There is a presumption here that he would get a deal with a lot of term and dollars on the open market. The length and dollar amount is debatable. Much as I think that he has value and detest the "anyone can do it" argument, one cannot deny the fact that playing with a player that is on a level with Panarin has certainly aided him. As it would anyone else. But knowing that, I think that we can all come to an agreement that there is no GM out there that is going to pay him as if he is a perennial 70 point player. Which means that he may not get a deal that is better than what he and the Rangers can come to. Then there is the fact that I doubt very much that Gorton is going to let him walk for free as a UFA. Which means a trade. Seeing as to his history in the league, I am not sure that he or his family would want such a disruption again.
And as I have been making a point for a while now, one needs to also consider Strome's probably wants. After bouncing around, he has found comfort in a team and a franchise. He has found the trust of a coaching staff. He has resurrected his career here. And oh yeah, he also gets to play with Panarin as a line mate. Does he really want to blow all of that up and start over again? I am thinking no. Which is why I go back to a deal of 2-4 years at $5m.
