

I think the difference is 6.5m to 8.25m between now and 2022 at most. I’m happy to pay that cost to make sure we know what we have in Lundkvist. We need to get it right, and get it right long term. If so much money wasn’t tied up in the right side with Trouba and soon Fox, I might think differently.

I wonder if any — many? — teams will get into financial trouble from this thing, and even be forced to cut spending?

The NHL operation should be fine, but can the owners that has been supporting their teams keep doing it?

Why does it have to be d for d? Smith can move right side as one option, but that's not the point anyway. If Deangelo wants 6.5 to 7 mill over 7 years they will move him, it wont matter if Lundqvist is ready or not.

Fast should have been signed by now if he was resigning, it's not like 500 grand either way would be much of a swing for us.

Colorado would definately want Hank for one year, their goalies as you say are young, we would have to make it work for them.

DeAngelo just finished a season fifth in points for defensemen. If Chytil ever becomes that valuable we'd win like 15 Cups.
