We really need to sticky a reminder that Jesper Fast very likely didn’t want to sign a contract here. The kid immediately talked shit about the organization when he left. It takes two to tango.

Possibly. But isn't it just as likely that he was salty because the Rangers showed little to no interest in bringing him back?

That’s just not true. I don’t know where this is coming from.... Fast was relieved he wasn’t dealt at the TDL that year. He wanted to be a ranger.
Not only were Carolina offering more money in terms of taxes/etc, the sticking point was Gorton would only offer the 28 year old 2 years.
Carolina has no problem going the 3rd year....
It’s no wonder he talked shit when he left. Our teams then absolutely had issues. He also so the way we played under torts etc because he was here and how soft we were etc. we def had a lot of issues.
But how do you not extend a 3rd year to the multiple time Steve MacDonald award winner??? At a 2mill cap hit to boot?? That’s not a tremendous raise from what he was making.....
He was also getting minutes with bread/strome.... he loved NY. There wasn’t much of a reason for him to choose Car over staying here if the contract lengths were similar...
The Carolina deal gave him the extra year of security. That’s likely what pissed him off and he chose to leave at that point. Fast loved NY, and loved being a ranger.
I choose to believe that Gorton wasn’t this stupid.

LAst I checked Russia's borders stretch from Koenegsberg to friggin Bering Straight. you just said it's all closed to air traffic. It's not true even from these headlines.

I agree it’s unclear. Some articles are saying just the border of Ukraine and others are saying the western border of Russia.

Sorry I meant to say all air traffic on that border.

THere are only news of some traffic interruptions/flight cancels on the south-western borders, which is logical.
Seen nothing re whole "western border" whatever that is, let alone all air traffic across Russia's space.

You’re right. Should have read deeper. I read Ukraine and Western Russia headline as all of Western Russia.

We’ll see what happens with sanctions today.

I mean considering the number of "accidents" in russian airspace Id be wary of flying around that region during an armed conflict.

I think Forsberg just isn't a fit. The cost will be too expensive for a player there is an overwhelming chance they will be unable to keep as they will still need to sign Strome / a 2C. Even if they plan to move Kreider/Trouba out at the draft to retain him that's really risky...both to team construction (will they actually be better, net) and the ability to make a good trade for one of those two when every GM knows they are over a barrel.

Hertl is almost in this bucket. But he addresses a real area of need and has trade protection (submits a 3 team list)e that should help keep his cost down should SJ decide to move him. Plus they would presumably let Strome walk if they wanted to retain him, making the cap for next year possible if very tricky. That said I personally still wouldn't give him a massive UFA deal...but admit it makes more sense.

It was reported by uncle Larry in the Post.
He would not budge on offering the 3rd year..... it’s ultimately what made fast pick carolina.
Michaletti and Sam were going On and on about How fast was thrilled the rangers didn’t decide to trade him at the TDL because he loved it here etc. fast-fwd to the Offseason, and the GM wouldn’t pony up a measly 3rd year at 2 mill for what would be a 31 yr old Fast

Maybe he thought by that time we defo would've had developed enough of the RW talent.. but then again Quicky could've been both cheap and reliable... Ah well.

It was just dumb, because even if that happened Fast becomes a very tradeable asset with that contract.
IMO, it’s also a huge reason Drury targeted Blais.
He noticed the huge whole left by fasts departure in the line up/ locker room.

it just goes to show you how 1 trade/signing can affect other facets of more moves down the line...

There really isn’t. @KreiderBomb and I talked about this last night.

Varlamov
Holtby
Greiss

There can be an argument made against any of them that Georgiev, given his age, is a better option. Those 3 are not the same goaltenders they were 2-3 years ago

Let's attack each of these

Varlamov has another year left at $5m. Unless the Islanders are retaining on this trade, the Oilers can't fit him next year. I don't see the Islanders retaining on Varlamov as they will want to retool in the off-season considering all of their vets and long term deals.

Holtby is playing for Dallas who is currently battling Edmonton for a playoff spot. They are 1 point back with 1 game in hand. Unless something absolutely drastic happens, I can't see Dallas trading their starting goalie to the team they are battling down the stretch.

Greiss is an option. @ $3.6m, the Oilers would need to send Koskinen back to make it work which I am sure Detroit wouldn't mind. He's 36 years old and hasn't played more than 34 games in a season in 3 years. This year he is at 19 game played. He does nothing to solve their goaltending issues next year unless they want to run a tandem of Smith/Griess...

To me, Georgiev gives them someone to pair with Smith for the next couple of years, at a reasonable cap hit (the Rangers could retain half and take Koskinen back this year) and, based on his track record, probably get him locked in to a 2-3 year deal at around the same cap hit he is at now if desired. Based on their cap constraints, they really need a good, not great goalie signed at a reasonable cap hit so they can allocate those dollars elsewhere. This just makes so much sense, it's odd it hasn't happened yet.

Biggest game of the season tonight and hardly any talk here on it...Reaves healthy unlike game one . Rangers with last change on home ice . Reaves and Wilson....maybe ? 62 pages...this likely closes this thread.

I like all this except I have no interest really in Koskinen.
