So...Fox, basically.

Yeah that's my feeling after seeing his moves, and the Athletic poll of players/agents. They rated him among the top GMs who were more business-oriented/apathetic, which I'm fine with.
Skjei and Fox are on polar opposites of the hockey IQ spectrum. Brady with a brain is like Dmitri Orlov.

I guess it's relative to how much "brains" that "Skjei with brains" equates to lol

"Skjei with brains" pretty much correlates to anything with "more than a few brain cells" to "Einstein on skates".

if the difference between skjei and fox is hockey IQ and you are giving brady a brain then you just took away that difference.

Enough talk of Skjei. Eventually when my work life slows down this spring I'm going to have to pick a new username.

They got a first for him, that's awesome. It's like in wrestling when the heel manager holds down the good guys tights and the heels win the titles. You take it, and run like hell to the back before anyone realizes what happened.

You only get to change it once a year minimum so I'd like to make it count.

I'm leaning towards moving out of this area within the next 12-14 months once life kind of returns to normal so I was thinking something with Countdown, Escape From NY, or maybe a music reference like The Doors (This Is The End) or Jeff Buckley (Last Goodbye).

One of the other Russians. I'd say Georgiev because Rykov and Kravtsov live together in CT with a billet family
I don’t know anything. But my sense is VK has turned his mindset around 180 degrees. Seems he’s really buying in to the Rangers guidance. I’m probably over-stating it, but I hope I’m right.

2020-21 is an RFA year so he can't have a clause for that season anyway. Even if we give him every possible clause on his extension, he can be exposed for the expansion draft
This kind of info... I feel like I should be paying monthly for access here.
but then there are the nutter posters who bring this place back to earth ;)

I think there are much bigger issues at hand than whether or not the arena workers are paid their likely $300-$500 they would have made (before considering taxes) for working the remaining 5 or so home games. It's purely a PR move. I'm essentially out of my second (and generally higher paying) job for the foreseeable future and don't see anyone campaigning to compensate me for that since it's not in the public eye.
True. But these are not mom and pop operations. And they are in the public eye. It’s literally a second’s-worth of cost for these guys. Pay the staff through the end of the regular season. It’s dumb not to. I suspect it’s more of an oversight than anything else.

So, it starts to seem like there is an overwhelming risk for that this Corona thing will have a lasting significant effect on the economy. First this phase that we are in right now, but secondly of course through all the ripple effects in the economy. A situation stress testes everything in a way that doesn't happen normally, there will be collateral damage.

Anyway, the topic for this post is that we got a whole new cap situation going forward the coming 2-3 years -- possibly at least. And I don't think they will let the cap actually go down no matter what, that just don't make any sense and there is no need for it. At least not over a 2-3 year period.

This really has a huge impact on how Gorton conducts his business. The market is significantly differs when everyone are in a cap squezz compared to when the cap have gone up a lot. In the former you got 15-20 teams looking to dump contracts and in the later you have 15-20 teams looking to improve their roster.

For a team like Toronto, this is a disaster. They took a calculated risk on the cap going up a lot, and would have been in a really good place with a cap going up 4-5m per year for 3-4 years. To the same extent, we would certainly have been in a better place, with the Trouba and Panarin signings, had the cap gone up as was expected. But its not like we are in a horrible place either.

1. With a stagnant cap, cap space in itself becomes really valuable. Teams will move 1 year terms of a 1st.

For taking on 6.25m x 1 year Carolina -- got the identical return we will end up getting for Skjei, i.e. Toronto's 1st. On the same topic, I think the timing for Gorts to move Skjei probably was pretty good...

We will see the same going forward.

In addition, there will be really solid value trades to be made.

2. It should probably spell the end for Jesper Fast in NY. We can't afford any "luxuries".

3. By my numbers we can keep everyone and get a lot of mobility if Hank retires. That would be huuuge for us.

4. It would be great if we could get creative with Brendan Smith. Otherwise Gorton should consider a buy-out.
Good point. And also... trading Skjei looks amazingly wise right now.

So what?

Are you also of the view that Danny Meyer should be continuing to pay all of his employees even though all of the restaurants are closed?
Yes. For a couple-few weeks you wait and see. If only for the purpose of keeping your valued staff. If this goes on for months, sure, big changes will happen. People will get laid off. But cutting people at the first chance looks poor.

Seems like the right thing to do, for me. But I respect the right to be an asshole.

And Im focusing on billionaires. I think that term gets thrown around and people dont realize how much money that actually is. The fact these people cant find some cash under their couch cushions to soften the blow for their employees whose livelihood is shattered by this delay in working is immoral.
Agree. I appreciate all the business arguments. And as you’re saying, we have no right to tell a guy how to run his business. But I also think that in a capitalist structure the rich have an obligation to be give back and step in to fill some of the social security roles. In fact, I’d prefer the rich were taxed less but more community-minded. There’s plenty of money to go around.
(Please don’t interpret this as some socialist fantasy wish. I’m for lower taxes... but with wealth and power should also come some added responsibility).

I PM’d a mod a while ago. Since I’m bored here’s all my thoughts and rumors I scooped recently. Would prefer if no one likes the post or referenced it on the main boards, I just want this for HFNYR. Debated posting on reddit but I’m afraid it’d get big. Most of this is me rambling about the system and includes a lot of my own opinion. Take it seriously or not, better than anything that’s being talked about on here. I’ve had these confirmed though but a lot of it is public knowledge, just very hidden. I’m also clearly not the best writer, a lot is jumbled

Rangers have been looking for a bigger middle 6 guy with a heavy shot for a while. We were after Puljujarvi for a while but EDM didn’t like Lias’ progression. Funny enough, Holland was prepared to take Lias at 9th overall when he was with Detroit. I was happy with the pick and I still somewhat believe it him to be a good 3rd liner. Proven leader by all accounts and he wasn’t given a fair shake here. Since Pulju didn’t work out, Rangers looked at Flyers prospect Isaac Ratcliffe for a long time. Not sure why they didn’t pull the trigger on him, I like him a lot myself and think he can be a 15-20 goal bottom 6er. Rangers checked in on Julien Gauthier late, not sure who initiated contact about this trade but I believe the Rangers did. Fantastic trade by Gorts. They’re done looking at Pulju. I don’t think the Rangers are done looking at Ratcliffe, but I’m not sure where he fits going forward. Regarding Andersson, he’ll likely back. I cannot comment on what happened to either him or Kravtsov because I do not know. Whole thing is very under wraps (nothing illegal or even as bad as it seems.) My guess is that they didn’t appreciate the locker room antics in Hartford. There’s a very good chance our first pick this year will be a defender. Two guys they love are Jake Sanderson and Emil Andrae. No idea what they plan on doing with the 2nd pick but I think they’re looking to move it. Skjei trade was very, very smart by Gorton and perfect timing. If he waited til the draft to move Skjei I very much doubt he’d have gotten that 1st rounder. Carolina was desperate at the TDL because their team “felt off” the entire year. I think they made too many shakeup moves and if the season went on they’d probably either miss the playoffs or get bounced early. Different from when CBJ went all in, though Canes didn’t go to their extent.

Rangers also scouting Calgary heavily the past two years, iirc they’ve been the team we scouted the most. We looked into Hanifin but the asking price wasn’t worth it. Good thing we never went after him because that would’ve been Skjei 2.0. Remember the TJ Brodie for Kreider rumor last year? That was false, but Hayes and Kreider we’re both linked heavily to them. I think both would’ve been good fits for Calgary. Speaking of Calgary, I know some have speculated about Johnny/Mony. Sense is that if the Flames were bounced in the 1st this year there would’ve been a shakeup trade, not as big as the Lindholm/Hamilton/Hanifin/Fox trade though. though it likely wouldn’t have involved either. If the Flames struggle next year though, I’d be VERY surprised if they kept both. Johnny is an east coast boy and there is pretty much a 0% chance either him or Tkachuk stay in Calgary the rest of their careers. Both will end up in prominent American markets, Johnny will end up in the metro eventually. Kylington+ was on the table for either Kreider or Hayes. Rangers turned it down. (Good move.)

The McDonagh/Miller trade WAS two separate trades. I think it was 1st+Howden+Hajek for McDonagh and 2nd+Namestnikov for Miller. Rangers wanted Miller gone due to his lazy play and attitude. I’m pretty surprised at his success in Vancouver and how he’s been called a leader there. Don’t expect his production to remain the same.

Howden is available, they’re not actively looking to trade him because there’s no one to replace him yet but he could be moved in a package. He’s better than HFNYR give him credit for

Don’t expect Buch to be here longer than his contract. I’d put the chances of Buch staying at like 10-20%.

Just because we traded Skjei does not mean we’re keeping DeAngelo, but I really hope we do. AFAIK, Rangers are still unsure what to do with the RHD situation. Trouba hasn’t had a great year but hasn’t been as bad as people think. Gorton is a more stone cold GM, doesn’t seem that way, but definitely is. He’ll trade Trouba if he thinks it’s the best move, even if he just signed. At the same time though, management loves Trouba and so do I. Great defenseman with an element we don’t have. Much, much better than Pionk. Still a great trade today. I’m honestly a fan of the 3 RHD defense, with each getting a partner that fits them. Having one of Trouba/Fox/Tony on the ice for the entire game is great. May not be great now but will be very soon. Each has different qualities that don’t make each other redundant. As soon as next year, all 3 will be top pair quality assuming Tony and Fox naturally progress even a bit. Staal has been legitimately good this year at defending. Still makes positional mistakes but has been excellent with his stick work. Lindgren is a stud. Hajek is a question mark. Rykov has struggled. Reunanen is interesting but I’m not too high on him anymore. Robertson doesn’t have much upside. Rangers will eventually make a move for a big time LHD. Miller has Skjei-like qualities that scare me. But two things Miller has over Skjei; his shot and his rawness.

here’s a few for now. Will be back around the draft to update if I can

Thanks- great post. I know CGY wouldn't trade their 1st that year for Hayes. They really wanted him. I also expect the Gaudreau/Monahan combo to be broken up at some point. There are open questions on whether or not they feel that they can win with them.

Wasn’t sure about site rules. People would think I was trolling if I dropped that on a new account

He really doesn’t. Good defensively and solid skater. No offensive tools, weak shot. Best case is Brady with a brain which is like a good 3D? There’s a reason he slipped, I think he’s more likely to be traded. Great kid though apparently and I was a big fan early in his draft year where I considered him a NYR target
I guess you mean Robertson’s offensive upside is limited. Which is fair. I’d be thrilled with a Smart Skjei though. Truly. That’s an excellent player. Even Skjei wasn’t as bad as many said. He just couldn’t limit the errors. If Robertson is Skjei-without-the-lapses, we’re golden.

This makes me think of the Scarecrow from Wizard of Oz.
I don’t think Skjei is legit dumb. But he is not a heady player. Can we call him The Skjeicrow?

"What does Kravtsov have to do with this?"

Just another example of poor communication. If all you do is praise someone, and then have them sent down anyway (because that is absolutely just as much on Quinn as coach than on Gorton as GM), they're gonna be confused.
No, that is not what it is. Praising someone because they did something well, is not to be conflated with it meaning that they won a spot on the roster.

What is so confusing about "Hey, good job out there. We are going to send you down so that you can work on X, Y, Z.
So clearly, while Quinn usually is a good communicator, there are times when he's not.
Because you are choosing to interpret the situation that way.
I also disagree with your assertion of "taking his ball and running home" not being the right decision, because I don't feel there's strong enough evidence to support that at the moment, not til Lias' full story comes out.
Ummm....we have seen how many prospects get sent to Hartford? Out of them all, there is only one (THE SOLE ONE) who choose to walk out on his team and fly to a different continent.

That is the definition of taking your ball and going home.
If he didn't tell the org about a foot problem, then yeah, bad on him. If he did, and they denied/ignored it and made him keep playing, then I think it's the right call.
In this day and age, with all of the social media and how much a team takes precaution, if there was any truth to the coaching staff forcing him to play injured, it would have come out by now. As such, I believe that rumor to be pure hogwash. I have seen zero evidence of Quinn forcing anyone who is injured to continue playing. If anything, it is the complete opposite. If Andersson was hurt and choose to keep it to himself, that is completely on him.

Not when you think about it. The gyms and restaurants that laid people off immediately basically did them a favor. Now they can put in for unemployment benefits. These people were not making any money whatsoever being home.

This is all debatable. Some people (Equinox employees) will get checks for a few weeks. While some (NY Sports Club) laid off all of their staff so that they can immediately get unemployment benefits. None of this changes that those two businesses are run in a specific way, with specific people at the helm who choose to operate in specific ways. At the end of the day, Union Square Hospitality belongs to Danny Meyer. He is free to run it in the best way that he perceives.
