It most certainly does not. That is a logical fallacy. Most teams in their first time in the playoffs are not among the better teams in the league. That is not necessarily always the case.
I can’t say I disagree with you entirely, that’s not fair. I actually agree with everything said, except that playoff experience doesn’t matter at all. And calling it a logical fallacy is disingenuous…I mean, I can’t think of a single team that won the Cup and/or gone on multiple deep runs having not made the playoffs for 2-3 years prior. That’s factually accurate.

We can argue about whether or not that’s purely coincidental, but I’ll never believe that experience isn’t at all part of the equation of becoming one of those “better” teams.

22 goals for Sam Bennett. How many questions about this team would be answered now if Gorton was more opportunistic last year? Can Andrew Copp be that type of player here with an expanded role? Gritty guy with size who can play C/W in the top 9

Teams don't win in the playoffs because they don't have playoff experience. They don't win in the playoffs (in their first time) because they likely weren't that good yet which is why they missed the playoffs in the previous seasons. That doesn't mean you can't have a quick turn around and a first time playoff team that actually is good. How many of these "Teams to make the playoffs after missing it for 2+ years" were the number one or two seed in the conference? I would bet the majority of them were like the 6-8 seed and weren't expected to go far in the first place.

Yeah, and I went through all 105 years of NHL history. The longest a Stanley Cup winner went without making the play offs prior is 1 year.

No team has ever won the Cup straight after missing the play offs for 2 or more years. We have missed 4 post-seasons in a row now. (FYI: I don't count the qualifying round since that was teams ranked 9-24)

Didn't Carolina win it in 06 after missing on 02-03, 03-04 and the lock out of 04-05?

It also seems odd in a way to not count the qualifying round. Weren't we in a position to make the playoffs when the season got canned? So we scrap in, get smacked in the 1st round but have now met the criteria of 'making the playoffs in the past two years', you can then magic wand last season away with 'covid' and we've ticked the boxes. I can't see how the qualifies are really any different to Pitt's 1 playoff win in 5 years prior to making the SCF and losing to the Wings

I wanted Bennett badly last year. Kept bringing him up all season. There were so many against trading for him. Shouldve booked marked those posts.

Thats a great way for the Leafs to continue to not win a damn thing. My take: Vancouver is feeding Friedman info to try to get more contenders involved to bump the Rangers price up.
Just watched that Toronto game.

Their defense is a mess…as usual.

Their goaltending is now starting to feel the effects of the defense and is struggling.

They are too top heavy. Not enough balance. Adding another forward is so far down on the list of their needs.

If Miller is available and the Rangers do indeed want him, I don’t see how Toronto can outbid the Rangers for multiple reasons.

Although, I prefer Scheifele because of the age and contract term.
Sure they can offer a first, Amirov, Robertson/Knies (basically emptying most of the young assets they have). we should just choose to not overpay like they would since they might be desperate.

My apologies, if Dubas decides to commit occupational suicide, sure, yes they could trade what little they have in quality assets for another forward and not address their weaknesses

If the rangers are trading a bunch of assets for a trade it HAS to be someone who will be here longer than a year and a half.

The rangers have the pieces to put together a huge package for a good center, with term, and salary retention to help him fit.

Picture like a Ryan Johansson or Stamkos at 50% retention type situation.

I don’t think we should blow our cupboard up for anything less than 3 and a half cost controlled years in whatever forward we trade for.

I still think JT is their top target, but it goes down close to the deadline. Hes the exact style of player Gallant & Drury want. Highly productive, plays PP & PK, can play C or W, plays with an edge that you need in the Spring. Signed for this year and next which has been a Sather favorite at the deadline(Yandle/MSL). Nils, Kravtsov & Chytil are all assets that are a little time sensitive for varying reasons so it would benefit the Rangers to make a move on them before the summer, if it makes sense.

My main concern would be how it affects the locker room. Not because i think JT himself is an issue, but because Strome and the rest of the team would probably know that he is gone after the season ends, which could upset the apple cart. That issue would be nullified if they get him retained, but i dont see why the Canucks would do that when their goal is to cut salary.

We'll see what happens

I'll never forget what Gretzky said about losing to the Islanders. About 12 years ago he was asked about it again:

"We walked by their locker room in the corridor and saw after they won they were too beat up to really enjoy it and savor the victory at that moment," said Gretzky. "We were able to walk out of their pretty much scot free. We had so much respect for the Islanders players and the Islanders teams that we learned immediately you have to take it to another level in order to win a Stanley Cup. And that’s what we did. We learned from it and often credit for the Islanders players and Islanders teams for teaching us exactly what it’s all about and how hard it is to win.
Great anecdote. And really, I think it’s not possible for a team to make that jump without a year or two of playoff failure. I’m certainly thrilled and impressed with what the team is doing this year and I think they’re legit. But also having been through the early 90s…even teams with messier have a playoff learning curve.

I think a similar scale of package can land you either Miller or Scheifele, IF both were to be on the table. The question is, which team would be willing to retain and how much AND what would that require us to add.

That financial flexibility may not allow us to retain Strome in the offseason, but it could allow us to bring in a quality 3C behind Scheifele. For example, Andrew Copp.

I'm not sure I follow that logic.

I do have some reservations about Gallant. I'm not saying I think he's David Quinn exactly but I think he's doing some Quinn-like things, perhaps, frankly, in part because he was instructed that those are the things that worked or that the team wanted to keep the same due to the preferences of the existing veterans.

I think Gallant is a way better coach than Quinn but I would say my faith in him is currently less than when he was hired because I do think most of our success is due to Shesterkin playing lights out and that's not really Gallant's doing. I was told Gallant plays an up-tempo, high pressure game. Where is that?

The vets are not buying in on that type of hockey either because they do not like it, or are incapable of maintaining that for extended periods of time.

I think it's a combination of both.

We are not going to see that sort of hockey from Mika, Strome, Kreider or Panarin and with those guys setting the tone for the youngsters, the result we are gonna see is that we won't get it from Lafreniere or Kakko either.

Strome has to go and extending Mika was a bad idea as well.

I do not like the leadership at the forward position and that includes Kreider.

Makes zero sense. They brought Panarin in during the rebuild for what if they weren’t going to make the roster more formidable? And then the President and GM stand by and watch the head coach play Laf and Kakko on the third line and then voice their support for him down the stretch as they’re getting clobbered nightly.

Winnipeg is 7 points out of the last WC spot. Their next 2 games are against Dallas and Colorado. If they get 0 points in the next 2, their season is going to be in jeopardy. Even if they win one of those games, the next 10 after that is looking like they come away with a .500 record, which wont help them inch closer to the WC spots.

Its time to press the gas on getting Scheifele and/or Copp out of there.
