Man - you're comparing Ryan Strome --- to a top 20 scorer in the NHL... stop it. Strome has been great for the team since he got here - I'm open to keeping Strome if he takes a deal that fits him in cap wise. But we're talking about a different level of player.

We're talking about a guy who has finished in the top-10 scoring in the league.. twice in the last 5 years. He adds a much, much different level of offense. This is adding to the Mika class - a bonafide 1C to the team - at a similar cap hit as Strome for the next two seasons.

I understand the defensive concerns - I roll that dice to get another Elite offensive performer - and I go hard on building 3rd and 4th lines that are shut down energy lines.

MS has outscored Mika every year but once - and Mika is on pace to beat him this year, which would be twice.... and you're talking about comparing him to Ryan Strome.

And you are adding more offense for no fing reason. Thankfully Drury gets it more than you do. Stop chasing the new shiny thing and how about building a team that can win.

Strome IS a poor man’s MS but you just want offense lol.

So it would be par for the Drury course
yes exactly. But not only that, it would be a cascading of events because of an unnecessary overpayment of Nemeth as well in UFA. Then you replace him with an even worse defenseman I mean you couldn't make this shit up if you tried. I just hope it's not true.

Definitely an overpay for Chiarot and Lehkonen. But I would pay to swap Chiarot for Nemeth.

Well, technically an improvement over Nemeth per Dom L, but a pylon might be, too, plus it would be cheaper. Dom's article in the Athletic today is not too kind to Chiarot.

Without Shea Weber’s help, Chiarot’s game has crumbled with a putrid 41.6 percent expected goals rate and an even uglier 31.6 percent of the actual goals. On a terrible team, both are somehow below the team average. For teams hoping for his ‘defensive’ prowess, no Canadiens defender gives up more chances against than Chiarot’s 3.08 expected goals against per 60.
On top of that Chiarot is a major risk at putting his team on the penalty kill due to his lack of foot speed and this season has a penalty differential of minus-14. On a per-60 basis, only three defenders have a worse rate over the last three seasons than Chiarot.
He’s not the answer, and in all likelihood will likely be a landmine other teams should try to avoid at all costs at the deadline — not spent assets for. Chiarot is currently projected to be an incredible detriment to any team that acquires him, worth minus-0.9 wins. That’s the fifth-lowest mark in the league and is driven by already being worth minus-1.2 wins this season in just 44 games. Only Keith Yandle has been worse.
There have been comparisons made to Tampa Bay’s acquisition of David Savard last season as the blueprint for a Chiarot deal. Aside from that also being a wild overpayment, Savard at least had a stronger resume to fall back on despite also having a rough season prior. That kept his projected value afloat. Chiarot’s resume looks buoyed by one solid year in 2019-20 where he was stapled to a star defender. That’s not worth paying premium assets for.

An extremely poor MS - as in his career high in points is lower than MS' worst seasons over the last 5 years.

At a 6.1 cap hit there's still room to add defensive players my man. Maybe reading isn't your strong suit, but that's one of the big advantages of Scheif - and you if you get a little retained - there's even more room. This isn't Eichel and another 9.5-10 million dollar cap hit - this is a legit PPG player in his prime (with near PPG playoff numbers) with an ideal cap hit.

The elite offensive players are the hardest to acquire. Finding role players for a cup contender - won't be easier - but it'll be MUCH more doable than a PPG players making barely 6 million per year.

Yes he's on a down year - he wouldn't be available otherwise. Sometimes the time to buy is low. He does not lock the cap entirely up - that's why he stands out.

If your goal is to add to Strome with depth I can get behind that - but Strome's cap it is going to be extremely close to MS... with nowhere near the production - again, coming from someone who is a fan of Strome and open to an extension. Even on a sweetheart deal - that's 5-5.5 mill

This is weird, right? He was back practicing, they weren't sure when he would return. He took a leave of absence from the team and now they put him on IR?

Could they go the Vegas/TB route?

Put him on LTIR, bring in 2.5 more of cap room via bad trade before bringing him back for the Cup run on the 1st pairing with Fox

Key move

For the record, I have no interest in Chiarot, I would only do that to get rid of Nemeth's salary the next 2 years. All good info though.

The Rangers could easily retain salary here to facilitate a deal. I would imagine Drury has a line on a replacement backup goaltender.

This could facilitate a larger deal.

Arthur Staple reported the Rangers haven't received any real offers for Georgiev. Staple wrote that in reference to what Frank wrote. Arthur wrote the Rangers would need to acquire another goaltender to replace Georgiev. That is not as easy as sounds to pull off.

Would be an awful lot of hassle for a 3rd round draft pick.

DGB via Athetic on LaF & Kakko (apologies if already posted).

Is it too soon to say Kaapo Kakko and Alexis Lafrenière are busts? Because I’m starting to worry. What does history say about players their age with their expectations/hype? — Skinny Peet
Oh good, I’m sure all the Rangers fans who complain I don’t talk about their team enough will be thrilled now.
The short answer: Yes, it’s too soon. Lafrenière is only in Year 2, and Kakko is Year 3, and we’ve seen players struggle to produce very early who went onto long and successful careers. Joe Thornton debuted with a seven-point season and didn’t get an All-Star vote until year five. The Sedins didn’t look like stars until they were 25. Leon Draisaitl had nine points and spent half the year in the minors as a rookie. Those guys all turned out fine.
The slightly longer answer: It’s too soon to say either guy is a bust, but it’s not too soon to be at least a little worried. Ideally you’d want to see some signs of significant progress, and that really hasn’t been there. That’s especially true of Kakko, since he doesn’t have quite the same pedigree and is a year deeper into his career. Lots of guys have bad rookie seasons, but there aren’t many who were still scuffling along as 30-ish point guys in Year 3 except for the Sedins, and that was during the peak of the dead puck era.
Corey was still on board with both guys heading into the season, and it’s too early to bail. But it’s not crazy to be concerned, and the longstanding idea that either guy is some sort of completely untouchable, can’t-miss core piece probably has to be re-evaluated at some point.”

Last week, Staple brought up Thomas Greiss as a possibility for the Rangers if they wanted to move on from Georgiev. Greiss is a low maintenance guy. Reading in between the lines. Georgiev must be a pain in the butt. Maybe Tony was not wrong when he slugged him last season. Arthur knows Greiss from their Islander days. Greiss is probably a really good guy. Staple was just speculating. Greiss has a higher cap hit than Georgiev. The Rangers have the space but it's not really worth the trouble of making two trades to change the back up goaltending. Georgiev won't be here next season. Just finish out the season. Shut up and stop the puck when Gallant calls your number. If the Rangers can't find any takers for him in July, they will not qualify him. Georgiev can make his own deal in the summer.

I love how people complain about Strome’s defense(as they should), but are willing to deal for MS. Maybe get a 2C that isn’t attrocious defensively? Maybe that will help with playoff style hockey? Just sayin…
Yea, his 31 points in 33 games sure show he won't help when the playoffs happen.

Maybe, maybe not. The Vegas news is fresh and they are still not sure about Lehner's injury. He already has one shoulder surgery in his recent past. I just don't know where else Vegas is going for a decent goaltender without paying a stiff price. I would be willing to gamble that Greiss or Allen could be obtained at a favorable price, probably for prospects rather than picks. Greiss is particular is a great locker room guy (as well as a pretty good goaltender) Greiss for Stevey Y's guy Hajek

Not every line has to have Bob Gainey on it. We have a good defense and Igor, plus you got Zib, Goodrow, Kreider, Rooney on all the other lines that are either good to very good defensive forwards. It really wouldn't be much different from how it is right now with Strome.

No thanks to Scheifele.

Shiny toy of a player and not a true difference maker when it counts. Would rather have another Goodrow
A point per game player the last 5 years and 31 points in 33 playoff games. I don't think you know anything about this player if you're saying he's not a difference maker, especially after he just had 3+1 against a very good Wild team last night.
