He’s already had two 2-year deals, is he going to take a third consecutive one?
He might. A couple of more years of 60-70 points while playing with Panarin and getting paid $5m per year, and he just might get himself a good payday at 28. But he and the Rangers might find value in a deal that is a year or two longer than that.

Strome and his agent would be a dummy to take another short term deal after the year he had

If I was him I'd be looking at a 1 year arbitration award so I can walk into UFA, or a long term deal that is somewhere in the neighborhood of 5 years+

Yep, all good points and I can definitely make the distinction. All I'm saying is it'll be difficult to bring these kinds of stats to the casual fan when it spits out results like that. People will immediately dismiss the rest of what they have to say. Model needs some refining.
There’s no way to get around that, for any advanced stats. The whole point of them is to go beyond common perceptions. Outliers are expected.

There is a presumption here that he would get a deal with a lot of term and dollars on the open market. The length and dollar amount is debatable. Much as I think that he has value and detest the "anyone can do it" argument, one cannot deny the fact that playing with a player that is on a level with Panarin has certainly aided him. As it would anyone else. But knowing that, I think that we can all come to an agreement that there is no GM out there that is going to pay him as if he is a perennial 70 point player. Which means that he may not get a deal that is better than what he and the Rangers can come to. Then there is the fact that I doubt very much that Gorton is going to let him walk for free as a UFA. Which means a trade. Seeing as to his history in the league, I am not sure that he or his family would want such a disruption again.

And as I have been making a point for a while now, one needs to also consider Strome's probably wants. After bouncing around, he has found comfort in a team and a franchise. He has found the trust of a coaching staff. He has resurrected his career here. And oh yeah, he also gets to play with Panarin as a line mate. Does he really want to blow all of that up and start over again? I am thinking no. Which is why I go back to a deal of 2-4 years at $5m.

A good chunk of the GMs in the league are dummies and it only takes one to offer him big money

And his family is his wife and him, it's not like he's uprooting his kids lives. A good agent should be telling him "we're either getting our money from the Rangers, or we'll get it elsewhere"

There are some that are more shrewd than others, but it is pretty silly to think that only the people on this board are aware of the influence that Panarin had on Strome's performance.

His agent can tell him what he wants, but my gut feeling is that Strome has no desire to leave his current situation and take a chance and start over again somewhere else. There's a deal to be made and I believe that Gorton and Strome will meet in the middle.

See Okposo, Kyle

Glen Sather would do it
Honestly, I don’t think Strome has established himself to the level it would have taken for Sather to overpay him as a FA. Sather lavished dollars on UFA big names, but tightened the screws on his own FAs and those whose name wouldn’t be on a marquee.
