A point per game player the last 5 years and 31 points in 33 playoff games. I don't think you know anything about this player if you're saying he's not a difference maker, especially after he just had 3+1 against a very good Wild team last night.

I feel like I've been taking crazy pills watching people compare Strome, Monahan and Gourde to MS. The guy is every bit as impactful as Mika on a contract that's better than Kreider's.

Contract and talent wise and I don't think there would be a more perfect fit. I understand the defensive concerns - but at his contract number - there should be some wiggle room to create matchup/energy 3rd and 4th lines..

While having an multiple elite PPG offensive players.

Is anyone else surprised that Evander Kane hasn't absolutely destroyed the Oilers room yet? I was told he is this huge cancer. Everyone hates him - especially GM Ryan Reaves. You wouldn't want him on your team. He's selfish and not a guy you win with. Yet, if I'm reading things correctly the Oilers are 5-2-1 since they signed him and he has 6 points in 8 games? Playing a heavy game with 32 hits, shooting the puck a ton, and scoring. Been on the ice for 5 GF and 1 GA so far. They've even trusted him on a line with McDavid or Draisaitl and he hasn't managed to damage their careers yet. I guess we couldn't have used him because he's strictly a LW and, as we know, moving a player from LW to RW is the toughest position change in - and across - sports.

No. He's trying to stay in the NHL and earn a paycheck. Obviously he's going to be on his best behavior. It's too early to expect fireworks.

This is weird, right? He was back practicing, they weren't sure when he would return. He took a leave of absence from the team and now they put him on IR?

Wow. Shrouded in mystery.

Maybe he is dealing with something that is outside the scope of NYR team doctors (illness, substance abuse, mental health, etc) and they need to get an IR designation approved by the league a different way (full disclosure: no idea if that’s a thing).
Wish the guy all the best, whatever it is.

Rangers' Patrik Nemeth dealing with lingering effects of COVID-19

I can't speak for others, but I have similar feelings about Scheifele that I do about Miller. The cost to acquire him isn't worth the upgrade that they would see from Strome to Scheifele. That's my opinion but I'll try to show this in numbers in a bit

Right or wrong gotta think Drury is definitely looking for a bottom pairing vet dman if they are unsure about Nemeth. I have no problem with Jones/Schneider growing together for the rest of the year but will GG/Drury feel the same way?

I have little doubt they will be in that market. I could see Jones starting next season as a regular, but down the stretch and the playoffs? That's not how NHL coaches like to operate, wrong or right.

Everyone loves to think they know everything.

Same BS with Tony D when he came here…same BS when he went to Carolina…

It’s fine if you don’t like a player for whatever reason, but claiming any single player would immediately destroy a team for whatever reason is just silly nonsense.

Our bottom D pair has been ass for god knows how long. Jones-Schneider are the best look we had for 4 years now, I believe.

They shouldn't touch the D. Hajek is fine as a #7 this season. But as you say, hopefully GM and GG see it the same way.

Yea, it’s honestly tiresome. Everybody has all the answers. Chiarot is a guy Sakic covets, McCrimmon, Zito, Armstrong, etc. It’s okay if you don’t like the guy though, but calling for drury’s job if that deal happened is ridiculous without seeing the results. Laughable.

And if you can work in salary retention by a third team, and the Rangers have whatever they need to make that happen, then it should be a no brainer. Imagine him at 3 million for the next two years? Would give you a lot more room to fix the other areas of your team as well. If this guy is in any way available the Rangers should be first in line.

For this off-season:

Alt 1.

*Let Strome walk.

*Move Laf to center.

*Of course try to improve 3c, getting someone with more speed there, but its probably hard to get something done.

*Secure that this team will be competitive for the coming decade plus by resigning the kids to good contracts while we have room under the cap.

Kreider-Ziba-Kakko
Panarin-Laf-Goodrow
Blais-Chytil-Hunt
Reeves-Rooney-Gauthier
Lindgren-Fox
Miller-Trouba
Jones-Schneider

Alt 2.

Do the above, but add a cheap underperforming center to play with Panarin. Alex Nylander for example.
Lafreniere's biggest weakness is his skating and you want to move him to Center?

This is over the last 2 seasons

Scheifele makes $6.125m for the next 2 seasons and will cost, let's assume, Kravtsov + Lundkvist + NYR 1st.

Strome could probably be re-signed @ $5.5m per season on a long term deal.

Is it worth it to acquire Scheifele? Is he worth the cost to upgrade from Strome to Scheifele?

I can see that - to me, he's much more proven than a guy like Miller. MS has been the #1 center on a consistent playoff team for quite a few years now. There's no doubt he performs in the playoffs as well. Until now there hasn't been any whispers of bad play, attitude etc. I think if he didn't get off to a slow start this year - we wouldn't even be having this conversation about his availability. We're talking a legit 1A top 10-15 center.

It's a risk - but he's a guy that entering this year - I would have pegged above Mika talent wise - and someone I would have been targeting over Eichel as well (with injuries etc.) With the way they've developed now - and with the ability to have him locked in for 2.5 seasons - you're looking at someone that while the next contract will be dangerous --- it'll be when the cap is realistically expected to start to turn up - and he's not necessarily guaranteed to be a rental.

Strome is not anywhere near Scheifele's league. Strome with an extension would be far worse for this team then trading assets for a wholly better player.

Yes. Ryan Strome has never been a point per game player in his life and he plays with Panarin, especially when you could get another team to hold salary and make him even cheaper.

With Nemeth it was either covid issues or head issues/concussion lingering

Covid lingering can severely effect your lungs. He maybe practiced and was unable to hold it together in the days that followed.

Devils advocate - scheifele is also the more physical player with far more playoff experience.

his offense is most definitely better... his defense, believe it or not, is definitely worse.

There's a quantitative and pretty distinct difference between

1) Being better than Strome on balance.

2) Being better than Strome by a wide enough margin to justify the use of several high quality cost controlled assets to upgrade on him.
Plus also losing Strome.

It isn't being better than Strome in a vacuum. Is he better than Strome to the tune of 1 of our best prospects, another good prospect, and a 1st round pick?

Offensively? No, you cannot say that he is that much better.

Defensively? He has completely fallen off there.

Not to mention we already know how well Strome meshes with the team. He has grown to fit the personality and the mentality. That isn't to discredit Scheifele and say that he can't too, but the jury is out there.

Carolina has a much stronger locker room/leadership than the Rangers. This has helped with DeAngelo.
